The good about the course? Most holes are exceptional in terms of how they are laid out, there is a lot of challenge on every hole. It\'s a thinking mans course, Driver on every par 4 and 5 just won\'t cut it here. I genuinely think the layout of this course is exceptional and could compare to Glengeagles if a bit shorter in length. In particular, I enjoyed playing the 7th, 14th and 15th, whilst the 18th is a great par 5 finishing hole.\\The bad? The conditions of the course (bar the greens, which are of a good standard) are very poor. There are a lot of muddy ruts even in the middle of fairways, the fairway grass isn\'t cut as it should be and the bunkers are very often flooded. The 12th (par 4) is a bit of a joke if I\'m honest...I played a 9 iron (130ish yards) for my tee shot as the fairway is at a 90 degree angle to the tee...I then had to play an 8 iron to an incredibly small green with no run off at all, and to top it all off, after a great drive into the fairway, I had a tree in my way!\\Overall? I\'d give it a 6/10. It\'s a shame the conditions of the course is so poor, if someone came in and spent a bit of money to improve it\'s condition it would be a VERY worthy championship layout (perhaps with the exception of lengthening a few holes and changing that 12th hole). Good for beginners or high handicappers, if you want play a course with good condition it\'s best to look elsewhere.

We played Westerwood golf course this weekend as a 4-ball on a cold, but relatively sunny and dry day. Parking at the club was no problem and we were greeted by a friendly enough gentleman in a spacious and well stocked pro shop.

The practise facilities included a chipping and putting green, short practise area and driving net - enough to allow a little warm up before heading out to victory.

As we played our round, the drainage issues mentioned by several of the previous reviews were all too apparent. Although not swamp like conditions, there were several sections of the course which had been dug up and left, so accurate golfing was essential. Many of the walkways between holes were is such bad condition, it was best to walk on the soggy grass or face a call to claims direct for a broken ankle.

The 17th hole was marked on the scorecard as a 300 odd yard par 4 hole, however, the hole had actually been changed to 160yard par 3 due to severe drainage issues and reconstruction of the fairway. Large sections of the 18th fairway were under repair and simply unplayable, a common issue on several other areas of the course, such as bunkers.

The greens were a good size and of relative difficulty, especially tricky when frozen putting up and down slopes. Fortunately for any other golfers who decide to play this course, you won't find a Murray Galloway (opponent) telling you you're going to miss your putt as you are striking the ball. On already semi-challenging greens, this unsportsmanlike behaviour we've become accustomed to was not appreciated!
Although the course was in rather poor condition, like true professionals, my playing partner and I never gave up and after taking the lead on the 16th, strolled to an easy and memorable victory.

I would struggle to say that Westerwood golf course worth the £17.50 you would be charged for a round, not in it's current state anyway. Perhaps £12-£14 would be more appropriate, at least until the major issues are corrected. Although there are some positives (nice staff and facilitates), I feel that the negatives (poor course maintenance and paths between holes) make this a poor alternative for other similarly priced courses.

We had a good day out golfing at Westerwood, however, I think that was mainly down to the fact we each had a free voucher, the weather was nice and we won.

My advice - wait until the summer to give this course a go!

Having read all the reviews before going out I'm afraid to say that a lot of them were true, this is a very wet and boggy course and a lot of it will be down to the wet weather we have had. There are some lovely holes on the course and my favorite was the Par 3 15th, on the other hand the 17th should be a par 4 but I spent 10 minutes trying to work out where the actual tee was, then found out it had turned into a par 3 of 100 yards and tee was way up the under repair fairway -might have helped to be told this. The benefit was I played on a free voucher so it didn't cost me anything for the pleasure.

Unfortunately the fairways were largely unplayable due to heavy water-logging and puddles. Massive areas of fairways in the back nine were GUR and unplayable. The 18th hole had been halved due to the first section being GUR. Greens were heavy, but given the rest of the course they were actually OK.

You can see that the course has been well designed but it's unbelievably wet in a number of places. Some very nice demanding holes throughout and would also benefit from a scorecard that showed ponds!

Not impressed at all by the course, glad I had vouchers for it, it was like a bog and I have never left a golf course so dirty. Good pair of shoes almost ruined. Wouldn't rush back or recommend it.

Went to Westerwood yeserday as part of a deal, lunch and a round for £20.

Lunch was ok, but the game was very much a disapointment. It had been raining and the course was very, very wet.

It was also extremely slow going, took 5 hours to get to the 16th at which time we had to walk in due to poor light.

Westerwood felt like it was a municipal course. The guys in front of us showed no etiquet and were drinking cans off beer while they were walking round. The whole atmosphere of the place was decidely low class.

I wouldn't go back.

I played Westerwood with a the free voucher that I received at the Scottish Golf Show so had to give this course top marks for value. Sadly our game was tarnished from the very start as when we arrived we were told that the 2 buggies that we had booked were not available, no reason given by the incredibly rude member of staff(male) that we spoke to. The course itself was fairly good with some interesting holes and a couple of very nice par 3's. However and it is a big HOWEVER, the 12th hole at this course is hands down the worst golf hole I have ever had the misfortune to play(even for free). Its a total nonentity, why they didn't make it a par 3 and just do away with the pathetic fairway is totally beyond me. The highlight of my round was the par 3 16th a stunning looking downhill par 3. I have a second free voucher for Westerwood but if I go back I will be skipping the 12th hole it is so poor.

12th Hole should be rethought, very poor - "Preferred lies on the fairway" - there is no fairway worthy of the description. Back to the drawing board please!

This could be a great course . Fact is , it is in poor condition. Even in 27 degrees , it has poor drainage .
Green are awful , beyond slow and simply scruffy.
Fairways too long and rough beyond penal .
Simply a shame , Seve as named designer must be turning in his grave .
Simply a waste of what could be a golf course .

Improving!

Greens and course are improving after a few years of not being as good as it could have been. Players need to have more respect for the course and replace divots etc.

Be prepared for a long walk.

The course was very wet when I played it and was almost under water in parts. Despite these conditions, I enjoyed the game as the course is challenging and fairly well kept. The greens I felt were slow but this might have been due to the weather conditions on the day. It is quite a tiring course to play as there are several holes where there are very long walks from the green to the next tee.
