What the club says: The 18 hole, par 71 championship golf course measures 6,361 yards. The layout is typical of that from the world renowned golf course architect Harry Colt, known for course designs such as Wentworth, Sunningdale and Royal Portrush.
Laid out in 1936 the course offers a great challenge with gently undulating fairways lined with trees. The greens always present a true putting surface and are framed by trees or landscaped mounds with many of them being protected by the cleverly placed bunkers to catch the wayward approach shot. The course consists of two loops of nine holes enabling golfers to start and finish their rounds near the clubhouse.

First day back from Lockdown2 Maylands
First time at Maylands for me but my playing colleagues have played several times. First impressions circa new C19 rules was a nice clubhouse suitable for all sorts of functions. Nice snack and coffee before we start. Cost was ?25 which for midweek winter golf was a bit high. Right the course was in reasonable condition with the greens a little long but this is understandable. Course was ok played off yellows just under 6k in length but somehow did not feel that long. Course was not that difficult whether it is much harder in Summer because of the overlying trees is yet to be seen. Its a beautiful area with an abundance of wildlife which is lovely to see, I've not seen this amount of Deer anywhere so that was great to see even if you are dodging the droppings on the way round . Overall a great experience.

Definitely worth playing
Played this over a number of years when visiting the area, and always improving. Currently undergoing some course changes so need to see how they pan out, but seem like they will be a step forward overall. Like many courses, some issues with bunkers, and seems they have a programme of selected removal to cut costs.

Graham
We have battled because of Covid to make sure all our society golf competitions take place . Managed to book Maylands for 36 of us for 18 holes bacon rolls and coffee on arrival and burger after finishing for £40 . I think that is a very decent price for a Friday . Clubs need to make money and there were 4 societies out on the course thus very slow as we were the last society to tee off at 11.50 am as first tee time . Because of weather fairways are dry but no worse than others . Course lay out is a good society course . It was very windy thus a test of golf and 37 points won the singles and I shot 34 points off 18 . Not perfect but I think the price made it decent value . Not sure I would like to be a member and stroll up at 2pm and find 4 societies ahead of me .

Nice golf but you pay for it!
My friends and I have played Maylands fairly regularly over the last few years. It's a nice course that's not too tough, but enough of a challenge to bring us back, and usually at a very reasonable price. So with the recent virus situation happening Maylands was high on the list of courses to visit when golf was deemed safe to play. I booked for myself and half a dozen mates, and on a sunny afternoon we arrived at the course.
It was only as I parked up that one of my friends came over to tell me the green fees were ?30 each for the round!
It seems the club had put up the prices that morning, and it was ?30 each and no concessions!
Someone mentioned that the club probably needed to recoup some of the money it had lost during the recent enforced break... but hang on, all of us customers have lost money either in lost work or through our pensions being hit, so if that is the case it certainly isn't fair?
I'm afraid to say that Maylands is a good course, but not a great course, and certainly not worth ?30 to play, and until this changes there's a dozen or more of us that won't be back.

Good even during winter
temp tees but still the course was playable. Play here during the summer and we?ll looked after.

Maylands is a little gem of a course in Essex, inside the M25
Got a great deal through Golf Deals Group, ?29 for 2, including coffee and bacon sandwich. A fantastic deal. Heard that Maylands was a nice course and it didn't really disappoint, even though is was very wet and grass mats were in play on every hole, but no temporary greens, which was surprising, but welcome. There are some nice holes and some average ones, but that's very much the same everywhere, in my opinion. The closeness to the M25 didn't really bother us and it only comes into play on 3, maybe 4 holes and the sound from it isn't that loud. The wildlife was evident with herds of deer parading around as if they owned the place. With the very wet conditions they did make some holes look a bit worse for wear, with hoof marks everywhere, but this was only evident on about 3 holes and the deer added to the enjoyment of playing here. Favourite holes, would have to be the 8th, 9th, 12th and 14th. A good mix of holes, with varying degrees of difficulty. The pro-shop was a bit sparse of items, but the old barn clubhouse was comfortable and the food was good. Friendly staff made it an enjoyable day and I'd come back in the summer to see how the course plays then.

very good course - even better dry

Five Tear Return
It had been 5 years since I played this course. I wasn?t sure what to expect but the course maintained the same challenge as I had remembered. Still a great layout but the M25 road noise was ever present. It didn?t spoil the round as the course has some great holes, especially the par 3?s. Like many courses now however the investment just isn?t there in the back up facility?s. I couldn?t even buy a pencil in the pro shop! It seems the only thing that has improved is the deer population.

Return to familiar ground
The course seems to be a popular venue but this have it's effect on the condition of the course because of the enormous traffic on the course the greens were very bumpy and a lot of the surrounds was very bear and the bunkers could definitely do with some sand, this said the deer on the course was a pleasant sight although they can cause a bit of damage to the greens and bunkers(Round played: Oct 2019 - Score: 87 Handicap: 11.6)
