Retired to the bar after a 5hr, 45min round only to be met with a massive queue, groups ordering tea and coffee (For petes sakes - just make them an instant coffee!!), two bar staff and then one actually left the bar to collect glasses!!
We left and went to the Coach and Horses down the road.
Our final visit, will not be going back again. A shame as the course was in fairly good condition.

Unfortunately staff not that friendly.
Also issue with them saying we had not paid all green fees which was there error but we were held as being guilty [quote - we have not got this wrong - you have not paid] for too long.

Firstly, staff always arrogant and pompous on the phone and face-to-face.
Course always overbooked, causing ridiculous round times even during the week.
I once, last 12 months, had to give up at 16th tee after 5 hours with 2 groups ahead waiting to tee off.
My last round took over 4 ½ hours due to queuing at tee's, and that's in off-peak.
It has been leaked to me that management cram in more bookings than they should because they are premium Burhill Golf & Leisure site, they want to maximise income and they want to keep to the top of "some" national tee off table; so customers suffer and we never see any stats for "rounds abandoned".
Now for the course itself:
Challenging course unless you think on your feet.
However, a lot of sand traps seem to have large pieces of wadding poking through from below; I suspect that the bunkers are too shallow and lack sand. Yet another cost saving for the management?
They have, at last, cut back the long rough; however this hasn't speeded up rounds.
So, in conclusion, could be a MUCH better place to play if only they stopped over-booking the course, made the bunkers deeper and then added more sand and gave the staff training in polite customer communication.
By way of comparison in the local area, I have never taken over 4 hours at Chelsfield Lakes, just 4 miles away, it’s cheaper and just a good a course.

What has gone wrong!
It is clear that there is a huge amount of TLC lost at Birchwood. The condition of the fairways - no one seems to have been told to replace their divots; greens are pock marked/ diseased/ no care and attention by greenkeeper; and the bunkers are missing sand. What has happened and where are the Burhill directors to take stock of the situation. If this was a municipal course in terrible condition you would be very unhappy but a previous gem now lost to poor upkeep is disappointing.(Round played: Nov 2021 - Score: 87 Handicap: 13.1)

Needs attention
This is a lovely course and decent challenge from the back tees. A typical, open parkland course but scores are needed on the front 9 as the back 9 is very unforgiving. However, this course is in decline in the last year or so. It looks like they have given up with the bunkers; can't be bothered about the tee boxes; obviously have so many people playing they don't even bother to mention to replace divots on fairways or pitch marks on greens. This is a good course but the maintenance is negligible. Where are the people in charge?(Round played: Aug 2021 - Score: 87 Handicap: 13)

Greens and bunkers :(
Greens have been tined therefore very unpredictable - usually reliable quick greens at Birchwood but these were not great. Due to heavy rain there is hardly any soft sand in the bunkers - even good bunker players are likely to drop shots if they land in one.(Round played: Aug 2019 - Score: 86 Handicap: 11)

Needs rain
Very difficult to stop the ball running and running, good until you run out of green! No sand in bunkers, greens lightning quick makes this very tricky at the moment - either the ground staff need to water the course, or it needs to rain. Range balls are rubbish(Round played: Jul 2017 - Score: 87 Handicap: 10.5)

Nice course shame about. The bunkers
The course was ok and the greens were fine but the fairways were in need of some attention but the worst thing were the bunkers which had virtually no sand in them and the second hole the green side bunker had bushes and small trees growing in it(Round played: Jul 2017 - Score: 96 Handicap: 21.7)
