What the club says: High Throston is in a great location, with fantastic views over the Tees Bay and Cleveland Hills. Whilst far from the easist course, it is not the most challenging course, making it a great test for all level of golfer.

Appalling

Absolutely disgraceful conditions on the course. Before I even get to the greens a word on tee boxes, fairways and bunkers. Tee boxes are uneven and not cut so like teeing up in the rough. Fairways have no definition to the rough and only one cut in the rough anyway. Bunkers have no rakes in most and where they do, they’re full of weeds and snapped rakes. Greens have 4/5 different types of grass/weed on them and it’s like putting on a fairway-a poor fairway at that. Again, there isn’t any definition from Green to fringe and the flags lean (always) on every hole as they’re the incorrect size for the holes. £25 on a weekend is ridiculous £20 Mon-Fri also. Keep your money and go on a local field. Rubbish

Played the course today and it was in absolutely terrible condition. Hardly any grass on the greens, fairway was just mud in places with no grass. Terrible and really poor value for money. Should be 10-15 pounds a round. This place will close soon if this isn't rectified

Like a Patchwork Quilt

Not been to this course for 3 years, but decided to give it a go today, BOY do I wish I saved my money. The whole course was scruffy, every fairway and green was a patch work, after 5 holes, I was so dissapointed, I left. Save your money, travel to Wynyard, Stokesley, MIddlesbororugh or Saltburn, they are one hundred times better than the state of this course.

Friendly staff just shame on the ?25 price tag for 18 holes. Also available 9 holes for ?20 which I think is shocking for this course. Tee boxes and greens need a lot of attention. Tee boxes horrible. Greens very patchy with soil and sand and not level. This is not just a one off thing. This has been like this for years and still does not get any better. Course needs a tad updating with bins and ball washers. Better signs for holes directions. Tee box stone information needs a make over with new stones or even some nice paint. The pace of play was shocking. Very slow. They try to get as many people on in one go and no reasonable gaps between play. Club house has been remodelled and looks spot on. Just the rest of the course needs doing to match the price of play.

improving all the time

since new management it has come on leaps an dbounds. Yes a couple of months ago the greens got worse, but that was because it was the start of the greens being looked after and revived and they had to get worse before they get better. They now have around 3 groundsmen including a qualified greenkeeper. the greens have been hollowtined and sanded and they are improving all the time. yes they aren't the fastest or undulating of greens but they are a lot better than they have been. They have a bar and food available now as well as a great Teaching pro with a simulator on site now. its going from strength to strength and a great course for the price.

Poorly kept

Price has increased with nonwzrningvwhen z tee time was booked. Now £25 per rond on a weekend. Greens are very poor, patchy with mushrooms growing on them. Fairways were patchy and long, in somdxareas you could barely notice the differrnce between fairways and rough.

Needs some TLC

Having not played at Throston for a number of years, I was interested to see the course after reading some mixed reviews. I was not aware that the course was under new management or the reasons why it seems to have been neglected. It was clear to see groundsmen working around the course, watering greens etc however there are a number of priority areas that need attention. Some of the greens were patchy, others had mushrooms and dandelions on them. Fairways probably just need a lot of water on them together with weedkiller. Yardage markers on the fairways were non existent. Bunkers need topping up with sand rather than the granular stuff that is in them. The concrete tee boxes showing hole numbers, yardage etc probably all need replacing. I have a lot of sympathy for whoever the new owner is as there are so many improvements to make I guess it is a question of priorities as to where to start. I understand there are plans to put in a bar which the club has never has but I would hope the course is improved first before this happens.£20 a round was probably a bit pricey considering the condition. It was clear to see the efforts being made , I will probably play the course again if only to see the improvements first hand.
