Challenging and enjoyable!

Premier course was boggy in parts and very challenging, some beautiful views on many holes! Lots of hills involved.

I found the course a bit boring in places, Long wide fairways with not many fairway bunkers. Hardly any severe dog legs and the par 5's were a matter of Drive, Belt and Chip, no need to pick your way around. The greens were in very good condition but on the slow side. There was a lot of grass cuttings on the fairways, which is one of my husbands pet hates.

Good Value

My wife and I took the advantage of a short break at the Portal Hotel and played the Premier Course. For other visitors be advised that two courses that Portal have (Premier and Championship) are not in the same place and are about a two minute drive from each other. The course in places a bit up and down but tree lined with few fairway bunkers. One thing I did not like was the amount of grass cuttings left on the fairways. The hotel staff and golf staff are excellent and very friendly and even though we did not get to play the Championship course, due to an injury, we still had an enjoyable time.

Decent Track

Coming along

A challenging course, some long holes especially against the wind. Interesting back to back par fives at holes 3 and 4, a long par 3 at 5, 8 and 9 have interesting greens, as does 12. Signature hole is probably par 3 14th, over water, but you won’t forget the long, long par 4 17th. Good fun.

Worth a visit

Great

Played here a few days ago on championship course, Premier not open yet after lockdown. Course in fab condition considering very dry spell. Greens well cared for and in great condition. Only slight negative some tees a bit bumpy and more sand in greens but, as new rules with no rakes etc. Have played many times over the last few years and back next week for some more. Views are amazing on a clear day and great variety of holes. Can’t go wrong plus play much speedier with two balls only.
Well done Portal.

Overrated & expensive

The course could be great but as with most courses the rough is kept to long and to many people loose balls and spend time looking for lost balls when there is no need unless it's is a pro tournament. The club house bar is very tasty and tired and the food and drink is very poor and massively expensive so most people leave after the round and go to a local pub for a drink instead of staying at the club. The restaurant and spa are very good but as this is a golf review these have little bearing on the marks
