Suffering in the heat...

Played the course for the first time earlier with some mates who raved about their rounds there over the last few years...

I won't be going back and I don't think they will be either.

Credit where it is due though; it's July 2018 and there's been almost no rain for 7 weeks so everywhere is suffering, but we played a course yesterday (within 15 miles) where the fairways are green and the greens were receptive and true. None of which applies at Pyrford...

The greens were terrible. The grass length on the greens was nowhere near consistent. There were cracks on some, replacement patches on others, scorched areas, over-mown areas, unmarked GUR, random holes... And goose droppings... Okay, so we're all used to doing a bit of 'gardening' when lining up a putt, but this would have required a major amount of shovelling s*** if trying it on every hole!

The fairways were terrible. Scorched. Dead. Rock solid. I luckily realised early on that trying to get a club under the ball was pointless and started to play chip-and-runs with my 7-iron from up to 120 yards out. My mates soon tired of jarring their wrists with attempts to wedge shots in to the green off unforgiving lies. We even started to play shots towards the rough to give us a chance to get something under the next shot! We were stunned as we walked down the 16th and realised that the left-hand of that fairway and rough was green (probably from leakage from the neighbouring canal), but the rest was parched. There was a sprinkler head about a 100 yards from the green, but since the green 'oasis' was only about a foot across, I leave it for you to judge the last time it had been used.

The bunkers? They were a joke! (They were terrible!) So you have to make allowances for footprints of a non-human kind on a course with a high degree of wildlife, but every bunker I paid attention to was peppered with Footjoy and Adidas and Nike (etc.) prints. Add to that, more stones than the England Rugby scrum pack per bunker! And weeds!!! Really?!?!? The grass isn't growing on the rest of the course, but the weeds are flourishing in the bunkers? How come?

I absolutely concede that the design of Pyrford might make for a challenging course, but unless you can buy a course guide, "out of stock", from the less-than-bothered guys in the proshop, you're just going to lose ball after ball - and not enjoy the process!

Let me summarise by suggesting that if you have the option to play somewhere else for the money (or less!) then take it - at least through the summer of 2018.

Excellent course, unfortunately greens had been worked on prior to our round, and were in poor condition- although I understand they are generally great, just poor timing on our end.

Lovely course, well worth playing. Started around 4ish so £20 on teeofftimes. Very helpful in the proshop. Course in great condition with lush fairways and receptive greens. Fair bit of water knocking about which makes the course a good challenge. A bit of course knowledge helps on some holes so look forward to playing again in future.

Beautiful course, fairways in brilliant condition despite the recent wet weather (waterlogged between holes and in bunkers shows how much there has been). The greens were superb and ran true, credit to the greenstaff. Lovely friendly warm atmosphere with a welcome feel for visitors. Overall a tough course, SSS of 68 does not reflect the challenge with lots of water in play on several holes.

Stunning course in great condition, SSS of 70 from the whites doesn't suggest it is too difficult, but you have to play well to get your ball round without finding the water which is in play on several holes. Some tricky drives although the fairways are generally forgiving for a long hitter, if you're are short then be prepared to reload. Only thing that tainted my experience was going out behind a mixed doubles 4-ball match which I wasn't told about when booking or registration.

Nice course but beware the water!

Great course though water comes in to play quite a lot and so take some spare balls. For low handicappers shouldn't be an issue but for the rest of us makes it quite difficult. Holes could do with some information boards giving layout of the hole and water hazards, and I didn't seem to see any distance markers unless I missed them?

Bring your A game or plenty of balls.... Seriously if you can manage the course you have a chance to score well. If you don't know the course get it on your GPS to show where the water comes into play otherwise you might find an unexpected penalty. Greens were in very good condition.

New design clubhouse looks great still with great views over the lake and back 9. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

Stunning course, beautiful environment

On recommendation, I took our golf group/society (24 gents) to this amazing course, having played Wokefield Park the previous day. What an experience! One of the most beautiful layouts I have experienced, where much attention in recent years has obviously been paid to the contours of the course - and according to Adrian, our starter, there is still more planned! A new clubhouse welcomed us, with lovely catering facilities - but the pro shop is certainly a 'work in progress'. Staff were uniformly very welcoming and helpful - and Andrea, our lovely 'host' was on the ball, with a drinks cart which appeared on our rounds, from time to time, and lovely platters of sandwiches when we had finished. Nothing seemed too much trouble. Definitely a club 'on the rise', and one to which, I'm sure, many of our group will return.
