The problem that has dogged Birchwood for years is still there - namely slow play. I wouldn't go there unless in a four ball because that will be the pace no matter how many are playing. Too many people on the course and too many beginners who won't let better/faster groups through. We missed out 3 holes on the front 9 and managed to complete the back 9 but tried to do the 3 we missed but just endless groups coming through so we gave up. The scorecards now have timings every four holes or so so the management are clearly aware of the slow play issue - yet ever since I have been going to Birchwood (10+ years) this has been its number one problem.
Course in pretty good condition given the winter and the greens continue to be excellent.

Played here Saturday morning, course is looking very good my only negative was the staff. I was served by a young lady at the golf desk who was eating at the time of serving me! Once I'd told her I'd forgotten my player card she let out a sigh like I was asking to much of her to look me up on the computer which had been done with no issues before. Great course to play at the moment but don't interrupt breakfast!!

Course is in good shape and constant improvement seems to be taking place. Greens in good nick and tee boxes are under seasonal repair. However play is painfully slow with marshalls ensuring the old guard let people play through!! 3 hrs to play back 9 is inexcusable!

There's been a lot of negative reviews about Birchwood in recent times so I was reluctant to book this on a Wednesday morning. But needs must and as ever the pace of play was very slow, we didn't approach anywhere near five hours but 4 hours 20 minutes is still long for a midweek two ball on this course. The fact is that Birchwood consistently overbooks teetimes, and the course simply looks overplayed, although the greens remain good as ever.

What really rankles though is the fact that the starter initially indicated that we would be paired up with another two ball as it was peak time and they are aware of the pace of play problem. Our other two ball didn't turn up - if they were ever meant to because there seemed to be plenty of other two balls on the course. However, by the 5th hole we spotted a single player marching up the previous fairway, who we eventually let through, no problem. But how does this sit with the management's professed policy of this being a 4-ball course? If it's really that busy - and there was a society ahead of us too - why let one person on the course? The answer is simple - money. Birchwood will never turn down cash, to the detriment of the course and the enjoyment of golfers.

I should also mention the sharp practice of the website we booked this through. On the website it looked like the whole morning was free - hence why I took a chance on playing here. But those online teetimes are just there for show - as we were told at the course if we had rung direct they would have said there was a society and recommended a different tee time.

I can't say don't play Birchwood as it does have some good holes and the greens are good. But you have to accept it is overplayed and rounds are slow.

Course appears to be trying to cram as many people as possible on so far too much waiting going on/slow play.

All two-balls are being paired together with strangers to create four-balls which is unsatisfactory in my opinion.

Played birchwood for the first time today. The rough was too rough, the greens were too rough and the bunkers had the pebbles the size of half a golf ball in them. Other than that fine.

It appears that bookings are made whether there is a time slot or not
So lots of players all turn up at the same time
with identical tee off times
Also members appear not to book and just turn up at the first tee

Ignoring the undulating tee boxes, there is not doubt that this is a decent public course. However, Burhill Golf are putting greed before customer service. We booked a 7:46am tee time to beat the busy Saturday period. Arrived at the course and paid our green fees before making our way down to the first tee. There was a two ball in front of us who we got speaking to and they confirmed that they had the same tee time as us. We were then told it was course policy for us to join up with the two ball (even though at the time there was nobody on the tee behind us). We refused point blank on the basis that we wasn't told on the phone when we booked or when we paid.

The amount of golfers that are crammed into the morning sessions is ridiculous. After playing the first hole we looked back to the tee to see that around 20 golfers were waiting to tee off.

Nice course. Ignorant course management.
