The Best Place to Play Golf in The UK

By: Golfshake Editor | Tue 03 Jan 2023

With the Golfshake golf course review system close to 300,000 independent reviews it got us thinking about where is the best place to play golf in the UK. We often use the data to compile articles on the best locations to play and the best golf courses to visit but when it comes to the destination, where is the actual best place?

The Golfshake system is regularly used by 10000s of golfers when researching where to play, reviewing the best courses and reading 1000s of reviews left by average golfers within the Golfshake golf course guide and directory.  So the data held provided the perfect information to review and analyse to help single out the must visit golf location.

Best places to play golf in the UK

To analyse the data we didn't want to simply list the best courses so set about breaking down the 12 main regions of the UK based on golf course density. We may come back at a later time to review the individual counties.

But for now, we crunched the data from over 200,000 reviews for golf courses in the UK that had had more than 10 reviews submitted to Golfshake with reviews left over the last few years. And to ensure the results were fair we based the analysis firstly on the average review figure for all courses in the region. We then took the average for the top 20% of the courses in the region. Before finally comparing the average of the top 10 golf courses in each region.

So where is the number one place in the UK for golf?

This may not surprise many but the number one place for golf in the UK was...

Scotland - the Home of Golf!

Below you will find the result table detailing each region, number of coursers included and then the rating for each of the 3 categories. The Golfshake review algorithm ranks data out of 5 after the reviews that are submitted are left out of 10. As you will see Scotland top the ranking in each of the 3 categories for analysing the average review data for all 388 golf courses featured.

So, given Scotland is the place you should visit on your next golf outing we have rounded up some of the best Golfshake features on playing golf in Scotland below:
