18 Affordable Golf Courses to Play This Winter

Whilst it might still feel like we have only just arrived in autumn, it's not long before we reach the more testing months for winter golf - colder, wetter and limited opportunities to play.  But for those of us still needing our golfing fix, here you will find the first in a series of articles focused on helping you get more from your winter golf.

This first articles looks at some of the venues well worth visiting in winter, based on the favourable reviews submitted to the Golfshake golf course review system but all offering cheaper winter prices and some excellent affordable packages.  All come highly rated and you might even find one or two hidden gems listed amongst the 18.

Described as "one of the best courses, condition wise in the area, especially in winter. Good maintenance and good course management helping to keep play moving".  Mardyke Valley is rated 3.9 from over 430 independent golf course reviews on Golfshake.

Cavendish Golf Club

Cavendish

Cavendish is a firm Golfshake favourite and rated 4.6 from over 100 reviews.  With 2021 winter improvements complete this looks set to be a great location for winter golf and recently described as "Great course in the Peak District. Playing superbly for this time of year with fast greens and immaculate fairways."

College Pines Golf Club

A course that may fall under the radar to others in the area but this is certainly a popular venue and maybe a bit of an unsung hero.  Rated 4.3 from over 300 reviews, College Pines continues to receive accolades and as been described as a "winter golfing Mecca for a large surrounding area", providing "Bomb proof for winter golf".

Sharpley Golf Centre

Sharpley Golf

With midweek golf priced from just over £20 this is great location for some winter golf. Quoted as "only closing when it snows" and a "great course to play in winter" this could me one to visit during the winter months.

Styrrup Hall Golf and Country Club

Described as "always great in winter" we can see why Styrrup Hall is highly rated on Golfshake with a rating of 4.3 from over 300 reviews.

South Yorkshire, North East

Longhirst Hall Golf Club

Highly rated at 4.6 from over 300 reviews, Longhirst Hall Golf Club could offer that little bit more for winter golf.  With 2 18 hole courses available there is an option for everyone, especially golf societies with packages available from only £27

Heysham Golf Club

Heysham Golf Club is rated 4.3 on Golfshake and commended for its layout and conditions.  With reviews commenting on the condition of the course during the off-season this could be a course worth visiting considering it is priced at 50% of the summer green fee.

Silloth-on-Solway Golf Club

With a winter green at such exceptional value is this the "hidden gem" in the list?  Silloth-on-Solway is rated an exceptionally impressive 5 out of 5 from over 50 reviews and continues to receive positive reviews and plaudits with one review stating that this venue is "well worth taking the time to get here".

Pedham Place Golf Centre

Pedham Place Golf Centre

Pedham Place offer an 18 hole course and 9 hole par 3 and is rated highly at 4.1 from over 800 reviews, highlighting how popular this venue is.   The venue offers a variety of green fee prices depending on the day and time as well as offers aimed at society golfers. 

One Golfshake review described Pedham Place Golf as "a brilliant course to play in winter. Decent facilities at the clubhouse plus a driving range make this a real find, highly recommended".

Chipstead Gold Club

Chipstead is rated 3.9 from over 140 reviews and described as being an "Excellent course for winter. Greens with proper roll & all the breaks. Fairways free from mud".  What more could you ask for when it comes to winter golf!

Surrey, South East

Tall Pines Golf Club

Simply described as a ‘Winter wonderland’ and great to play in the winter. Rated 4.5 from almost 100 reviews this course comes highly recommended for winter golf at great value.

Winter Green Fees: Twilight golf available from £17.50 with full 18 hole rounds priced from £30 for a midweek round.

Somerset, South West

Oakridge Golf Club

When the nights start drawing in and the temperature drops we all need a “Winter surprise” - which is what one review described Oakridge Golf Club as.   This course is highly recommended and rated 4.1 from over 100 reviews.

The Shropshire continues to receive favourable reviews and is rated 4.3 from over 400 reviews and particularly rated for its conditions all year round.

Henllys Hall Golf Club

With a course condition rating of 4.6, Henllys Hall continues to impress and provides excellent value for money for winter golf for those who fancy a trip to Anglesey.  At just 5,821 yards this course may offer a slightly different challenge when we reach the tough testing winter months but still want to enjoy our golf.

Prestatyn Golf Club

The club describe the course as being set in a "temperate climate and its seaside nature ensures that golfers can play the greens all the year round".   The winter green fees offer exceptional value for money and the Golfshake reviews back up the clubs statement with one comment stating "Can’t beat in winter. If you want to find a dry course in winter this is the place for you."  Rated at 4.5 from over 90 reviews we think this is one to visit

Lochmaben Golf Club

A James Braid designed course offering visitors a parkland layout with some historic connections.  Lochmaben offers some excellent winter green fee prices and is highly rated on Golfshake from the most recent reviews.

Cowdenbeath Golf Club

Cowdenbeath Golf Club is rated at 4.1 on Golfshake and recently described as "what a lovely' surprise".  In an area with so many historic courses, this relatively new course (founded in 1996), provides affordable priced golf to some of the more famouse courses nearby.
