The Best UK Golf Courses Never to Host a Major

By: Golfshake Editor | Fri 21 Aug 2020

Hosting a tournament of significance is a proud achievement for any golf course, a validation of its quality and stature, an honour that has been bestowed on numerous venues throughout the United Kingdom.

The Open Championship Rota, from St Andrews and Royal Birkdale to Prestwick and Royal Cinque Ports, enjoys a special place in history, but as many a keen travelling golfer knows, there are often fantastic layouts nearby that drift somewhat under the glare of major attention.

We have sought to identify some of the best venues never to have welcomed a major championship to their fairways, but we have narrowed the criteria down significantly, ruling out those courses that have played host to The Open Championship, The Women's Open, The Senior Open Championship, The Ryder Cup, The Solheim Cup, The Amateur Championship, The Women's Amateur Championship, The Walker Cup, and The Curtis Cup.

Adding the marquee team events eliminates some classics from consideration, including the likes of Ganton, Southport & Ainsdale and Nairn, while revered courses such as North Berwick, Hillside and Royal Dornoch have either hosted or joint-hosted one of the storied amateur tournaments, which also rules them out of the running.

So, what are you left with? Underlining the depth of British golf, there is still much to choose from.

Looking at ratings submitted by the Golfshake Community, and featured within the UK Top 100 on WhereIPlayGolf, these venues have all recorded at least 20 independent reviews, are Highly Recommended, and crucially have not hosted any of the above professional or amateur major championships.
