Worst course I have ever played.

Well, I have to say what a disappointing experience I had at the golf course this weekend. It is safe to say the course should have been closed.

I appreciate there has been a lot of rain recently and the fairways are far from being able to be cut, but I've never played a course in worse conditions.
The fairways would grace most courses as areas around the unkempt tee boxes. The tee boxes, when you could see the markers were as long as some of the fairway grass and had not been kept or tidied for some time. The moss on the greens were happy with the wet conditions. No matter where you walked it was a quagmire. Even the greens sank beneath your feet to allow water to rise.

So why did I continue to play? This weekend I was sleeping out rough for charity and had an opportunity to visit a course in the vicinity rather lay underneath a cardboard box I thought I would visit a course.

What is worse than the course in the condition it was is that hidden within the website is an acknowledgement that the courses irrigation system has failed and the owners are aware, that the course needs investment and designer is earmarked to come in and transform it.... knowingly charging the same rates.

I think this nugget of information should be advertised more prominently. I wish I had taken the green fees and just donated it to the charity I was supporting as it would have made a better difference elsewhere!

Hi Neil
Sorry you didn't enjoy your game here with us recently. It has been the wettest winter in my 25+ years as a Golf Professional. We have been borderline open/closed for a lot of March, it has been exceptionally frustrating for all concerned.
We simply cannot get the mowers out to cut the grass, therefore we try to be open, if we can, as well as honest about course conditions.
As you booked online it doesn't offer you the human interaction, which is not your fault.
I'd love for you to come back as our guest and enjoy the course as it is improving every day

Just the one visit for me. All the Best and good luck sorting out some drainage. It's like playing in a rice field!

Would NOT recommend

Played on the 13th sep. greens were in terrible condition, almost felt unmaintained and the course layout was really odd and felt a bit micky mousey. Not good value for money and really annoyed we weren’t made aware of the state of the course and offered a discount. I personally would not play again or recommend

Poor condition even for the money

Have played a few times over the last 4-6 months with friends who are just getting into golf as it is one of the cheaper courses locally. However, even £15 for 9 holes on a twilight tee time feels difficult to justify with the state of the greens and tee boxes... Found myself assuring my friends that “most courses are in much better condition”.

Nice enough staff and has some pretty holes which I do enjoy, it really is a shame!

Very disappointed

Played Blacknest a week ago having booked 4 tee times for 16 players. The greens were dreadful. At least 5 of them had GUR patches and 1 green had the a GUR patch all the way through... so you couldn’t drop in a logical place. Worst of all, none of this was mentioned to me when booking and no discount rate was offered. In fact on the day, the pro said the greens had been worked on recently and we’re now fine. A compete lie. Every course I have played in the past would admit to the condition of the course and offer a discount, especially to a group. Seems they wanted money more than good reputation or repeat custom.

Mudbath - AVOID

Regrettably played this course on Saturday 27th January 2018 – we walked in after 11 holes due to it being a mud bath. There was no difference between the length of the grass on the fairways and the rough and there was what appeared to be a rabbit scrape in the middle of one of the greens. There was slippery mud everywhere, pools of water which were impossible to avoid. THIS COURSE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN OPEN (if only to protect the course).

We spoke to someone working in the professional shop once we had changed out of our dirty clothing and his response was “you are entitled to your opinion” – not exactly decent customer service.

We spoke to a local in the car park afterwards and he said that the course is well known in the area for being in this condition and “unplayable” for at least 3 months of the year.

PLAY IT AT YOUR PERIL.

Disappointing, the course in places was near to being unplayable. The majority of tees were under water, fairways wet and muddy and the greens were so boggy you sank into them which left them bumpy and no fun to putt on. The course has some very short holes, par 3's around 100 yards par 4's around 240 yards, no challenge for golfers of a good standard more of a junior/senior course. Were told rather rudely by the vice captain not to play from the white tees so you cant even make the most of the £24 winter green fee. Many golf courses do allow play from whites and the ones that don’t usually have a sign up or mention it on the score card. Will not be returning anytime in the near future, if you’re a reasonably good player this is one to avoid if you’re looking for a challenging high quality course during the winter seasons, try the chalk courses. Girl at the reception was very nice though.

Course lacks the attention to detail you expect from the on-line reviews; greens were poor and slow, grass cuttings were everywhere and to cap it all the welcome sign adjacent to the first tee stated that "golf shoes preferred but trainers acceptable at own risk" (and they even spelled 'preferred' incorrectly). For me that says it all. Give it a miss.

Hosted a friend whose (local) home course was hosting a Pro-Am on the day. Everything was going really well: booking, tee-time, pro-shop, practice facilities - and then we hit the course. The design itself is entertaining (notwithstanding the reputation for "a lot of water - and not only in the ponds"), but two major turn-offs. One: the greens were appalling, with almost every single putt subject to bobbles, bounces and unexpected deviations - in fact, an embarrassment. Two: It's a fair cop to drop a shot (or two) if one strays off the fairway, but to immediately lose a ball in badly cut and un-picked-up grass and debris almost every time is a bit much. My companion did not enjoy his round. With these two things fixed it would be a pleasure to host other friends.

Thank you for review. I'm sorry the greens aren't to your, or indeed our satisfaction. Course work was carried out 10 days ago and it sometimes takes longer than we'd like to fully recover.
Warm weather has meant extra rough cutting and if the grass is wet, it clumps up. Sadly you seemed to find these areas. Grass cuttings are not collected and usually disperse quickly.
Look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Disappointing

Played yesterday evening (20 August) and was was surprised by how bad the greens and tees were. The weather was beautiful, and I know it rained a lot the day before, but of the 14 holes we managed to play, the majority had areas on either tees or greens which were bare of grass and had GUR areas marked on them. The tees generally are exceptionally uneven making it hard to find a good place to tee from. This is a shame as there had been a lot of work done on the course and it had really improved. It is also frustrating that this type of information is not openly given out when booking, with maybe discounts given due to the poor condition. It is like buying a nice product only to find you have a b-grade/ex-demo item rather than a new one.

Pay for what you get

Played here Bank Holiday Monday. We took advantage of the twilight offer and so played 18 holes for £15 each. Course was fairly quiet and we got round nice and quickly with no waiting. The main points we moaned about the entire way round were the state of the tee boxes and the greens.

There was no mention when paying that the greens had been hollow tined. They were impossible to putt on. A three footer was impossible, with the ball jumping all over the place. The tee boxes were in a bit of a state. Most were not flat, with few decent patches of grass to tee a ball up on.

The course itself is OK, fairly standard up and down layout, feels like you are playing on a large field for the middle section.

But for £15 it is OK, and if the greens were better we would have been happy.
