A tale of two halves

Sherdley Park is a great municipal with two very different nines. The course is actually laid out as a ten hole stretch, then 11 and 12 are a bit of a walk back past the first tee with the last six holes over the road past the clubhouse.

The front 9 is very tricky as the par 37 suggests. The back 9 is very short but still full of interesting holes. It does get frequented by people that only play once a year. The four ball in front of us all sliced 50 yards into the trees but never once looked back to consider letting us play through even with a large gap in front. We ended up starting on 11 instead. They were in the rough on the tenth when we saw them again three hours later.

All in all a cracking course but allow 5-6 hours on a sunny Saturday.

Played here quite a few times over the late summer months. It's a very well maintained course for a muni and the greens and fairways are consistently good. The bunkers have improved as the year has gone on. The course doesn't have much in the way of facilities but there is a driving range a short drive away (less than a mile) if you need to warm up. There's also one hitting net and a pretty ropey putting green. A basic club shop and a clubhouse of sorts completes the set up

The course itself is a decent challenge, especially the front 9, with the 6th being a particularly troublesome hole. The back 9 is classic risk and reward with several driveable par 4s

There's not much in the way of signage but it's a straightforward layout for the most part. The 4th hole tee box is back on yourself through a gap in the trees after you've putted out on the 3rd. To find the 11th & 12th holes it's back past the first tee and then up the hill in front of you. The remaining 6 holes are past the club shop and over the road

It can get busy at times and does attract all levels of golfer so be prepared to encounter hackers

There always seems to be buggies available but I don't often see people using them when I play, probably because they are a relatively recent addition (last couple of years maybe?)

Overall it's good value for money as the course is very good with the facilities in need of a little improvement. Some great promo deals available too at certain times

Improving!!

The improvements to the course since the takeover are pretty impressive. The course as a whole look's good. Fairways nicely cut, tee boxes are fine, bunkers have new sand and are regularly raked. The greens are a work in progress, but are much better. They are just very slow. As I understand it, there are big plans for the club house, with a roof top bar/restaurant which will look over the 18th. Trees are to be reduced course wide, and restructuring of a couple of green's. If this progress continues, I'll defiantly be considering membership after the winter. Credit to the owners and the greenkeepers.

A good course with a testing front nine and a chance to score well on the way in. The greens are in good nick but the bunkers look like someone has stolen all the sand and left a few rocks in each.

Poor fairways, greens not cut, slow players due to it being a municipal.

played this for the first time on full greens yesterday with a couple of my mate who have never played it so expectation was high and so was the scoring so we thought...
well the weather was a mixed bag but the course was very good condition, some realy good holes on the front 9 but the back 9 is as some one else has said easier. nice to com in after the front being a little hilly (not the massive hills like some others local but slopes are wicked) some very tasty par 3's you can realy have a go at them with a mid to low iron. the greens are great don't hold water and are nicley looked after. the fairways are well very good but like i said some do slope badly, (so be carefull were you aim as you could be of the fairways to the oppersite side if not carefull). over all very good had a great time, shame the club house shut at 17:30 we got in at 17:15 and told we could have a beer but only if we could drink it before half past (so we ordered TWO each !!!!!!!) staff was great as they served the guys who finished after us...

Quite a testing course which can be tough on the legs the front nine plays harder than the back nine which offers several birdie chances.

Great course

Great parkland course that offers a good test for all abilities. A good risk reward course that offers good birdie chances but can also throw up some double bogies if your a bit wayward. Well worth a visit.

Improvement required

Not played Sherdley for a while and although the extensive work being carried out is really starting to bear fruit the greens are really poor.
However there are reasons for this and I?m sure that they will improve pretty quickly.

Fairways were immaculate, greens awful (but the guy explained that this is obviously down to current lockdown situation and that the green keepers should have them back up to standard within a few weeks. Pity there's 3 holes currently out of action due to improvements being made and price should probably be lowered a little to reflect this. Overall though an enjoyable round of golf after such a long lay off and the course will be great once all works are finished.

The course was closed on the back 6 holes for repair, wasn?t told at the time only found out when got up to the holes and they was blocked off. Really wet and soggy in winter but a good course in summer for a round

Royal Sherdley

Played about a year ago and the course was in poor condition(didn't think they'd save the greens, but they've done a great job).Played 21st August and the course was much much better, they have loads of plans for the future here.Have joined on a pay and play basis £50 +£12.50 golf union fees if you want to retain a current handicap to play in the comps.(Saturdays at the moment)and Senior midweek comp too.Looking forward to a bright future and making new friends.Had Fish and chips when I finished,Fish is Amazing!!Will become a full member if the course improves more and the investments on the course are made.

Played Wednesday 14th August and enjoyed it. As a visitor here’s a few comments to take on board.
1. Golf shop was very cold feeling, I mean not welcoming at all. Very industrial feel to it and it was asking you to leave as soon as you walked in. Not much on offer regarding clothing etc and I’m one of those golfers who buy t shirts at every course I play.
2. Played holes 1-6 then when you come off the 6th green where the hell do you go !!! No signage at all and wasted time walking all the way round to 7th tee...
3. I’ve read the other comments and see the course layout has been changed. and the last few holes I think could be better. I’d rather walk with clubs down a hill than up. The current 15th should be your 17th then your right at the 18th. Finish 14th then walk down to current 17th and make that the 15th.
