Lovely course, reasonable hotel

I don't often leave reviews but hopefully I can say something helpful about Heythrop.

Firstly, the setting is fantastic. If you like golf to be quiet and away from main roads, then it definitely ticks that box. However, as others have noted, it is very expansive, and a long walk. We played a round behind some older golfers, and it took 5:20 (yes, five hours and twenty minutes).

The review before this one mentioned the condition of the course - I don't know what it would have been like in April but I know that lots of courses have been struggling, perhaps as a knock-on effect of lockdowns. All I can say is that of the 5-6 courses I have played this year, Heythrop was in by far the best condition.

As for the holes themselves, we thought they were almost all fantastic. Nearly all of them give you some kind of visual challenge or interest from the tee box. Others have mentioned the 18th, which is an arrow-straight par 5 up to the mansion, and visually unlike any other hole I have seen, but there are many others, not all of them straightforward.

The hotel feels a little odd. We all commented on this and later found out that it used to be a Jesuit education college (!), which perhaps explains the feeling of the place, as well as the small size of the rooms. The food was reasonably good, although I would avoid the steak, which was of poor quality and poorly cooked (although this is clearly very easily remedied!). I should add that the package we booked gave us a very generous food allowance of £32.50 per person per day. The odd feeling was exacerbated by the difficulties they are clearly having with staffing at present. The "pro shop" closed at 5:30 every day. On our arrival day, we wanted a drink and some food at 10:30, to be told that none of the bars or restaurants were open, having closed at 10, and would only re-open at 11. Hopefully this is also something that they will be able to remedy in the future, too.

Good course - great scenery.

An interesting course with a deceptively easy start both physically and golf-wise . As the course progresses it becomes significantly more undulating with longer walks green -tee and the course toughens to ease off again at the end with a very long but flat and straight 18th hole with a superb view of the mansion. Torrential rain beforehand meant some muddy trails off piste.

Lovely golf course, some tricky holes but also a chance to score points. Nice and quiet for a Saturday morning and played at a good pace.

A hidden Gem

Had a great time playing is amazing scenery, a beautiful course that's as nice as any I've played on. The only thing that let it down was the quality of the greens and bunkers.

played on saturday morning thinking we would be rushing round in peak time but found it well paced.

the opening 4 holes are quite staight forward but still challenging due to the good undulating greens and tightly mown fairways. i thought the fairways were heathlike and proved more like a links course where you have to chip and run the ball to the correct part of the green. iron play had to be accurate and wedges particularly so. good run on the fairways despite the rain we have been experiencing. approach shots to the pin had to be good. puts were true.

stand out holes for me 5,6,9,11.

downside is the distance between holes on some. buggies would be good for anyone not in the fittest condition!

overall, i cant wait to go back and play better than i did the first time.

We were lucky to play on probably the only sunny day so far this year and were expecting to be knee deep in water / mud due to the storms we have had over the last month or so. All I can say is the groundstaff need to be awarded medals! The natural drainage helps to get water off the course but the condition was something I would expect during the early summer. The greens were slower than exptected but they were true and in great condition. Having now played the course 4 times, we have never been disappointed and the layout, apart from being rather long between some green's and tee's, is interesting at every turn with a number of the holes, especially the 6th, being up there with the best. Can't wait to return.

I have now played this course several times as I have a membership at one of the local clubs. After seeing the course develop and talking to the staff about the future plans. I'm now keen to take up my membership at Heythrop Park. In terms of what is on offer here compared to the normal members club in the area, there is no choice, Heythrop! The membership fee is certainly affordable at £999 and with the deal of 1 extra month, for me its a great deal to play one of the best golf courses in the South. Dont wait too long as I understand the price will be going back up once they get up to 300 members. Currently they are at around the 140 mark, which is a lot better than this time last year as I think the figure was around 30!! The management must be doing something right!!

Great greens

Well maintained course with very interesting and different holes. The greens were really quick and after two rounds with no putts holed over 6 feet, my playing partner and I were not surprised to learn the course had recently hosted a championship tournament. I could believe the slope was 122 but then I'm not that good! Friendly, good facilities, will revisit.

Played the front nine in wintry conditions course playable. Need more signage on the course. Staff very helpful and friendly, golf shop and area soon to get an upgrade which they need, long walk to the hotel for drinks afterwards and at hotel prices. Would like to play in the better weather but would need a buggy.

Challenging and quirky

It's a lovely course in the beautiful Cotswold countryside. The greens were well kept and were a lot faster than what we are used to (that's our excuse anyway!), with lots of slopes and borrows etc. We played after heavy rain the day before so were unsurprised to see areas of standing water here and there- none on the greens, but several on approaches etc. There were a few holes that I have no doubt we would play better with a second round here, hence the quirky in the title.

Unbelievable Greens

Played 2 rounds at Heythrop park last weekend in testing conditions. As many other courses were closed due to the weather. Heythrop remained open and was in great condition all round except for a handful of spots that was soft. Greens were unbelievably in great condition. Hardly any pitch parks at all and were running very fast even in the rain to my dismay. Looking forward to playing this gem on a sunny day in 2024

Great Potential, but let down by course design

Clearly confined by the original park layout and converting it into a golf course, the design of many of the longer holes is perplexing and in some cases just poorly thought out. Together with the winding paths between tees its makes for an incredibly challenging course to walk (seemingly everyone has a buggy because of this). The grounds of the manor house are impressive and provide scenic views, just a shame the course itself couldn't live up to them.
