What the club says: Compared with most other golf clubs of similar standing, we would be considered fairly young as we were only established in 1948. We have, however, an outstanding record of progress and development the match of any other private members golf club in England and have hosted many National and Regional Tournaments.
With two excellent courses we aim to offer both members, and visitors alike, a wonderful welcome and golfing experience that we hope will encourage them to return at their earliest opportunity.

Great Parkland layout
Course is very pleasing on the eye with every hole providing a different challenge to the last. This was my first visit so found myself out of position on a few holes which meant hitting the GIR was either a challenge or not possible.Greens were in great condition although the fairways were dry but not hard.
Food and drink was very well prepared and tasty. I didn't use all of the clubhouse facilities but everything was clean and tidy.

Great set-up and 2 courses
The old course is renowned as one of the best courses in Bedfordshire, and probably the first place Nick Faldo won an open competition (as a junior in 1973). The Carthagena course was built in the mid 70s, and has come along nicely, and has better drainage. Both are a good challenge in their own right. We played the Old Course, which is well laid out and a delight to play.
Bunkers: I only visited one greenside bunker during this visit and they played and looked immaculate, all being freshly raked by the greenkeepers and the players in front of us. This is hardly surprising, as this round was to celebrate Bedfordshire County?s Centenary, and John O?Gaunt's 75th Anniversary. As such, we played a shotgun start, and the teams represented every club in our county, and also the County Scratch mixed team, and England Golf (including the CEO), who ran out the eventual winners.
Fairways were perfect, and had some serious undulations to deal with, making for some tricky shots.
Just as in my last round here - in their Seniors Pairs Open, we also played from the back tees, where the WHS course rating is 133. The longer par 4s are hard to reach in 2 for us older guys, and that certainly showed, and explains why we were well down the pecking order (but not quite last) as we had 3 out of 4 of us being seniors.
Greens were quite quick, and very true, with the ball going exactly where you sent it, but without any recent rain, they were a little unreceptive, unless you hit the ball very hard.
The course has many very mature trees, and there was a concerted effort during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 to pollard a number of the older ones, and also remove the few dead ones that were still in place at the end of Summer 2020.
Food was included with this competition, so I can't comment on food or prices, but I have eaten here before, and remember it as always being of a very good standard. The bar is well organised, and they coped well with all 100 players turning up at a similar time after the shotgun start, and then finishing at the same time.
All in all an enjoyable day, and I would certainly recommend, and I will be back as soon as possible, as I always enjoy playing here.

Testing course
The John O'Gaunt course is a testing par 71 for all handicap Golfers. The course was in a good condition & greens were true.
Fairways & tees were well kept & saw at least 3/4 greenskeepers keeping the course tip top.
Facilities are fine & staff friendly.
I paid ?40 as a guest of a member which was a fair price, but personally wouldn't pay more than ?50 to play there.
I would recommend playing at John O'Gaunt.

Without doubt the best course I've played this year when it comes to condition.Running fairways and really quick greens. Nothing to complain about at all.
Clubhouse staff friendly and attentive too.
Some lovely looking holes, tree lined but always able to find your ball.

The Carthagena course was built in the mid 70?s, and has come along nicely, and has better drainage. Great set-up and 2 courses
Renowned as one of the best courses in Bedfordshire, and probably the first place Nick Faldo won an open competition (as a junior). We played the Old Course, which is well laid out and a delight to play, although because the fairways haven't recovered from the very dry summer of 2018, preferred lies are in place on all areas mown to fairway length.
Preferred lies is also in place in bunkers, because of Covid19, and the resultant removal of rakes. I only visited one, and whilst it looked immaculate, being freshly raked by the greenkeepers, the sand below the top level was quite firm, resulting in a flyer over the green!
This round was in the Bedfordshire County Senior Championships, and therefore played from the back tees, where CSS was 73 on the day against a par of 71, and this was on a very calm day ? very little wind to worry about, and a lovely sunny day. The longer par 4?s are hard to reach in 2 for us older guys, and that certainly showed.
Greens were quite quick, and very true, with the ball going exactly where you sent it, although they seemed a little firm, so difficult to get a full shot into the greens to stop quickly, unless you hit it very firmly.
The course has many very mature trees, although I did notice that they have plans to remove, or at least pollard a number of the older ones, and presumably they will also remove the few dead ones that are still in place.
When this Championship was re-organised, the restaurant hadn't re-opened, so I can't comment on food or prices, but I have eaten here before, and remember it as always being very good. The bar is well organised to avoid people congregating (Covid19 again), although that does give a rather strange one way system to enter and leave to clubhouse.
All in all and enjoyable day, and I would certainly recommend, and I will be back as soon as possible, as I always enjoy playing here.
