Love this golf course, just a great design and very difficult. At 7100 yards it is a long golf course and big drives are required and accurate shots to get close to tight pins. Very challenging even for a county player!

Both my visits have been in an attempt to qualify for the Trilby tour so I suspect It was a good time to visit, however the condition of everything was delightful, even the drive into the course is quite nice. The Clubhouse is in fantastic condition and has some excellent training facilities.
The course itself is stunning with some magnificent holes. I can't think of a single hole which is similar to another which shows great thought when designed.
My favourite hole by a distance was the 10th when I played it (now the 1st). While I think its a shame that they have moved it, it does make it an incredible start to the round with a good drive needed to start, with oob left and a bunker right you need to be accurate, and longer doesn't really mean better with a huge tree in the middle of the fairway on approach a good layup will likely be required.
On top of the great design what really makes this course is the condition of the greens, In this country I am yet to play on better. True and run brilliantly.
Could not recommend this course highly enough. If I lived more locally (its about a 40 minute drive) I would be a member of this club.

Fantastic

A lovely course that is probably better than the description on their official site. Certainly a course of 2 halves with the first 9 having some serious hills both up and down before levelling out for the back 9. Some spectacular holes on the course with the 8th being the stand out for me. Amazing views all over the course too

Gem

A gem of a course. Breath taking views on the front 9 only add to the quality of the experience. Lovely undulating fairways can lead you into deep traps that test your ability to escape.
The greens are superb, as is the rest of the course.
Although still excellent, the back 9 doesn't quite live up to the front 9.
A couple of long walks between tees, but it's not a major issue.
The hotel is also fantastic & the staff & food very good.
A 'must' stay & play if in the area

Very long course for typical golfer but prepared well, and greens always seem to perform well. Some very long walks between 1?2, 8-9, 9-10 and hopefully they have decided to keep the starting hole the same for a little while longer now (it's changed a number of times in the last few years).

Our group of 16 stayed over the weekend 17-18 October 2015. The course was very good (but not exceptional), with well placed bunkers and greens rolling very well for the time of year with subtle contours. On the whole, if you are long enough off the tee to fly the traps, the course will yield opportunities. The group's consensus was that the course just lacked one or two "stunning" holes - although there was water around, it was never really in play, and the par 3s are underwhelming. The 18th was unspectacular as a finishing hole, a relatively straightforward short Par 4.

You can't rush to the tee - there is a 5 min walk from the practice green to the first tee. The walk between the 9th and 10th is also long, up through the carkpark, and then you have to cross the A34 between the 10th and 11th, and then back between the 17th and 18th. All in all, a lot of distance between greens and next tees. It was a long walk, and hard work carrying. Both rounds were slow, taking around 5hrs.

The hotel was pretty basic - a lovely old house, but our group was put in an annex, with single beds where you could feel every spring and bathrooms heated like saunas. No one got a good night's sleep. Food was very good, but service indifferent - there was a large event taking place on the Saturday night and certain members of staff made it very clear that we were something of an inconvenience for them. I would say they are not well set up for large groups.

In sum, the golf was enjoyable, but there are nicer courses and much better value out there for a 1 Night/2 rounds BBD @ £145pp.

What an excellent golf course. Proper Championship Standard. Superb greens and long rough making it though if your off line but rewarding for good shots. Beautiful settings. Friendly staff. Highly recommend

Testing course which is long and tight. Very enjoyable but can hurt you if you are not straight off the tee. No easy holes as far as I am concerned - well placed bunkers abound and also a liberal sprinkling of water on many holes. Challenging but fair and worth a go - or maybe two! Great clubhouse with friendly staff and decent food.

One of the best courses around the newbury / reading / basingstoke area. Long course with long walks and often good deals around for 4 balls etc..

Good challenge with high SS rating and nice friendly pro shop / club house. A little small in the bar area and not too many good value meals around in the bar.

Always worth playing :-)
