What the club says: A combination of stunning coastal views, centuries of history and hugely enjoyable golf is what makes Balcomie Links one of Scotland’s most finely polished, golfing gems.

This traditional, classic links course was laid out by the old master himself, Tom Morris, and opened in 1895. Balcomie has the unusual combination of three par fives, six par threes and nine par fours, producing a tough par of 69.

A wee cracker

Having played the Craighead course a few years ago we finally had the chance of the Balcomie on our visit this year. Did not disappoint. Some magic holes and some tough ones (4th and 5th if I remember rightly over the bay, we had a calm day but when windy those are beasts. 13 and 14 are two lovely par 3's on the way back in.

Marmite

Had a mixed view in our group after playing for the first time - lots of par 3s make it feel a bit 'pitch and putt' however the wind blew creating a stern challenge overall, especially when having to take on the water in the front 9. Friendly welcome in the pro shop and club house...?.you'll have to make your own minds up....

Lovely

Great course, we played the Craighead but don't think it matters as they are both fantastic. Great condition and really enjoyed the whole day.

Would love to return to play the other course which may be a bit better going by the member comments.

Quirky, testing, fun

Surrounded by the likes of St Andrews and Kingsbarnes, Crail is a little bit different. It's a older, narrower course and gives perhaps a more genuine insight into a true Scottish member's club compared to it's near neighbours. When we played it the haar (fog) moved in reducing visibility to less than 100 yards but that's far from normal. It was still a lovely walk.

What should have been the highlight of the weekend was ruined because the greens where terrible. I know work has to be done to keep the greens in good condition, but putting in a bunker is not good.

Played the Balcomie course in Open week so as you would expect the course to be full and it didn't disappoint. I am generally not the best golfer away from home but thoroughly enjoyed the experience and received value for good shots. Only downside was not knowing the direction of holes in some places, finding myself on the wrong fairway. Teed off at 4pm and was disappointed not to be able to get food on return after 8pm but small issue

If I wanted a golf headquarters in Scotland, this would be it. Both courses are super: Balcomie, a very old, sometimes quirky, links where you are always either on the shore of just a fairway away; Craigshead, a wonderful modern design in a traditional links style. Balcomie may have slightly better views, Craighead is even more challenging with wonderfully contoured greens and strategic pot bunkers. The clubhouse has view over Balcomie and the North Sea over 270 degrees, good food, and friendly people. What more could you want in Scotland?
