Where you should play 36 holes of golf in the UK

Whether it be the historic heartlands of Scotland, the revered golf clubs of England, the modern resorts of Wales, and the classic venues across Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom is truly blessed to have such a spectacular collection of golfing jewels for you to explore.

There are so many special places to discover, but a select few naturally have more to offer given that they present several courses for you to choose from.

If you're planning the ultimate golf day out, or perhaps you are undertaking a charity marathon challenge, such as Prostate Cancer UK's Big Golf Race, which is the biggest and most successful fundraising event of its kind, then those destinations that have a minimum of 36 holes on their property are certainly worth exploring.

Should you be seeking advice on how to best navigate a multiple-round experience, then you need to read this, but if you are searching for the ideal location for such an endeavour, then we have just what you need.

Using the Golfshake Course Section and its engaging Interactive Map, we have identified a vast range of two-course, 36-hole hotspots throughout the UK that deliver everything you could possibly want and more.

We have deliberately avoided those places with more than two 18-hole courses, the likes of St Andrews Links, The Belfry and Celtic Manor, but for a compact 36 holes of golf, here are some magical spots that you ought to try and visit one day.

If you want to play two rounds at the same venue, then these are the places to start with.

Archerfield Links

Location: Dirleton, East Lothian

Golfshake Rating: 4.72

Review Comment: "Excellent. An amazing day, the whole experience from golf, facilities and people."

Blairgowrie Golf Club

Blairgowrie GC

Location: Blairgowrie, Perth & Kinross

Golfshake Rating: 4.90

Review Comment: "Bags of character to the course, a very fair test of golf, beautiful surroundings and a fabulous clubhouse."

Bramshaw Golf Club

Location: Lyndhurst, Hampshire

Golfshake Rating: 3.98

Review Comment: "It's gorgeous, horses, cows, deer and the natural New Forest and its streams all around. Sometimes the greens can be a bit torn from animals, and the fairways a bit thin, but it is my favourite and stunning course."

Brocket Hall Golf Club

Location: Welwyn, Hertfordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.45

Review Comment: "A real treat! Two courses at Brocket, we played the Palmerston, which although not the signature course, is a fantastic course to play. Undulating fairways, pristine greens and a lot of mature trees, this course is a good mix between tight, tricky holes and open wide fairways. Greens are in great condition, but are far from flat so expect some tricky putts!"

Burhill Golf Club

Location: Walton-on-Thames, Surrey

Golfshake Rating: 4.19

Review Comment: "The standout feature is the maturity of the setting. Many holes are framed by tall woodland, giving each shot a sense of definition and purpose. It's the kind of course where you remember individual holes because they each have their own personality."

Carden Park Golf Resort

Location: Chester, Cheshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.09

Review Comment: "This is a beautiful scenic course with a good level of difficulty and challenging. One to hire a buggy as it is a long course with some distance between green and next tee. The pro shop is good for a cheeky bargain as well."

Cawder Golf Club

Location: Bishopbriggs, Glasgow

Golfshake Rating: 3.87

Review Comment: "Excellent golf course. Played here a number of times and always been enjoyable. Greens are immaculate and fairways are immaculate."

Chichester Golf Club

Location: Chichester, West Sussex

Golfshake Rating: 3.80

Review Comment: "Try and play Chichester once a year. It is always a pleasure with the pro shop staff, a cheerful bunch! Had a very acceptable breakfast baguette before going out, which I thought was well priced. I sometimes feel the Tower course does not maybe get the attention that the Cathedral seems to receive. However, the greens were in good condition and fast."

Clandeboye Golf Club

Location: Bangor, County Down

Golfshake Rating: 4.40

Review Comment: "Good course, difficult with good greens, welcoming bar staff, excellent pro shop."

Close House

Close House

Location: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland

Golfshake Rating: 4.49

Review Comment: "The Filly is a great course, tough in places with some long holes, but fair, with some short par fours as well. Well worth the money."

Cottrell Resort

Location: St Nicholas, Cardiff

Golfshake Rating: 4.21

Review Comment: "All 36 holes are interesting and forgiving offering a challenge for golfers at most amateur levels. Visitors are made to feel welcome by the staff in both the clubhouse reception area and bar."

Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club

Location: Kirknewton, Edinburgh

Golfshake Rating: 4.06

Review Comment: "Course in excellent condition. Staff in shop and the starters hut very friendly. Quite an open course, so can hit driver freely apart from the last five holes or so."

Dullatur Golf Club

Location: Cumbernauld, Glasgow

Golfshake Rating: 3.98

Review Comment: "Really nice course, particularly in summer. Lovely views towards the Campsie Hills. Quite hilly for the less fit but worth the effort. Nice clubhouse with good facilities, friendly members and staff."

East Sussex National Golf Club

Location: Uckfield, East Sussex

Golfshake Rating: 4.02

Review Comment: "The two courses are an excellent choice for a society, not too long off the white tees, and the rough was cut back providing plenty of room off the tees. Greens very good."

Enville Golf Club

Location: Stourbridge, Staffordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.81

Review Comment: "A very challenging course which is really well laid out with natural features, a tough challenge. Welcoming staff with very good facilities."

Fairmont St Andrews

Location: St Andrews, Fife

Golfshake Rating: 4.32

Review Comment: "The well kept fairways and greens make for a pleasant playing experience and the friendly staff are always on hand to offer help and advice. I highly recommend Kittocks as a fantastic golf course to visit - the scenery and the challenging course play make for an enjoyable round."

