25 English Golf Courses That You Should Play in 2024

By: Kieran Clark | Fri 31 May 2024

We're now firmly in the midst of the golf season and it's time to take full advantage of that fact by playing some new courses.

If you're a club member, you may fancy the occasional day out to experience another layout, while the nomadic golfers among you are always looking for somewhere recommended to discover - especially if there is a bargain to be had too.

Therefore, it's fitting that we are back with some more venues that have been rated positively in the past year by members of the Golfshake Community

Covering a diverse range of places and locations, here are 25 English Golf Courses That You Should Play in 2024!

The Springs Golf Club

The Springs

Location: Wallingford, Oxfordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.11

Green Fees: From £50

Review Comment: "Having just spent a weekend here I can honestly say this is one of the nicest places. Course wasn't long but can catch you out if you're not careful. Greens were immaculate and the bunkers are the best in the area. The clubhouse was very modern and has fair prices. All in all a great deal and I will be returning!"

Aston Wood Golf Club

Location: Sutton Coldfield, Staffordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.49

Green Fees: From £38

Review Comment: "Great day. Very good set up. Course was in immaculate condition and the staff really looked after us. Definitely be back."

Lydd Golf Club

Lydd Golf Club

Location: Romney Marsh, Kent

Golfshake Rating: 4.03

Green Fees: From £20

Review Comment: "This is probably the most challenging golf course and at the same time, a rewarding course in Kent. The tees and greens are in great condition and the layout is second to none. When the wind is up it is a monster but all categories of play will be impressed on a bright, calm day."

Wishaw Golf Club

Location: Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands

Golfshake Rating: 4.24

Green Fees: From £35

Review Comment: "Nice course not far from The Belfry. Quite short but accuracy is rewarded, it's hard to make a good score if you're in any of the many trees that line the holes. Course was in good condition."

East Brighton Golf Club

East Brighton Golf Club

Location: Brighton, East Sussex

Golfshake Rating: 4.06

Green Fees: From £50

Review Comment: "East Brighton is a lovely well laid out course with amazing views over the ocean. The course winds into a valley before heading to the top of the course. Greens were in really good condition and faster than I have seen them before."

Uttoxeter Golf Club

Uttoxeter Golf Club

Location: Uttoxeter, Staffordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.17

Green Fees: From £25

Review Comment: "Great welcome, lovely food. Course in smashing condition despite rain. Greens very smooth, great views from lots of tees. A fee blind tee shots and a couple of very tight fairways. Local knowledge helps."

Badgemore Park

Badgemore Park

Location: Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.26

Green Fees: From £30

Review Comment: "A real challenge. It may seem a short course but at a par 69 you’re doing well to shoot your handicap. Variety of different clubs required off the tee and being in the right position is extremely important, those that like to spray it will be punished."

Mickleover Golf Club

Location: Derby, Derbyshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.36

Green Fees: From £20

Review Comment: "Great course in great condition. Not long but you have to be straight. There's plenty of challenge. Food and drink very reasonably priced and friendly clubhouse. Lovely place."

Cavendish Golf Club

Cavendish Golf Club

Location: Buxton, Derbyshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.43

Green Fees: From £55

Review Comment: "Played at Cavendish Golf Club yesterday with my local society. It was a beautiful course, challenging and playable. Designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, who designed Augusta National. It's excellent and we will return. Highly recommended."

Tidworth Garrison Golf Club

Location: Tidworth, Wiltshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.35

Green Fees: From £34

Review Comment: "Best course played this year. Great course in superb nick. Greens were extremely quick - a joy to play! Great staff. Nothing too much trouble."

Stockwood Vale Golf Club

Stockwood Vale

Location: Bristol, Gloucestershire

Golfshake Rating: 4.24

Green Fees: From £26.25

Review Comment: "Course in excellent condition with fast greens. Lots of interesting and challenging holes. Very good food."

Woodhall Spa Golf Club

Woodhall Spa

Location: Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.90

Green Fees: From £85

Review Comment: "Well, if the Hotchkin is difficult, this one can verge on the impossible. Its defence is the green complexes and some look like they've got elephants buried under them. Many holes need a real thought process to get from tee to green. The bunkers aren't as numerous as the Hotchkin, but they all seem to be in the wrong (right?) place. And just for good measure there's plenty of water hazards to catch you out."

