Interesting course
This is a regular course on my circuit of courses. The price and ease of booking makes it easy to set up a group visit.The course has several ponds providing challenges. On this occassion a pond was overflowing after heavy overnight rain and we all got wet feet. The ducks were loving it!

Hadn't played here for a few years. Was nice to come back. Course was in better condition than I remembered it and played well. Greens and aprons were super firm so needed to land most shots short. Rolled well once on them though. Well looked after by the club before the round via lunch. Excellent curry after in the place immidiately next door. Will head back sooner rather than later to play again.

Nice 1990s parkland course
The 1990s saw many new golf clubs some have stayed the course, some not. Stapleford Abbots felt like one which had. The course is more interesting than some, with good green sites which offer up challenges with slopes making putting interesting and bunkers to require precise approach shots. The greens were a little harder than the average 1990s course, which I liked as it made direction as well as distance important when approaching the green. My main concern was at some of the layout, particularly the sharp doglegs; the one played towards the M25 bordered on playing to a corkscrew. The 90 degree dogleg seems to be a feature on 90s courses, while no doubt forcing a longer approach shot they force a hole to be played just one way, rather than offering risk and reward. Indeed I wonder, given the fact that all of the front nine is dogleg holes were doglegs left, whether the designer was having a small joke, given Essex’s reputation for not being left wing.Reviewer Rating
