What the club says: Close House Golf Course was originally built as a nine hole course in 1964 by Newcastle University for the use of staff and students and was extended to 18 holes in the early eighties.
The Lee Westwood Filly course layout was re-designed and re-opened in June 2013. It now has 18 USGA specification greens, is over 6000 yards in length and a par 70 from the medal tees. The undulating greens provide a real test for your putting skills, but accuracy off the tee is paramount for good scoring, Having already held its first PGA Professional event the course has proved challenging to golfers of all abilities.
The par 71 Championship Lee Westwood Colt course measures 6813 yards and spans 160 acres of the Tyne Valley. Renowned golf course designer Scott McPherson carefully planned the course around existing woodland to fit with an intended old fashioned design. After 4 years of being open the course has been voted into the Golf World Top 100 Courses of Britain & Ireland.

Most Helpful Review
My wife paid for my round as my birthday present, and i can honestly say it was money well spent. On arrival the staff were friendly and vey helpfull, staff in clubhouse keen to pass on advice on what to be aware of on certain holes. The course was immaculate, greens run very true and well paced, for what are relative new greens. the rough is indeed 'rough' and you will quickly learn to 'take your medicine' if you stray. Each hole is a different challange, and you really need to give consideration to where you lay up , drive to, or chip from, it is not always wise to reach for the big stick on the big holes, be warned. this is a real gofers track, and will give you a sharp reminder how tricky golf is, if you dont get it right. i play off 4, and carded a plus 8, having played really well, simply reflects that i am maybe not a good as i thought. i have played royal county down, royal portrush, st andrews, troon, etc etc, and this is right up there. ps; i have to mention the green staff, i observed them on several holes and the attention to detail they put in was admirable, and again, they are very friendly and more than happy to tell you where you needed to be landing the ball, it was a pleasure to see young lads taking such obvious pride in there work, and the course. i would most definately return, and hope the wife has got the hint, that with christmas aproaching, there would be no better a gift. - Sep 19 2012
Golfshake Team Review
With two courses to choose from in the Filly Course and the Colt Course, you really cannot go wrong at Close House. Both the courses offer an exceptional challenge of golf, with the Colt Course arguably edging the Filly Course. Of the course the facilities are second to none, and the clubhouse is the perfect place to relax after your round. - Jul 26 2016

If you can stay out of the ever growing rough this course is a great challenge for every level of handicap golfer especially when the wind starts to blow.

Excellent day out, despite heavy rain for the first 6 holes. As the course is cut that fine puddles appeared but soon dried out once the rain relented. A fair challenge for players of all levels with some fiendishly placed bunkers always in play off the tee and approaching the green. Clubhouse is awesome with lovely food/drink and helpful staff. Would definitely go back.
Love this course, the standard is great and maintained to high standard. I would certainly recommend a trip to this facility.