Enville Golf Club

Location: Stourbridge, Staffordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.86

Green Fees: From £105

Review Comment: "Top class. Great day out even in the rain, course played amazing and we are only in April, weeks ahead of my home club. What a place to play golf, did both courses over two days and both as good as each other with velvet greens."

The North Shore Golf Club

Location: Skegness, Lincolnshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.33

Green Fees: From £25

Review Comment: "Been wanting to play this course for years. Finally got my opportunity this weekend. Two courses in one. Part parkland and part links. Lovely views of the sea along the top part of the course. Greens fast, some very testing. Shot a shocking score - but didn't care! Big thank you to all the people concerned in running the club."

Pyecombe Golf Club

Pyecombe Golf Club

Location: Brighton, West Sussex

Golfshake Rating: 4.39

Green Fees: From £32.50

Review Comment: "Very enjoyable golf course, with lovely views and in very good condition. It's quite hilly and there are some blind shots, but well worth a visit. I will be back!"

Gosfield Lake Golf Club

Location: Halstead, Essex

Golfshake Rating: 4.16

Green Fees: From £26

Review Comment: "First time at Gosfield, and will relish another go. Not really knowing the flow of the course, and the hazards that lurk around blind corners, and hills. I like the flow to this course, with a few ups and downs and strategically placed greens behind bunkers or lakes. I would say acurracy helps on this lovely course."

Cotswold Edge Golf Club

Location: Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire

Golfshake Rating: 4.45

Green Fees: From £16

Review Comment: "Love this course. Challenging and beautiful. If you don't come up with a strategy and just blast it the back nine will haunt you."

Isle of Wedmore Golf Club

Location: Wedmore, Somerset

Golfshake Rating: 4.30

Green Fees: From £45

Review Comment: "Really liked this course. It's quite tight, but not overly long so offered a good balance of risk and reward. Greens were in great condition, really liked the putting, chipping and driving nets next to the first tee. Overall, enjoyed the round a lot."

Addington Palace Golf Club

Addington Palace Golf Club

Location: Addington, Surrey

Golfshake Rating: 4.51

Green Fees: From £55

Review Comment: "Great condition for the time of the year. The greens ran true, fairways and tee boxes in great shape too. Well done Addington Palace GC, it's the second time I've played here and would love to come back again."

Cirencester Golf Club

Cirencester Golf Club

Location: Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Golfshake Rating: 4.36

Green Fees: From £52

Review Comment: "Great to play this gem again. Course was lush and green, in fantastic condition. Despite being busy we still got round in four hours as a four ball. A lovely Cotswold course I would highly recommend."

Normanton Golf Club

Location: Wakefield, West Yorkshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.04

Green Fees: From £20

Review Comment: "Very nice course and not the easiest. But in excellent all round condition. Greens fast and true. Big thank you to everyone concerned with the running and upkeep of the club. Hopefully will see you again."

Royal Cromer Golf Club

Location: Cromer, Norfolk

Golfshake Rating: 4.82

Green Fees: From £75

Review Comment: "Royal Cromer never fails to deliver. From the first tee to the last it has spectacular views. The course runs effortlessly along the coast. It's easy to follow. The holes are challenging, and the cost is very reasonable."

Thorpeness Golf Club & Hotel

Thorpeness Golf Club

Location: Aldeburgh, Suffolk

Golfshake Rating: 4.13

Green Fees: From £40

Review Comment: "The course was in really good condition considering the vast amount of rain falling recently, obviously good drainage. The course is challenging and very enjoyable. The food and service is top class and the staff are very welcoming. Highly recommend this golf course and venue."

Cleeve Hill Golf Club

Location: Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

Golfshake Rating: 4.24

Green Fees: From £25

Review Comment: "If your legs are up for the challenge, and this course isn't easy walking, then you'll be rewarded with a lovely course and some outstanding views. The greens, tees and fairways are good rather than outstanding, but some of the holes are really pretty. The holes I loved were all downhill, 9, 10, 17 and 18, but the views as you work your way down to the 13th are stunning. The fairways are all pretty wide and the greens aren't the trickiest you'll play, so the main protection is when the wind blows. There's little to protect you from it. The clubhouse certainly has seen better days, but there was a warm welcome there and in the pro shop. I would absolutely recommend Cleeve Hill."

Clacton on Sea Golf Club

Location: Clacton, Essex

Golfshake Rating: 4.55

Green Fees: From £45

Review Comment: "Excellent course and set up. Front nine quite wooded, then becomes much more of a links style. Plenty of decisions to be made on the way round. Nice people run it too."
