What the club says: Tapton Golf Course is situated on the outskirts of Chesterfield Derbyshire, it is the only municipal parkland golf course in the area boasting a full 18 hole demanding golf course, a testing 9 hole golf course and an 18 hole chip and putt challenge. Tapton Golf Course is fairly hard walking with steep gradients on a few fairways.

Winter WeatherGreens frozen solid, fairways solid and loads of standing water. Wouldn’t be bad in the summer

Big improvement
I submitted a review in June, and commented on the abysmal condition of the greens. Played today (Nov 8) for the first time since and am happy to report that the greens are way better. A new head greenkeeper has been employed and in the space of 6 weeks the greens have improved vastly. This bodes well for the future and means that hopefully, by next season Tapton will fulfil it's undoubted potential. More of the same please 'Link Golf'.Reviewer Rating

Great setting, but now in poor condition.
What a shame. This is where I learned to love golf, but the condition now is such a disappointment. Very poor greens, below average tee boxes, worm casts everywhere and average, at best, fairways. The clubhouse and driving range was buzzing, but the course looks like it's in a race to the bottom, not striving for the top.

Abysmal Course
Greens are Tapton Park are more like the Derbyshire Hills, full of lumps, bumps, patchy coverage, uneven surfaces, different types of grasses - generally horrendous greens!Fairways were ok, ground conditions were very wet.
Since the new owners (Link Golf) have been in, the course quality has significantly worsened, more bothered about money in the tills rather than a decent course.

Played the course today 3rd Sept 2025 and was very disappointed in its condition. I used to play a few years ago and it has deteriorated consierably. The tee boxes were uneven and bare and the greens had large bare patches I presume the management of the course over this summers dry weather has been insufficient. Not playing here until it improves to a level of other local coursesReviewer Rating

So dissapointing £27 to play, greens are very poor, tee boxes not in the best condition, all that investment into the range and bar area, have to get the basics right, no return for our group until it gets betterReviewer Rating

Mega disappointment the entire experience was shocking.Tee boxes were grassless, uneven and very poor.
Fairways been cut way too short and the hot weather has browned them all.
Greens not the operative name for these full off hollow core holes bare in many places and show zero signs of proper care.
All this for a diabolical £27 pound and because of my disability a further £25 for Buggy all in all a very expensive day for this pensioner

Lovely layout but .........
Cracking layout of the course but the greens are in a world of bother. A real shame considering this time last year we struggled with rain. Patches. Bare and severely compromised. Not a great deal of sand in the bunkers. A lot of stones though. Fairways look great and the tree removal have made the course look lovely. Lost my bank cards but not allowed to pay cash. No exceptions. Covids over get over yourselfReviewer Rating

Greens need to be better
I understand and accept that greens need aerating at certain times of the year. I do think courses should offer a discount during these periods. However, the holes created on all the greens were absolutely savage. Looked like they'd pushed into the grass with a blunt instrument. Absolutely no ability to read the greens.
I like Tapton - it's always a course I've enjoyed playing. The winter tee boxes could have been a bit better, and these significantly shortened the course, but I've dealt with worse.

Tapton Park Review
Round played November 2024. The club has recently been taken over and lots of investment made into its facilities. A lot of online advertising has been made promoting the improvements and this was the reason I was eager to visit. I was extremely disappointed to see the state of the golf course. Fairways and greens were very patchy (and bare) and some of the greens full of disease. The issue the club now have is the greens will not recover whilst they continue to be played on! The bunkers were the same scruffy bunkers they have always been. The tees are in desperate need of improvement. The whole course still requires a lot of work. It seems the main investment has been in improving the driving range facilities and installing a new cafe / clubhouse. The old clubhouse is now closed and the main focus is the new driving range, cafe and play room. What an absolute waste, Tapton Park is a golf club, not a youth club or play centre!Reviewer Rating

Typical Tapton - New owners, no difference
First time to visit the new ‘clubhouse’, personally its feels very small and quite soulless, the café style works well for the driving range, but as a golf clubhouse its just not big enough. There’s no association or links to ‘Tapton Park Golf Club’, all the medal boards/ trophy boards and actual trophies are in the old clubhouse.
Personally, feels like Link Golf do not want Tapton Park Golf Club involved anymore.
The course in December’24, tee boxes are just mud strips now and will need some serious care to bring to them back to life.
The fairways are very muddy and full of divots, but as the course is open all year around, it certainly will be.
The greens are horrendous, full of divots, bumps, tyre tracks, disease all over the greens, some serious attention will be needed to bring into shape for the summer season.
Pace of play, was typically Tapton… one hour for 7 holes (very good), then for the remaining holes were I was stuck behind a group of four, who did not let me through for 11 holes – very frustrating and didn’t see any marshall either (waiting on every shot).
Presumably, Link Golf are only bothered about money in the tills and not the overall golf experience.
How are Link Golf going to address:
1) Pace of play
2) Repairing of fairway divots
3) Repairing of divots on the greens
4) Repairing disease on the greens

An Old Flame
First time I've played under the new ownership (Link Golf), some firm and definite plans in place to change the look and feel of the course and facilities. New trackman driving range will be a huge hit in the local area. On the Markham course, fairways and first cut generally ok, with clear differences between them.Bunkers - all need raking (1st last night just flat), with clear crisp edges to the bunkers (currently they look a touch over grown).
Greens - appear rough, patchy grass in places, looks like some disease in places, generally need more love and care on them, fairly slow in comparison to Stanedge greens.
Overall, with some love, care and attention in the right places, Tapton will be back up to the correct standard.

Really friendly staff
Phoned and booked a buggy but the course never got this but the staff bent over backwards to get us out on course. Fantastic quality for the fee payed. The chap who served us was behind us, told him we were stuck behind a group of younguns who didn't really know the etiquette as they were obviously just starting out and we let him through to have a word and explain. Just a shame the group who went back round the 4th couldn't be more understanding by firing the ball at us whilst we were waiting for the group of lads infront.Reviewer Rating
