Overhyped
Clubhouse and facilities much smaller and less inspiring than anticipated. Jacket and tie requirement after 11am is a little pretentious for such a venue. Course was immaculate and greens very good but overall it lacks great golf holes. Bucket list course but there are much better courses and venues. Not a patch on Turnberry for exampleReviewer Rating

Hugely Enjoyable
Only managed to get 9 holes played the previous week due to horrendous weather. Good to experience a true links course at its worst (weather). The club were kind enough to allow us to re-book and the conditions couldn't have been more different. Bright sunshine/no wind and a true pleasure to play the course. On both occasions found the staff to be most welcoming and friendly. Superb.(Round played: Jun 2017 - Score: 98 Handicap: )

Pro shop and caddymaster very friendly and helpful. Everything in the clubhouse is very traditional - In this respect RSG doesn't do modern so probably best not to expect it to avoid disappointment. There are plenty of good places in Sandwich for food and drink if you forget your collar and tie anyway.
Excellent day out and worth paying to do at least once in a lifetime! Or twice...

The biggest most cragged dunes of any Course on the Open rota, leading to many blind tee shots, and if it's a little wet underfoot you will get severe sloppy lies even from good tee shots. Many of the pros dislike it as they see it as unfair and unrewarding of their perfect strikes. But for everyone else who is less good than scratch, I argue that the large verging on enormous greens and bunkers mostly set a few yards back from the putting surface make St Georges the most fun to play of any British Links. The pros would take Birkdale all day long, but most amateurs will tire of the bunkers left and right off every tee shot and small greens always running off into the pots. By contrast, St Georges is far more forgiving, and in many places very flattering. Yes the clubhouse rules are stuck in the past, Lytham and Liverpool for example are virtually fully open to the visitor who can spend ages soaking up the history on display, St Georges is a little more.... Self important. But you know, that's ok. The George even seems to have a machine to keep the rough penal but sufficiently thinned out to make losing balls a rarity the times I've played it. If I had to play just one course the rest of my life - maybe this one. Magnificent.

And yet none of this matters at all. This is not the course for the bar room bore who can only talk about his backswing, or the yellow neophyte with little historical interest in the game. This is the course which must have had as many memorable Open moments over it’s 14 incarnations, as any other. This is the course for those that know of Bradshaws’ bottle and Duncans’ hollow. Langers OB or the Sands of Bjorn. Couples’ footle into the burn, Normans or Cottons imperious rampages to the title of Champion golfer. We don’t complain of the nouveaux baroque columns at Buckingham Palace, or the pompadoured rococo stylistic exercise that is Tower Bridge. If you complain about Royal St Georges shortcomings, you are simply seeing the game as would a soulless, detached automaton.
