What the club says: A true test of golf, Royal Birkdale was founded in 1889 and on eight occasions has played host to the most famous championship of them all, The Open. Measuring 6817 yards from the white championship tees, the links demands far more than simply distance, although this is a particular challenge when the wind comes in off the sea and seems to gather strength as it funnels through the valleys of giant sandhills. A round here is to be cherished and will never be forgotten.

Perfection
Golfing perfection.
Place is immaculate and if you ever get the chance to go and play it then you absolutely must.
There is a bit of room for those that aren't as striaght, but there is about 122 bunkers so if that isnt a strength then you could be in for a long day.
They could drop the pins in the middle of every green and it would still be hard to get your ball close - and pick the line.
This is a difficult championship golf course so just enjoy it for the experience that it is.

Stunning.
To walk these fairways and play these greens that the greatest golfers the world has ever seen is a privilege nobody should take for granted.
What an experience.

Just amazing
We squeezed in a £185 round before the end of March and it was a pretty poor weather day with wind, sleet, hale and some rain and got very cold but we still loved it. I can dream about a sunny round one day when I gave saved my pennies.
Take extra time to use the practice facilities which a 5 min walk close to the 15th tee. Just great ! and the short game areas I'd die for at my home club to practice chips and bunker play.
Was incredible to play the course where the pros play, taking in those nostalgic shots, imagining where Spieth played his recovery to on 13 before he romped home to victory in 2017. The round is full of memories like that.
The greens had had some work done but were still so good but the fairways were so firm. Amazing condition.
Although a bleak weather day the biggest 'wows' were standing on the par 3 tees like 7, 12 and 14. They are just stunning.
Such great fun to play working out where to hit your tee shot to escape the nests of bunkers waiting for an idle shot.
The 2 girls I have met in the pro shop each time I were both delightful, so cheerful and welcoming. Honestly. They made the experience. A smile costs nothing, other clubs should take note........we all spent a fortune on memorabilia too :-)
Overall a good test of golf. (we played off yellow at 6393 yards)....but not as tough a test as it's neighbour Hillside!

Played for first time in very windy conditions 22mph, course in winter not the same as summer golf but still well worth it.

Outstanding
A truly outstanding golf course!
From the warmest of welcomes when you enter the clubhouse, to the extremely helpful starter, to following in the footsteps of golfing legends, through to playing an absolutely superb golf course this was an outstanding experience.
The golf course is as you'd expect it, in amazing condition with beautiful fairways & greens. You have to be thinking all the time to avoid the hazards & keep yourself in play.
Most of the greens look like upturned saucers, so you have to be cautious & accurate
It was a classic links day when we played with 25mph winds which made the challenge even harder.
It's not cheap, but if you get the chance it's a must play golf course.

Fantastic experience pricey but a must if you can
Played as part of a package with YGT to Southport. The walk up rate is eye watering but how often do you get to play a course that hosts Major Championships? Superb condition with well defined fairways & greens against the penal linksy rough. Couple of the par 5s become 4s for handicap golfers which makes it more playable for mortals. Excellent greens, stay out of bunkers & rough to score well, then buy your shirt in the pro shop.

Must play course
The ?185 winter visitor rates are expensive, but this is a bucket list course you aren't going to play every week. The course was in good condition despite the recent weather and a real challenge as the wind picked up. Honestly, I'd rather play Formby, Hillside or Royal Lytham now that Birkdale is ticked off my bucket list, must it's a must play course despite the cost, even if only once!

Dreamtime
A great test of golf, in perfect condition, with a historic, yet relaxed clubhouse with an assortment of open and ryder cup memorabilia, Not overly long playing off the yellows, but bunkers and rough obviously tough, absolutely tremendous experience!

Great all round experience
From the moment you arrive at Royal Birkdale it feels special. We went to the front door which was locked but were met with smiles and polite guidance to the pro shop - with a quick guided tour of the clubhouse en route. Range tokens were offered up without charge, the range was empty bar one other person. We enjoyed a drink for nominal charge in the bar overlooking the 18th green before setting out for the course.
The starter greeted us with more smiles and a relaxed but helpful manner offering up some guidance for the only ?blind? drive coming back up hole 9.
I won't try talk through each hole and shot but needless to say it was full of ups and downs with the course being the constant highlight. Bunkers are placed in the right places but are fair whilst penal. The rough was also not ridiculous - meaning I played with the same ball most of the round. Pars on 17 and 18 were a highlight. I hit two good drives setting up shots to the green on both. I came up short on 17 and went in the right trap on 18 but that is part of the fun of Birkdale. To try emulate Harrington (badly!) in 2008. What a unique opportunity for a mid handicap golfer. 34 stableford points and a win within my 3 ball sealed the deal for me. Royal Birkdale will always hold a bit of magic for me.
