What the club says: Set against a beautiful backdrop, a round of golf at the The Welcombe Golf Club is a wonderful experience. Our par 70 course, complete with sparkling lakes and rolling countryside, provides a thrilling challenge to the experts and an exhilarating introduction for novices.
It's a unique course, stretching over 6178 yard, with three par five holes and five par threes. What's more, in 1998 we were proud to host the prestigious European Seniors Tour Ryder Event. And now you can tread the same fairways as those great old pros.

Unforgiving hill side course with tricky fast greens
The course is located on a hillside just outside Stratford Upon Avon, Warwickshire, with some providing panoramic views of the county. Mainly well spaced out holes some requiring a plan to navigate rather than hit and hope. We played three days in a row as a society of 12 with handicaps from 12 to 31 but each day only two players achieved 30 or more points. On arrival the range dispenser ran out of balls just after 11:00 am so we could not warm up. The next day we found the majority of balls were Matt indicating considerable use. My bucket of 30 included two badly cracked and one severely chipped ball.
The course has numerous blind tee shots which in this dry weather meant any shot could bounce down hill and end up in thick rough making for slow play.
The bunkers are mainly grey grit which is severely compacted making sand splash shots impossible it was more a case of trying to chip of concrete. Some bunkers have weeds but on the day we left these were being hoed.
There is a lot of walking between holes with paths covered by matting which in places is folded, ripped and worn in to holes presenting trip hazard.
The pin positions on 10 and 16 were practically impossible, well putted balls racing into bunkers or in the case of the two tier 16 further back than when you started.
Arriving to see the ball dispenser hut roofing felt missing and torn does not give a good impression. A lot of tees have bare patches with new seed applied. Given the state of the bunkers and range balls we were left with the impression that the venue was tired and need investment.
Watch out for unpleasant members, getting out of my car an irate senior demanded to know why I had parked next to him (only shady bay!) then inferred that I was an inconsiderate Parker who didn't care about putting dinks in adjacent vehicles. My car was correctly parked my drivers door on first fix position leaving ample space from him. In 32 years as a golf club member I never been greeted in such an unpleasant way.

Tricky greens
Due to the dry spring the fairways and greens were very dry which meant long drives if you were straight. However , Lots of 3 puts on the greens!Reviewer Rating

very poor practice balls/matts, no tokens available for second day.2 five hour plus rounds.Poor tees and greens.Fencing around the clubhouse falling down , gate hanging off its hinges. No soap in the toilets both days. When we left a painter was filling over cracks in a leaking ceiling in the bar ,a good metaphor for the venue regarding painting over the cracks without addressing the issues. We have played the Welcombe many times over the years but will not be returning, its a venue in decline.Reviewer Rating

Nice venue
Third time we've played Welcombe and still enjoying the course very much. Weather was not great but course was in decent shape although pace of play was dreadful. Waited on every tee box and took five and a half hours for the round. I got a free upgrade to the Countess Suite which was brilliantDinner and breakfast was good too

The rain held off
A round of ups and downs and missed opportunities. Solid putting but several putts that should have been singles. Driving much improved but more work still on the the approach shots.Course in good condition, beautiful horse chestnut trees in bloom.

Personally I love it - lower handicappers might find it a bit easy
First two holes are an 'easy' intro to the course. Every other hole has some 'point of interest' - water, gully, choke point, vista etc. Fairways are generally wide so better players might not be too challenged. Some players might be a bit frustrated with a number of blind holes - teeing off over a hill to a downward sweeping fairway.Aside from the golf - a good workout as it's quite hilly.

Xmas work society
Not the longest of courses, but as we all know it doesn't have to be long to make it enjoyable or taxing. My first time playing here and I can say I enjoyed it. The lower holes near the road were a bit saturated from recent rain (carry only) but otherwise the fairways were pretty dry. I think the course in summer would play short, I?ll have to try it out then.Reviewer Rating

Solid course, inconsistent greens
Nice course, but hilly and have to cross road a couple of times which isn't ideal but. It's fun to play and challenging enough to make it interesting. My only gripe is the greens were inconsistent. Some fast some slow. Recent bad weather probably didnt help that but still it was a negative. Overall though was a nice course and will play here again.Reviewer Rating

Great views and a course in good nick
A lovely course, which was a fair test. Rough was long, which punished the wayward. Was in good condition and is well designed. Some fantastic views around the course.Reviewer Rating

Good friendly service and a huge positive is the buggies which actually move at good speed, not the crawling things you get elsewhere

What a treat
Paid £20 each for a round of golf hereThe course is challenging but what I found was that every hole was a different challenge
The hardest hole, the par 5 monument, is a stinker in a good way. You need 3 good approach shots to be anywhere near and the strategically placed bunkers and trees do not help.
The easiest hole on the course 12 the poachers drop, sucks you in to go for the green in two. Beware of the bunkers surrounding the green. Once you are in!
Great course, great people
