Western Gailes Is Brilliant
I played Western Gailes on a wonderful Monday afternoon in mid-August 2024. A review of my round will be part of a feature in Golf Oklahoma Magazine in February 2025. Western Gailes is a brilliant design and the setting alongside the Firth of Clyde is better than advertised! Any excursion to Scotland for golf needs to include a trek to the west coast of Scotland, where you'll find Western Gailes awaiting your arrival!Reviewer Rating

Excellent
Played in March on a dry but cold day. Greens are fast and the course is in great shape for the time of year.Reviewer Rating

Must play, pure links
Absolutely outstanding and a first class test of links golf. Superlatives can't really describe how good this course and well laid out the holes are amongst the ayrshire coastline. Must play, would visit again and happy memories for a long time.Reviewer Rating

One of the best links in the country
Played it at the end of an unusually dry summer, the course was fantastically baked out like an Open from the 1970s. There have been recent renovations, some bunkers filled in, swales added to the course, new routing of the stream on 16, fairway improvements on 17, they've taken a classic and improved it.Greens were very smooth and pure, ran much quicker than you'd expect on a links perhaps because they're a little sheltered from the wind. Some greens are small (7) but a challenge with the contours, some are huge (18) and equally so. It's a course that needs played many times to work out the best approach and were to hit it. Every shot needed thinking about, it's quite mentally draining! I scored well but still came away feeling it had beaten me. A formidable foe.

Great Course - Stunning Location
I LOVED playing at Western Gailes. As a historic links course, its so extremely natural and the land it lays on is perfect for links golf. The course plays out round and back in meaning depending on the wind direction, youll get an even split of into and down wind.
The fairways and approached are undulating and the greens themselves are great to putt on. Some of the views on the tee boxes are spectacular too.
Some blind shots from the tees, but nothing you cant try and work out with the course guide.
A few blind bunkers and burns come into play too.
This will just bring you so much joy.
