What it Costs to Play a Ryder Cup Golf Course

Since its humble origins back in the 1920s, the Ryder Cup has grown into one of the world's premier sporting spectacles, delivering a mesh of intense competition in a blisteringly hot atmosphere that attracts attention from a crowd far beyond traditional golf fans.

Memories of these matches are iconic, the moments indelible, and many players have been defined by their actions in this event. Staging the Ryder Cup is a major coup for venues both in Europe and the United States, with the bidding process having developed into a saga not dissimilar to the awarding of the Olympics or World Cup.

Walking in the footsteps of Ryder Cup legends is a treat for any golfer - meaning that playing one of the host courses has become a bucket list item for many akin to playing the Open Championship rota. Golfshake Ambassador Matt Holbrook has recently shared his recommendation on where to start.

We've already explained how you could play the 2025 stage at Bethpage Black on Long Island, New York, but sticking to locations on the European side of the Atlantic, we have taken a look to see how much it costs to play each of the venues dating back to 1927 and including the next destination of Adare Manor that will bring the Ryder Cup back to Ireland in 2027.

Adare Manor

Location: Adare, County Limerick, Ireland

Review Comment: "From the moment I was greeted at the front gate by Anthony, a top-hatted concierge with a very welcoming smile, I knew I was going to enjoy Adare Manor. And so it proved. A beautiful course in perfect condition, fabulous facilities and great caddies! David was mine and proved invaluable! If there is a golfing heaven, these 18 holes and clubhouse have got to be up there!"

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Location: Marco Simone, Rome, Italy

Review Comment: "Located about 35 minutes from central Rome, this course is known for its challenging layout and strong conditioning. The front nine features more water, while the back nine plays through hillier terrain with demanding greens. It has a reputation for being beautifully maintained, with recent preparations tied to hosting the 2023 Ryder Cup. Beyond the course itself, the clubhouse, pro shop, and restaurant receive consistent praise, with staff highlighted as especially welcoming and helpful, adding to the overall experience."

Le Golf National (Albatros)

Location: Guyancourt, Paris, France

Review Comment: "The Albatros course is everything you expect and more. Starting and finishing with water dominated holes. If you get chance, go as you will only listen to your mates talking about it for weeks after."

Gleneagles Hotel (PGA Centenary)

Location: Gleneagles, Perth & Kinross, Scotland

Review Comment: "The whole Gleneagles setup is simply stunning and it would have been a joy to play any of the courses. As you would expect, the PGA was immaculate and stunning, a great challenge but playable for a mid-handicapper."

Review Comment: "Don’t think I’ve ever played a course in such good condition at this time of year, it was fantastic, lush green fairways and rapid greens. This is by far the best of the three. Walton Heath Golf Club (Old)

Review Comment: "Walton Heath is world renowned and even after all the rain we have had recently it was in spectacular condition. It is a proper championship course, very tough, especially if you are not finding fairways. But if you do, you can score, depending on where they put the pins - there are some severely sloping parts of the greens. I played the Old Course, which I had previously found very difficult, but it is a course that you get to know the more you play it. Well worth playing if you get the chance."

Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club

Location: Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England

Review Comment: "The fairways and greens are in great condition and it is a very difficult course, with fast running greens. Highly recommended!"

Location: Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland

Review Comment: "I played in November 2022, on a cold but crisp day with a gentle breeze - shoulder season prices are definitely value for money. The overall experience was excellent. The course requires you to hit good golf shots at every turn - the design is a great test for your average golfers. Interesting, it's hard to pick one standout hole, as the quality is spread across the course. Off course, the clubhouse is full of interesting memorabilia, and the lunch worth the effort of a jacket and tie with views to die for out across the links."

Royal Birkdale Golf Club

Location: Southport, Merseyside, England

Review Comment: "Excellent condition. Greens very fast, bunkers galore and bunkers too numerous to count. With rough immediately off the fairway that is tough to find and play your ball. A championship course through and through - one to definitely experience. All the staff very welcoming and helpful."

Review Comment: "Challenging and enjoyable course with lots of history. Extremely friendly welcome in both the pro shop and clubhouse which served a full range of food and snacks. The course itself is long with several 400 yard+ par 4s with the course being extremely well bunkered, especially round the greens, which compounded the difficulty of the course."