Forest of Arden Golf Resort

Location: Coventry, Warwickshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.17

Hawkstone Park Golf Club

Location: Shrewsbury, Shropshire

Review Comment: "Very nice course, could well be worth an overnight stay for both courses if the other course is as good as the Championship layout."

Hilton Park Golf Club

Location: Milngavie, Glasgow

Golfshake Rating: 4.23

Review Comment: "While not long, the Allander course at Hilton Park is an exciting and exhilarating golf course. A mix of some tough par 3 holes, a couple of excellent par 5s and the full range of par 4 holes, this course is brilliant fun to play. Not tough if you can hit it straight but then that is the challenge."

John O'Gaunt Golf Club

Location: Sandy, Bedfordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.07

Review Comment: "Course is very pleasing on the eye with every hole providing a different challenge to the last. Greens were in great condition although the fairways were dry but not hard. Food and drink was very well prepared and tasty. I didn't use all of the clubhouse facilities but everything was clean and tidy."

Golfshake Rating: 3.99

Review Comment: "Very good course for the average golfer and reasonably priced, great option of having two courses to choose from."

Moor Park Golf Club

Location: Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.51

Review Comment: "This is one of those courses you're always happy to be able to play. Steeped in heritage and sculpted into the natural beauty of the surroundings it never fails to make you say wow. Add to that the course is spectacular, in amazing condition at all times and a treat to play."

Moray Golf Club

Location: Lossiemouth, Moray

Golfshake Rating: 4.89

Review Comment: "Thoroughly enjoyed a challenging but fair golf course. Have played the Old Course on a couple of occasions but this was my first time on the New Course. What a great second course to have."

Newmachar Golf Club

Location: Newmachar, Aberdeenshire

Golfshake Rating: 3.70

Review Comment: "This is a gem of a course with some tight holes and lots of interesting parts, shots over water and is one of those courses you need to plan your way around. Wayward drives are penalised by trees, and bunkers are protected by some excellent sand trap positioning. Greens were pretty fast for April and ran true."

Richmond Park Golf Course

Location: Richmond Park, London

Golfshake Rating: 3.28

Review Comment: "Unbeatable value for money when it comes to a public course in London. Fairways and greens in top condition, rough is tricky, bring plenty of balls as they are easy to lose even if you're just off the fairway."

Royal Aberdeen Golf Club

Royal Ashdown Forest

Location: Forest Row, East Sussex

Golfshake Rating: 4.72

Review Comment: "Haven't played the West Course at Royal Ashdown for 13 years but was so pleased to find it exactly how I remembered. Really slick greens with plenty of subtle run offs. Loads of gorse to punish stray shots as well as the rough being up due to the wet weather and sunshine we've been experiencing."

Royal County Down Golf Club

Location: Newcastle, County Down

Golfshake Rating: 4.82

Royal Mid Surrey Golf Club

Location: Richmond, Surrey

Golfshake Rating: 4.19

Royal Portrush Golf Club

Location: Portrush, County Antrim

Golfshake Rating: 4.92

Royal Troon Golf Club

Location: Troon, Ayrshire

Saunton Golf Club

Location: Braunton, Devon

Golfshake Rating: 4.92

Review Comment: "Played both the West and East courses over two days, both are incredibly good and appropriately challenging, kept in exemplary condition with fast greens that can be difficult to hold. Breakfast very tasty, passes the sausage test. All in all, a top notch experience. View from the clubhouse down the 18th on the East one of the best in golf."

Slaley Hall Golf Club

Review Comment: "Beautiful setting, excellent condition and a very good test of golf."

St Mellion

Location: Saltash, Cornwall

Golfshake Rating: 4.47

St Pierre Hotel & Country Club

Location: Chepstow, Monmouthshire

Golfshake Rating: 3.82

Review Comment: "Hadn't been here for some years, but resort was still good and both courses played well over the two days I was there. Old was played first and was in good condition. Very hard to hold a green though due to lack of recent rain. It's an interesting track and very playable from the yellows. Mathern was the following day and in some ways I enjoyed it more as a little shorter so gave you more options. Greens were a little more receptive which was also welcome. Both greens on both courses rolled well."

Sundridge Park Golf Club

Sundridge Park

Review Comment: "Immaculate condition. Every hole different and challenging."

Turnberry Resort

Location: Turnberry, Ayrshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.97

Review Comment: "Loved it! The course is fantastic, just avoid the bunkers at all costs, amazing views helped by wonderful sunny weather with virtually no wind. A dream come true to play here, but highly recommend the cheaper shoulder season."

Walton Heath Golf Club

Location: Tadworth, Surrey

Golfshake Rating: 4.80

Review Comment: "Walton Heath is world renowned and even after all the rain we have had recently it was in spectacular condition. It is a proper championship course, very tough, especially if you are not finding fairways. But if you do, you can score, depending on where they put the pins - there are some severely sloping parts of the greens. I played the Old Course, which I had previously found very difficult, but it is a course that you get to know the more you play it. Well worth playing if you get the chance."

Golfshake Rating: 4.91

Review Comment: "What can I say, everything about the club is exceptional, shame the same couldn't be said about my golf!"

Woodlands Golf & Country Club
