How to play 36, 72, or 100 holes of golf in one day

Which golfer doesn't embrace a challenge? Every round you play is an examination, each shot you face is an equation to be solved, it's one of the many characteristics that make this game enduringly special.

But if you wished to take that test to another level - how about pushing yourself to your physical and mental limits?

The summer months are fabulous. It's one thing to benefit from the (hopefully) better weather, but the expanded hours of daylight mean that you could remain out on the course from the early hours of the morning to the majestic dusk of the late evening.

If you live in the north of Scotland, only a handful of hours will come anywhere close to being dark throughout the peak weeks of the season, which means that you could pack several rounds into one day.

36 holes is something that many of you will have undertaken in a single outing, perhaps even in competition, but this is the time of the year when golfers will take on even greater marathons on the fairways, often in support of charity.

The Big Golf Race - which raises invaluable funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer UK - is the biggest of these events, setting out challenges that cover 36 holes, yes, but even 72 and, incredibly, 100 holes in a single day to back this most worthy of causes.

If you were to take on a challenge like this, just how could you make it a successful experience?

There's no getting away from the fact that it won't be easy, nothing truly rewarding ever is, but here are some tips that should make the process as smooth as possible.

Know Your Limits

Marathon Golf Challenge

So many of the stories behind those people taking on The Big Golf Race are both emotive and inspiring, but we wouldn't want to see anyone pushing themselves too far.

Whether it be due to age, physical limitations or health issues that may demand a more measured approach, consider just how realistic it would be for you to take on the biggest of distances.

There's nothing wrong with sticking to just 36 holes, as 72 or 100 is clearly beyond what most of us would comfortably manage.

Knowing your limits - and taking on the most appropriate distance - is an essential step to take.

Do You Really Need to Carry Everything?

Likewise, you need to consider just how you're going to navigate two, four or five and a half rounds of golf in one sitting. Walking is undeniably the coolest way of completing such a task, imagine the sense of achievement, but given that you could easily be covering over 30 miles (while playing golf), there would be no shame in using a cart for some - or even all - of that adventure.

But if you are choosing to walk - and good for you - a golf trolley could be vital. Ask yourself, can you really carry a bag for that amount of time?

Should the answer be yes, kudos, but also think about what you're packing within that bag, a full set of clubs won't be needed, and be mindful of the weight you are going to be carrying, keeping things to a minimum and just the absolute essentials will be beneficial.

Play From Forward Tees

Your stamina and golfing acumen are going to be stretched beyond any reasonable sense, and you may also be battling against the clock and diminishing sunlight to compete your challenge.

So, why not be a little easier on yourself and play off forward tees? This is an effective way to get around the course quicker, to reduce strain on the body, and to make playing the game itself in such an unusually hurried manner just a little bit more enjoyable.

Keep Moving - Play Quickly

If you're trying to squeeze in 72 (or even 100!) holes in one day, time management will be important, so consider playing ready golf and keep moving when you can.

Don't spend too long searching for balls or waiting over shots, those putts don't have to be perfectly lined up and you shouldn't require a million practice swings, just keep going and don't stand on ceremony as the main thing is that you are building that forward momentum hole by hole, round to round.

Regular Hydration

It's obvious, but when you're playing dozens of golf holes and walking tens of miles, most likely in warmer, summer conditions, you need to keep hydrating, water is your friend, and consuming a steady supply of it will help you to feel mentally sharp and physically able to get through the latter stages of your marathon challenge, whichever distance that may be.

Sustenance

Similarly, you will be expending a lot of calories and burning up a significant amount of energy, so to keep your engine running as seamlessly as possible, you need to give your body sufficient fuel.

It could be bananas, energy bars, or even a quick bite to eat between a round, anything nutritional can make all the difference to keeping you healthy on the course and fully able to enjoy the experience.

Wear a Hat & Apply Sunscreen

Golfers should always be mindful of protecting their skin from the sun when playing, but that is even more paramount when you're spending an entire day on the course, in summer, in full view of the rays beaming down on you.

Apply sunscreen liberally and regularly, potentially up to every nine holes, but certainly between rounds, while a hat is an accessory that you simply need to have if you're taking on the marathon challenge on a sunny day.

Even if you're not someone who typically wears a hat, for this occasion, it's a must.

Have a Change of Clothes

Think of how sweaty you can feel after playing one round of golf in summer, so imagine multiplying that sensation several times over!

Having a change of socks, underwear, shirts, and even your shorts or trousers will keep you staying fresh and will make an enormous difference to how your body is feeling as the day progresses.

Just like a Formula 1 car would have a pit stop, give yourself a moment or two for a complete wardrobe change.

Taking on a marathon golf challenge is an unforgettable experience, particularly when it's done to raise money for causes like Prostate Cancer UK's Big Golf Race, but it's important to do what you can to ensure that your time on the course is enjoyable, safe and healthy, and we reckon that by following these tips, your day will be a resounding success.
