Just played Blakes (23/06/2012)...well, probably the worst condition of a golf course that I have ever played. This course really has just been left to the wilderness. There is no definition of the fairways, which are coverered in weeds. The Tee boxes need cutting, bunkers have very little sand and the greens really slow. No pro shop, just a few bits behind the bar. At £22.50 I am sure that there are far far better courses to play...Dont bother going to Blakes!!

Brilliant greens, reward greenkeeper. Fairways non-existant, clumps of grass all over supposed fairways. Haven't seen a mower in ages. Buggy paths unkept and severely dangerous. Buggies also prone to breakdown and not fully charged. Pro-shop a joke. But brilliant greens.

Good Friday = Bad Friday.

1)Overcrowded
After booking a tee time of 11.44 on Good friday for a 3 ball we teed off late over 20 minutes late due to the total overloading of the course by the management. Times were 8 minutes apart however we told to allow a 2 ball who had already played the back 9 (due to overcrowding even earlier in the day) so there were 4 groups waiting on the 1st tee when we started. For the first 9 holes we always had to wait to tee off, often with another group waiting on the tee with us. Yes it was a bank holiday and the weather was amazing but there's no excuse for mismanaging the tee bookings and then not trying to control the flow of traffic. During our time waiting there were was than one opportunity to start on the 10th tee instead and reduce some of the congestion.
Once on the 10th we were told to speed up, however the "ranger" had failed to notice that the 2 ball in front of us, who were playing front 9 last had left the course, leaving a gap between us and the group and in front who we caught up with within 2 holes!

2) The course
Blakes is an undulating course and leaves a few blind drives (marked with black/white stakes) but there was often little guide as the location of the flag or the fairway (there was little distinction between the fairway and rough). The tee marker really needs a simple diagram of the hole to give you some confidence. Fairways were weedy, tufty and hard to pick out from the tee. As mentioned in other reviews the greens were fair and quite pacy. Bunkers were very stony and filled with cheap sand that was a nasty brown colour and the wooden sleepers looked bizarre. The only came into play once when a playing partner hit a shot short of the green which bounced of the wood into the centre of the fairway!

It did feel like the course had been turned around and there were 2 very long walks from green to tee on the back 9, only navigable as we had seen where the 2 ball in front had gone once they had left the green!

For £20 with a breakfast on a bank holiday (it was an offer) it was the cheapest in the area and fairly reasonable, but with all the overcrowding and poorly informed ranger staff it made the day long and unpleasurable. I shant be going back unless I hear the the fairways have been seriously improved.

Found the course to be patchy with varying fairways and tee's, this was not a championship course experience. Was behind a very slow 4 ball who had no intention of letting anyone through resulting in average of 5 min wait on each Tee and for most other shots. Even two very good young players in a competition were made to wait. Turns out it was the owner and his mates, whate does that say about this clubs attitude towards its visitors?

found the course not good at all. It was GBP25 for the round and GBP25 for the buggy which I consider to be a lot. The tees were patchy, fairways patchy, rough patchy, greens patchy and some of the bunkers were poor. Did not look as if the course is looked after and is proberly the worst course ive played. club house and restaurant is nice and food is nice. the driving range is ok. but championship course, not for me. but to be fare im not the greatest lover of links course.

Long time since last visit

Basically it's a big field. They are trying to improve it by putting in new bunkers which obviously costs a lot of money but they also need to plant more gorse to make it a proper golf course.Cost is ?15 on weekdays and I think that tells you a lot

Good course to practice

First time to play the course was very quiet, good value tee off 3:30 midweek and was only £10 for 18 holes. The greens are poor and the bunkers have very little sand but is a good course to go and try out some different shots to improve your game.
