What the club says: The fabulous setting at St Pierre has been one of the key factors behind the rise in status of Welsh golf.
The famous Old Course is recognised as one of the finest in the UK and has played host to the Solheim Cup and EuroPro Tour events as well as other tournaments. Your round reaches a wonderful finale with the 17th green almost on an island and the famous 18th hole with its elevated green, which has seen the climax to many an exciting professional tournament. The Mathern Course is a wonderful complement to the tougher Old Course. Opened in 1975 and designed by Bill Cox, this course gives you an opportunity to enjoy the peaceful Monmouthshire surroundings at a great golfing venue.

Early Morning Round
Beautiful morning round. Course is great nic considering how dry it has been. A number of the greens had been watered. Grass length on the green a little long and as a result a but bobbly. Would definitely play again. Love this course with large mature trees. A true test of golf.Reviewer Rating

Old Course - A challenge
Mathern course was too wet for buggies so played the Old Course twice. Old Course was a fantastic course with strategically placed bunkers and some water. It's a massively long course and on a Sunday afternoon it was really busy. Our round took just under 5 hours. Several times we waited 10-15 minutes on the tee box which did spoil the experience but having said that the course was in great condition and it was a real challenge. Par was 75 off the ladies tees. I can see why this course has hosted European tour events in the past. Golf shop staff and course marshals did a good job and were very welcoming. Shout out to the lovely lady in the half way hut who stayed open so we got a cup of tea at the end of the 9th.Reviewer Rating

Terrible condition
Old course is better than the other, but both in terrible condition, very wet, greens and fairways are battered. Fairways are as long as rough on any normal course. Not sure how they have got into this condition as seems so significant much more than just heavy play. Clearly money being saved in upkeep. Less regular cutting. We had fond memories of this course from 7 years ago and it just isn’t the same. Bar is ridiculously expensive. Halfway house was £7 for a 330ml peroni. Cheap deals but they make the money back.Reviewer Rating

Mathern course was the worst I?ve ever played.
24 of us for a one night stay and two rounds of golf, one on each course. Played the Mathern course on Sunday. No buggies due course condition. Not surprised, it was a disgrace and by far the worse course I have ever played. Our local municipal is in a better condition. Awful signage, poor tee markers, the greens were no better than my rear garden lawn. The old course was a significant improvement fortunately but didn't make up for the disappointment of the first day.
We stayed overnight, I was stopping in the ?affordable housing? village. Dirty, full of daddy long legs and spiders. One can of water for two people, one pack of biscuits, no shampoo or shower gel, only conditioner and body lotion. Very disappointing.
The bar was just shy of ?20 for three pints, couldn't even drown our sorrows there without flinching at the bar bill.

Old Course
Having played this course over the years a few times. I was disappointed with its condition not so much the greens they were fair to good, but the fairways looked tired and not cut to shape like in the past.Taking account the wet weather followed now dry weather it may be down to catch up. So let’s hope so as the venue has a lot to offer

Superb Course
I played the Old Course & thought it was superb. The starter was great & talked me through a few quirks of the course.
Great views from the top of the course around the 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th. The 6th is a great little par 3 over a valley.
Then the 2nd nine played around the lake is equally as enjoyable. Especially the 15th & 17th where the greens extend out into the water.
It's quite tight in places with plenty of trees, especially for someone who fades the ball.
The greens were OK, but they had recently been hollow tined. Bunkers lacked a bit of sand.
Pace of play was good as 2x4 balls let me play through.
They are only missing some practice nets, as I didn't have time to use the range before I teed off.
Great value for money at £30, especially as Celtic Manor down the road wanted £117 to play the Twenty Ten!

Tough Rough
I have played this course a few times now and it is always presented well. It is a tough layout and the light rough seems to just swallow up the golf ball. Parts of the course can get quote wet so time your visit with the best weatherReviewer Rating

Just gorgeous, some of the holes were a joy to play. The 18th is a monster par 3, but such a pleasure to play(Round played: Oct 2021 - Score: 98 Handicap: 24.1)

Terrible greens in September 2021
£25 for the open day, greens very average and course fairly bland, having watched the european tour play in the 90s this was a major let down.course was redesigned in 2008, some nice holes but a course is rated in it's putting surface and these are just terrible.

Good course But!
Played the old course on the 1st day, fantastic condition, especially the greens, they were like putting on snooker tables. But i thought the course was just a little bit bland with no hole really standing out or memorable apart from the 18th, We played the Mathern course the next day, and all our group thought it was the better course, it to was in fantastic condition, but in our opinion had more interesting holes on it.Hotel, food, and bar were ok, if not a little exspensive, but you expect that if you stay at these places. All in all 2 good courses...but!!Reviewer Rating
