Sad course

The golf course has declined over the past few years. I Suppose the bottom line is it makes money so things won't change. The golf course is in shocking condition and gives the impression nobody cares booking is also joke. Is it being run down to sell for housing. So mock money wasted on treble bunkers. Ruins your irons with the stones and ridicules rubber base . Very sad

AVOID IF YOU CAN

worst course ever. the pro shop with its rude, don't care staff made it a very painful visit. they rather stand & gossip than care for their paying customers. atmosphere is colder than the north pole. wanted to get fitted for golf clubs i purchased from them & was told i had to pay him ?30.00 for fitting when it should be free. the course is over booked which leads to slow play as well as there was 5 ball at a time. when inquired about membership all i got was a cold, ''waiting list with 400 on it''. not the way to treat customers. it's embarrassing to write this negative review for me.

questionable condition

I have played this course for a lot of years and seen the ups and downs. We are now very much in a down phase - the bunkers have not been raked since before lockdown; the greens are like concrete in April - where is the watering? there is little fairway definition and the tee boxes appear very scruffy. At this time, it is hard to recommend playing here.

The course is in very poor condition. It hasn't seen water for weeks so everywhere is like a cart path. For some reason the greens have been treated with sand so they are completely lifeless and not good to putt on. Added to this is Birchwood's continued policy of allowing two balls and even single players on the course at peak times so we had to wait on every tee for groups to play.

We have never complained before, we are a group of 4 ladies we teed off yesterday afternoon and were harassed non stop with a group of lads on two golf buggies. We were abused and threatened and when we came into the club house for shelter and comfort, the staff says this always happens as the current management team are too scared to turnaway travellers. The manager refused to speak to my ladies and we shall never be back. please please be aware of this place.

Gave Birchwood another go but once again slow play ruins the day. Had an "older gentlemen" three-ball in front of us(we were a two-ball) and despite spending sometimes up to 5/10 mins searching for lost balls refused to wave us through. This started on the third hole and continued through the full 18. On the 15th There were 3 groups waiting on the tee whist they looked for yet another lost ball 50 yds on the left.. Ludicrous.

Retired to the bar after a 5hr, 45min round only to be met with a massive queue, groups ordering tea and coffee (For petes sakes - just make them an instant coffee!!), two bar staff and then one actually left the bar to collect glasses!!

We left and went to the Coach and Horses down the road.

Our final visit, will not be going back again. A shame as the course was in fairly good condition.

If you want good food or have a go on the driving range or even play the Par 3 then, yes your get your moneys worth. but being a previous member I left because the tees are so uneven, your either playing the ball below or above your feet not good. And the greens are dreadful, slow and have so many pitch marks you would spend all day on just one green to repair it. Yes this is because people do repair their pitch marks then again if you dont mind a course thats sooooo over played and crowed that I walked of on many occasions due to waiting over 10mins on evey shot never mind Teeing off.
So yes I am annoyed exmember who DOES like the course but unfortunetly does not like playing a 4 1/2 + round during the midweek where money and numbers seem to count for more. My hcp 14

I am never playing there again, I have tried hard below to be objective and dispassionate, read on...
Firstly, staff always arrogant and pompous on the phone and face-to-face.
Course always overbooked, causing ridiculous round times even during the week.
I once, last 12 months, had to give up at 16th tee after 5 hours with 2 groups ahead waiting to tee off.
My last round took over 4 ½ hours due to queuing at tee's, and that's in off-peak.
It has been leaked to me that management cram in more bookings than they should because they are premium Burhill Golf & Leisure site, they want to maximise income and they want to keep to the top of "some" national tee off table; so customers suffer and we never see any stats for "rounds abandoned".
Now for the course itself:
Challenging course unless you think on your feet.
However, a lot of sand traps seem to have large pieces of wadding poking through from below; I suspect that the bunkers are too shallow and lack sand. Yet another cost saving for the management?
They have, at last, cut back the long rough; however this hasn't speeded up rounds.

So, in conclusion, could be a MUCH better place to play if only they stopped over-booking the course, made the bunkers deeper and then added more sand and gave the staff training in polite customer communication.

By way of comparison in the local area, I have never taken over 4 hours at Chelsfield Lakes, just 4 miles away, it’s cheaper and just a good a course.

Fair condition

Played Birchwood in the past, was always busy at the weekends, 5+ hour rounds the norm so now avoid it. However, played it again during the Easter weekend at twilight. Prices have gone up like many other golf courses. The range is good, practice green decent, clubhouse/facilities also good but lacks character. The course itself has good variation of holes, hilly in places but walkable. Greens were still recovering from the winter and coring but fairly quick and true, Many tee areas either not flat, bare or had so many divots we preferred to tee off 2m behind the markers

What has gone wrong!

It is clear that there is a huge amount of TLC lost at Birchwood. The condition of the fairways - no one seems to have been told to replace their divots; greens are pock marked/ diseased/ no care and attention by greenkeeper; and the bunkers are missing sand. What has happened and where are the Burhill directors to take stock of the situation. If this was a municipal course in terrible condition you would be very unhappy but a previous gem now lost to poor upkeep is disappointing.

Needs attention

This is a lovely course and decent challenge from the back tees. A typical, open parkland course but scores are needed on the front 9 as the back 9 is very unforgiving. However, this course is in decline in the last year or so. It looks like they have given up with the bunkers; can't be bothered about the tee boxes; obviously have so many people playing they don't even bother to mention to replace divots on fairways or pitch marks on greens. This is a good course but the maintenance is negligible. Where are the people in charge?

Greens and bunkers :(

Greens have been tined therefore very unpredictable - usually reliable quick greens at Birchwood but these were not great. Due to heavy rain there is hardly any soft sand in the bunkers - even good bunker players are likely to drop shots if they land in one.

Very difficult to stop the ball running and running, good until you run out of green! No sand in bunkers, greens lightning quick makes this very tricky at the moment - either the ground staff need to water the course, or it needs to rain. Range balls are rubbish
