The Best Hybrids of 2019

By: Golfshake Editor | Fri 08 Mar 2019

2019 has seen many new hybrids introduced onto the market for this season, meaning that for golfers there are numerous possibilities to choose from, but which of them is most likely to benefit your game, and which specifically should interest you? We have taken a look at the releases, bringing them together into one place, sharing the key information and reviews from Golfshake’s Ryan Rastall, to deliver the Best Hybrids of 2019.

Cobra King F9 Speedback Hybrid

Cobras new hybrid features Baffler and Speedback technologies for the first time and they work in unison to optimise low CG and club-head speed. Baffler rails have been a feature on Cobra’s previous fairways and hybrids, but they have been redesigned on the F9 Speedback to save discretionary weight needed lower in the club but still provide the same great turf interaction. A 15g tungsten weight is positioned in the back of the club to promote a higher ball flight providing much more control when hitting into greens. The head is also 10% larger than the previous F8 model creating a higher MOI and increasing forgiveness. The F9 Speedback hybrid is also available in the One Length version setting up with the same length and lie of a 7-iron and both models feature Cobra Connect.

Callaway Apex Hybrid

The Apex hybrid is more of an iron style hybrid and is designed to act as a driving iron and this is made obvious by the long, sleek profile of the head. For the first time in an Apex hybrid, Jailbreak Technology is featured and this stiffens the head placing more impact load on the face for faster ball speeds and increased distance. The forged face is a cup design made from a Carpenter 455 steel and creates a larger sweet spot increasing ball speed in every impact location. There is a 6g weight on the sole of the club keeping the CG low in the head for easier launch. Callaway have finished the Apex hybrid with dark PVC finish.

Callaway Big Bertha Hybrid

Callaway’s new Big Bertha hybrids now feature Jailbreak Technology for the first time. Jailbreak gives golfers faster ball speeds and increased distance from two bars that stiffen the body to place more impact load on the face. Also new on the Big Bertha hybrid is the face which now made from an ultra-thin Carpenter 455 steel. This combined with a new Hyper Speed Face Cup promotes speed across the face and increased distance from all impact locations. A new lighter Optifit Hosel has been added to combine Jailbreak Technology and adjustability for the first time in a hybrid. The new hosel is lighter and the weight that has been saved has been repositioned to optimise the Centre of Gravity for easy launch and higher ball flights. The Big Bertha hybrid also features a progressive head shape that’s very forgiving and full of MOI technology.

Ping G410 Crossover

Ping's new Crossover is still designed to be a club that gives the forgiveness of a hybrid but the look and feel of a long iron. The face in the G410 is made from a C300 maraging steel creating faster ball speeds and a 30g tungsten weight has been added in the toe to increase the MOI over the G400 model. The club-head is also smaller than the previous model to make it look more like an iron. It's shorter from heel to toe and the sole is narrower to increase shot making ability. There is also an Internal Rib Structure design behind the face producing a more powerful sound and better feel. The G410 Crossover has a hydro pearl chrome finish that reduces friction with the turf improving launch and spin from rough and wet grass.

Left Hand Lofts - 17°, 20°, 23°

Ping G410 Hybrid

The new Ping G410 hybrid is adjustable, and this is a first from Ping with a hybrid. Trajectory Tuning 2.0 is a lightweight aerodynamic hosel sleeve that allows adjustment in loft from +/-1.5° and up to 3° flatter in lie angle allowing golfers to customise ball-flight characteristics to their liking. It also has a larger profile head which provides added stability and increases the MOI by 6.5%. A high-density tungsten back weight has been introduced creating extreme perimeter weighting to maximise the forgiveness of the larger head. A maraging steel face has been attached to the head and because the material allows it to be as thin and flexible as possible, ball speed has been increased resulting in added distance. The face is textured to reduce spin, and the painted grooves help frame the ball at address.

TaylorMade M6 Hybrid

The main taking point with the new TaylorMade M6 hybrid is the introduction of Twist Face Technology. As seen in the M5 and M6 drivers, Twist Face is designed to reduce side spin and deliver straighter shots on off-centre hits. The M6 hybrid also features a thin, fast face for increased ball speeds and distance along with stepped crown for easy alignment and a lower centre of gravity for easier launch and improved forgiveness. The Speed Pocket has also been redesigned, the new TPU slot insert now sits flush with the ground improving turf interaction and has also been made more flexible for a larger COR and improved performance on off centre strikes, especially low in the face.

TaylorMade GAPR Hybrid

TaylorMade’s GAPR range is designed to help golfers bridge the gap between their longest playable iron and highest lofted fairway wood. There are three heads in the range, HI, MID and LOW and all are made from a 455 Stainless steel that is hollow and injected with SpeedFoam to help increase ball speed and feel. All models feature a Loft Sleeve that allow the loft to be adjusted +/- 1.5° enabling golfers to fine tune ball flight characteristics. Speed Pocket technology is also fitted in each GAPR model improving launch conditions for enhanced distance, forgiveness, and playability on low-face strikes.

GAPR LO has the smallest head in the range and a low-forward CG to produce the lowest and most penetrating trajectory. GAPR MID has a low CG for a mid-high trajectory and GAPR HI has the largest head and a low-back CG producing the highest trajectory of the three.

Designed with input from their tour players Wilson have given the new D7 hybrid a new Carpenter Custom 455 face. A premium maraging steel insert gives a thin, fast face improving ball speeds and distance. A new crown has also been added and thin cast pockets provide strength while reducing weight.

PXG 0317 X Gen 2 Hybrid

The PXG 0317X Gen 2 hybrid is a classic looking hybrid with the main focus in the design being forgiveness. Featuring Hot Rod Technology inspired by the look and performance of American muscle cars, the 0317X has a carbon fibre crown and weight forward design increasing ball speed, distance and accuracy. Eight weights on the sole can be adjusted and moved about enabling golfers to dial in ball flight characteristics exactly how they want them and a adjustable hosel works along-side this allowing loft change from (+/-) 1½ degrees. A honeycomb TPC insert is also fitted to the 0317X helping to enhance the club's sound and feel.

Titleist 818 H1 & H2 Hybrid

The 818 hybrids from Titleist offer a new level of hybrid adjustability as they have been specifically engineered for maximum custom fitting adjustability in two distinct profiles. The SureFit Hosel provides 16 independent loft and lie settings to optimise consistent centre-faced contact, complimented by the shot-shaping accuracy of SureFit CG.

The hybrids also have a 10% average increase in MOI from its predecessor, offering more forgiveness and stability through an optimally positioned, deep CG. Finally, the Active Recoil Channel 2.0 generates faster ball speeds through its improved channel and flexing polymer insert, producing a significant advantage in carry distance.

The 818 H1 is best suited to golfers with a sweeping delivery and prefer the look of a fairway metal. The 818 H2 is best suited to golfers with a steeper delivery to the ball and prefer the look of an iron.
