What the club says: High Throston is in a great location, with fantastic views over the Tees Bay and Cleveland Hills. Whilst far from the easist course, it is not the most challenging course, making it a great test for all level of golfer.

no facilities despite having a lovely big 'empty' building

good courseplayed saturday 21st April. played as a single. Greens are quite slow and not much movement, only one hole i couldnt putt straight too. left a few short due to the slowness of the greens. The rough makes the course look easy as there isnt many trees or bushes to hit. Except the rough swallows balls. Miss the green by 2 inches, spend your full 5 minutes looking for it. If it hasnt sat on top of a bit of rough its swallowed by rough that must be around 3-5 inches deep and very thick. course layout is pretty good and the top of the hill can get a bit windy, but not when i played. Pace of play i didnt have a problem. I didnt meet the two ball in front of me and the two ball on buggies behind me never caught up to me.
need to pay by cash as no card payment device. no clubhouse to talk of, small seating area and snacks and tea coffee available.
£10 for 9 holes £16 for 18 holes £20 on weekends.
visitors are advised to get the map and the scorecard at the desk, I had to help two visitors on the 17th fairway looking for the 13th.
Good CourseCourse drains pretty well, which makes it an ideal winter choice, and was in pretty good condition. Some people seemed to have been unable to repair pitch marks and replace divots, but that's no fault of the course. Always good value and some spectacular views.

Neglected by owners and playersPlayed this course often in the past when I first started golf and thought it was great. Now I’ve played many more courses I realise how poor it is. Having played today I felt the need to leave a review. Pace of play was poor as for some reason they allowed a 5 ball on the course a few groups ahead of us. The tee boxes are not cut, it’s like teeing off from the grass in your local park. The bunkers are neglected and look like they haven’t been raked in weeks, by either other players or the greenskeepers, with some having bricks and dirt in them which look like GUR but haven’t been marked as GUR. Greens were slow with very long grass with far too many pitch marks left and not repaired. No many slopes in the green, just plenty of bobbles, not running true. The rough was far too long, which I don’t think was intentional to make the course more difficult, simply laziness. Some parts of the rough which was cut still had the cuttings laying on the top of the grass. I think players don’t respect the course because they know the owners clearly don’t look after it. Not worth the green fee compared to other courses in the area slightly more expensive but much better conditions. The course does have some good holes, which if the conditions were improved would be great, but are let down by the poor conditions.
Enjoyable for high handicapsIn decent condition considering recent weather. The Hill before the 11th will put off some less mobile golfers. The smaller hill before the 16th is wayyy to steep. That needs addressing. Borderline dangerous to go up in spikes.
Unsure.Disappointed having had good reviews from others. Think the heavy wind may have tainted the course slightly for me, but cons amongst other things (in order of experiencing them); the green fees cannot be paid using a debit/credit card, the rough is SO thick, that I lost 4/5 balls today having only just missed the fairway, there are no yardage markers around the course making it difficult for a visitor, the layout of the holes is cramped to a point where on one occasion we played towards the 16th green from the 14th tee box mistakenly, the slow pace of play from other golfers on the course was drastic. With their being a wind turbine situated at the top end of the course, I imagine that wind it prevalent, and think there are only 3/18 holes where you play WITH the prevailing wind and the rest are into it or across it, which is quite challenging/frustrating.
On the plus side, the condition of the fairways and greens was genuinely excellent given that i've had to play it due to my club being closed due to wet conditions. Will try again in the summer.
Fantastic courseI have played this course on numerous occasions and had a fantastic day everytime.
The course consists of average challenging holes through out and is exciting for all levels of player. You can have a serious game or a great day out relaxing and chipping along.
The view is stunning and is in my opinion the best course around the Durham and Cleveland area. The condition is always excellent as well.

Very ImpressedVisiting Family in the Local Area, Had a round at High Throston. Considering you can just turn up and play I was very pleasantly surprised with the course condition. The layout is very good which makes it a great scoring golf course. A challenging Par 3 up the hill is the only hole you have to think hard about. One very short Par 5 dog leg to the right, Driver and a short iron. Very impressed will 100% play again when visiting Family.
