Could be so much better
Fairways are woolly, rough is penal, uneven lengths and generally looks unkempt. Bunkers are unloved and more than a few have grass growing in them. The greens however, are fantastic, so you can see where the money has been spent. The rest leaves a bad taste and needs putting right quickly if Romford is to maintain it's reputation. The club house is old style and the welcome is always warm. Food is terrific

Bit Disappointed
Romford could, and probably should be better. I should add the caveat to this by saying that in fairness to the course, we did visit during maintenance week and the green fee that the club charged did reflect this, however, I had been looking forward to experiencing this locally revered course for some time and I was left feeling under whelmed.I don't want to be overly negative, the course does have some lovely holes with plenty of fair bunkering containing good quality sand, and I can see how it would have gained it's reputation back in the 'glory years'. However, the layout is without doubt 'a bit crazy', particularly around the 11th green/12th/17th/18th tees all of which criss-cross and are right on top of each other; it must be utter-carnage on busy days, particularly with people teeing off on the 18th trying to avoid those coming down the 11th (suggest purchasing golf insurance if you're playing on a busy day!). As I've already acknowledged, it was maintenance week so we must make several allowances, particularly for the greens, but if we use the condition of other local courses that I play regularly as a yard stick, particularly after this hard summer for green staff, the general state of the playing area as a whole wasn't great. While the putting green had aeration holes and sand present, I completely acknowledge, a vital part of green maintenance, many of the actual greens had scaring akin to much more than an aerator, and the fairways were balding in enough places for it to be noticeable. Perhaps my expectations for a course with the history and local prestige of somewhere like Romford were, and arguably should have been higher than other courses, particularly if you consider the regular week day green fee of pushing ?40, but it's a shame that my impressions of the course having played it for the first time aren't as good as I'd hoped.
I hate to be too negative and I've tried to be fair, I know green staff work very hard, it's been a tough summer and I will go back to give the course a second chance I'm sure. However, there is much work to be done if it's to live up to the expectations of it's local reputation, publicised images and importantly, price tag suggest.

Not recovered well from weather
Nice setting, but they seem to have really struggled to get the course tidied up following the weather. Slow greens accepted where they are improving them, with heavy spiking, and grass a bit long (got a good price for the round). Main concern was long and thatched dead grass on the fairways, as if they dared not cut it while so dry and the longer dead stuff was then flatted by the rain and the mower can't pick it up. Also bare patches. Needs some serious man hours to tidy it up.(Round played: Aug 2018 - Score: 101 Handicap: 22.7)
