Totally let down

Right - my group of 12 club golfers booked to play a round at I o P on Sept 14th - I waited to see if I would hear further from them, but no!

Good course, great holes and wonderful views. However:

1. They had our booking, but had forgotten to book tee times for us, so we were rushed to the 8th tee without finishing our snacks and drinks
2. For some reason, buggies were banned, so our pre-booked buggies not available, which meant some of us, being elderly, were unable to play, and had to wait in the Clubhouse. Excuse was waterlogged course, which was not true
3. Greens were ridiculous - good healthy grass, but either NOT cut, or cut to c 10mm. Either way, so slow as to be unplayable IMHO
4. Most of the paths were stony, pitted, and an accident waiting to happen.
I complained to the day to the lady in the Office who was courteous and apologetic, but no real explanation. It would have been a simple gesture to have offered us a partial refund, or maybe a drink on the house - but nothing at all.

Great course, but needs either a change of Greenkeeper, Management or both!

Dear Peter, thank you for sharing your feedback. We set a high standard for ourselves and we’re so sorry your experience didn’t match your expectations.

??We’re very sorry the tees weren’t booked in correctly for your group as this was entirely our fault. When the date of your booking was changed we altered the date but unfortunately forgot to re-allocate the tee times to the new date. I can assure you this is an extremely rare occurrence. We felt asking your group to start from the 8th tee was the best solution on the day as it is close to the clubhouse and there would not be any golfers putting pressure on you from either behind or in front.

Over the last couple of years we have made considerable investments in the golf course and as other reviewers have posted, are seeing very positive results. As a result of the drought through the Summer, the greenskeepers have not been able to cut the putting surfaces as short as they would like in order to help ensure healthy greens. This means the greens have been running at 8-9 on the stimpmeter rather than their target of 9-10.

Likewise, due to the undulating terrain, when the playing surfaces are excessively wet, the greenskeepers can make the decision to not allow buggies due to the risks associated. We note that on the day of your visit, the golf club closest to us was actually closed for play during the morning, an indication of how heavy the overnight rain was.

Please do feel free to reach out to Philippe with any further comments, concerns, or suggestions you wish to share. ??We would love to make things right if you give us another chance. The contact number for the Pro Shop is 01929 450354 (option 1)

Not a course for handicaps >15 or those that can’t clear 150yards minimum off 3very tee. Fairways very poor with rabbit holes and bare patches.

Awful fairways, ruining a good design

I was really disappointed with my recent round at Purbeck.

Having seen many pictures, the course looked brilliant. I had heard a few reviews suggesting that the fairways weren't being kept up but I had no idea how bad they were. Yes the greens were ok, the tee boxes too, but given the weather we have had recently the fairways were in shocking condition. Worst I have ever played. There were many rabbit holes on the fairway, but many were also playing off of condensed mud.

We paid at the slightly reduced rate of £50 and that felt about £25 too much. The course and the views are stunning, and the staff were also incredibly helpful and friendly, but clearly the course has had zero investment in it and as a result I would not recommend to anyone.

Some had travelled from America to play it, and they cannot have been at all impressed with the standard.

Avoid at all costs

I last played the Isle of Purbeck about 15 years ago and at that time it was a gem of a course worthy of it status in the top 100 in England We visited this weekend as a group and I have to say the experience was simply awful. The fairways are burnt to a crisp and have virtually no grass on them. The greens had not been cut in a while and had disease in them. The welcome in the clubhouse was poor to say the least. The only discerning feature of this course at the moment is that it does still have great views but personally I would not go there again EVER until they make investment in the course and the clubhouse - so sad this was one a real treat sadly no longer

Not that good

The course unfortunately was not in a good condition. The fairways were very poor as were the greens. The club still want for people to pay top price when really they should lower it when the course is in this sort of condition.

Mr

P.ahed the course this week after a long absence and was looking forward to playing as I had great memories of a fantastic test of golf

Whilst the greens were recovering from it would be unfair to rate them but they were relatively quick which was a good sign

Fairways were absolutely awful and can’t see a time this summer where it would be possible to play anything but winter rules

It’s a great shame as this has the potential to be one of the countries great courses with a fantastic setting and spectacular holes

Everyone should play this course once in their lives and my message to the owners are please restore this course to a co diction it deserves whatever it takes - it’s a national treasure and should be presented as such

Disappointing

Returning to the course after 25 year gap. Fairways totally destroyed. Still the views are tremendous and the greens improving from obvious damage. Grass seed has been scattered on some fairways, but no use this year,

What a shame

Played this course yesterday, the views are outstanding and course layout is great. The maintenance of the course was very poor, no grass in many of the fairways meaning preferred lies in play. The greens are in a awful state. A 25 year member told us management has changed hands and what was a truly outstanding course is now one of the worse around the area. Such a shame as I’m sure in its peak this would be wonderful to play but now I would give this a miss.

I am a bit surprised that this is regarded as one of the top 100 Uk courses by Golf World whatever that is. The fairways are incredibly wide and several holes are very straight and similair, the 14th and 16th for example. The course lacks care and attention. Many bunkers are poorly faced and cart paths are rough and unfinished.
The location and views are spectacular but overall it felt a little tired.

Very Disappointing

This course has always been on my bucket list of places to play, Must admit I was very disappointed with the course not worth the 55 pound fee, I've played better courses for less.
Fairways were non existent hardly any grass on them just dry potted mud made the ball bounce all over the place even if you hit great shot. Greens weren't much better full of pot marks and very slow

Stunning Views, Amazing Layout, Poor Conditions

Such a shame to see a course of this magnitude in such poor condition in the height of summer. The layout and views are fantastic however the experience was ruined by diseased greens, running at a slow pace. All in all I would return to the Isle of Purbeck for the twilight fee of £25, in good condition this course could command £50 + and represent great value! Such a shame!
