Has Snow Closed Your Golf Course This Week

By: | Wed 17 Jan 2024

Just when you thought we had seen the back of the repeated storms and torrential rain that has presented a major challenge to greenkeepers across the UK & Ireland, many of our favourite golf courses have now been struck by snow and icy conditions this week.

Admittedly, it does create the odd pretty picture or two - with golfers swapping their clubs for a camera to capture a glimpse of their local club being transformed into a winter wonderland.

From the Highlands of Scotland to the North of England, hundreds of courses have been closed for a day or two as temperatures plummeted below freezing.

Some have now reopened, but others will probably have to wait for conditions to become a little milder over the weekend.

But as we said, the snow is a photographer's paradise, and golf courses make for the perfect canvas.

Here are just some of the best images that we have seen during this cold snap:

How about this view of the fearsome 14th hole (Foxy) at Royal Dornoch, captured by club captain David Bell. Just look at those contours!

Ballyliffin is one of Ireland's jewels - and it looks pretty spectacular at the moment!

Tucked away in the North East of Scotland, golfers flock to Cruden Bay to experience a truly authentic course, but play was understandably halted due to the snow!

The Lake District looks quite a picture from this view shared by Windermere Golf Club!

The magnificent Fraserburgh Golf Club is already looking forward to summer - and we don't blame them!

Rochdale's Marland Golf Course was properly blanketed by snowfall!

One of many fine championship links courses in England's North West, Southport & Ainsdale had a rare snow day this week!

It looks like most of the snow fell on Penwortham Golf Club just outside Preston!

Portal is a hugely popular venue among the Golfshake Community, but there wasn't much golf being played the other day!

"Bit of snow overnight on the golf course" - understatement of the year from Widnes Golf Club's Head Greenkeeper David Steventon!

While we concede that these pictures are beautiful - and golf courses do look stunning in the snow - they look even better under warm sunshine and that's why we're already counting down the days to the start of the season!
