What the club says: The Blakes Championship course, designed by renowned course architect Howard Swan, is best described as an inland links. The layout and undulations of the course are totally unique to the area with rolling fairways and sleepered bunkers giving the feel of a traditional seaside links.

Blakes Essex Bad Greens and Unwelcoming

Blakes was a massive let down the surroundings were fine. We played in a 4 ball with a 3 and all 2's behind us. So although there were several marshals out on the course nobody thought to pair the 2's up so the course flowed better. We let the 3 and two of the 2 balls through, On the 11th we were challenged by the captain for slow play which was unfair as we were frustrated ourselves that we were being held up once we let players through, which wouldn't happen if they managed the course better. We were also unable to get breakfast as the chef came in late and when we asked about lunch the chef was on a break. I will definitely not be playing Blakes again. - Oct 6 2017

Pro shop closed when we arrived not sure why.. course played ok even after the downpour. Teed off around 15:00 finished by 19:00 to be met as we walked off the course and asked would we be long as he wanted to lock up, club house was closed when we had finished the front nine, in all we still liked the course..

Great course, however hardly any of the greens were green, and a few had many scuff lines, making putting very difficult. The cuts in the fairways need to improved too.

Not my best experience here....
A little disappointed with my most recent experience here.
First off, booked a tee time online to then be told it would link us up with another random 2 ball. Only got notified of this when booking buggy otherwise wouldn't have known until arrival. Had to then tee off an hour later than planned and wouldn't refund booking fee.
Secondly, pro shop was closed and buggies were not ready upon arrival. Lots of waiting around as one staff member tried to sort everything.
Thirdly, the 3 ball in front of us considerably slowed play (not Blakes fault, just people with no common sense at all.)
Have played the course plenty of times and usually have a great experience so will come back. Especially with their loyalty card when you get a round for free after playing just once.
With the weather how it is balls are running, and keep running. On your approach shots, I'd suggest going 2 clubs lower (and even then balls ran off the back). With the distance from drives though you can get yourself into some great positions.

Worth a visit
Enjoyed playing Blake’s, only criticism is that the greens were not in the best condition. They were still playable but quite slow due to length of grass and firm which made it difficult to stop balls on the green. I would go back and play again.

Best deal for Golfers
Great welcome from reception and bar. Buggies only £10 ? The course, off the white tees is challenging. The greens could be better, but not as bad as I have read in other reviews. No problem with the rest of the course. The elements could make a round difficult, due to the open surroundings. Once finished, Afternoon Tea, superb. Thanks for very good day for only £17 each.

Good value for money
Considering the price I would have to say its a decent course but the greens leave much to be desired. They were slow, bumpy and virtually unplayable at times.
Overall it was a good round on a decent course.

Sodden
Too wet to play, although trolleys were allowed. Should have been closed.
So much better value in the dryer months

Challenging coarse greens not great
Very nice coarse and very challenging the greens still need a bit of work as they are cut up in places but well worth the green fee

A great course for the winter months as there is a track for buggies all year round.

The course is really an inland links as there are hardly any trees to be seen.
