This one into two parts really,
Sarah at the golf club was brilliant and couldn't do enough for us really helpful and friendly , the course was stunning , nice and wide fairways and a nice little over the water par3 , really recommend playing this one ,loved this course , now onto the hotel , really disappointing , we stayed 1 night and they was a private function on so we got told we couldn't sit in the so called bar area or the beer garden on a very sunny Friday evening , we had to sit in the reception hallway to have a beer after a days golfing , rude ( not professional hotel bar staff) after tipping a full tray of drinks over us then made us clean it up , then huffy as he got a drinks order wrong !,
So anyone booking a weekend hotel golfing trip here double check you can use the so called bar !

Nice course generally (could be better)
I have just played here on a 1 night 2 round deal from a golf break company. The course was busy on both days and the pace of play was on the quick side with most people hiring buggies. There was a starter on our first day. The front 9 was far easier than the back 9. A couple of points worth mentioning the greens were very hard and not receptive of spin although we are all low handicap golfers using premium golf balls, this meant we had to play short of the greens to hold the greens. Bunkers were either no sand or plenty of sand and although they have plenty of rakes some players hadn't bothered to rake them which is very poor.Reviewer Rating

Always great to play
Played Mottram a few times now and always enjoy a round here. Good practice facilities. Good flat layout but a fair walk around. Course in reasonable condition for time of year, greens looked patchy but rolled well. Front nine quite wide open, straight holes with nice par 3 3rd over water. Back nine a little more interesting with a few doglegs and long par 4s and 3s. Personal favourite hole being the 17th proper card wrecker, need to be left off the tee or the rough/trees or pond will grab your ball. Friendly welcome and nice beer in the Claret Jug after another enjoyable day.Reviewer Rating

Fairways not cut
It is not often that you can lose balls on fairways but it happened several times during our round because the fairways appeared to not have been cut for weeks. This combined with so many leaves meant that there was no definition on the course. All the courses in the area have had seriously wet weather over recent weeks but this was by far the worst condition of any that we have played recently. The majority of bunkers appeared to also not have been raked and were full of animal and golfers footprints. Even lift ,clean and place throughout the green could not make this an enjoyable experience. Halfway hut closed.Staff in the Club House were friendly but food quality was moderate, dry sliced brown bread for the sandwiches, poorly made.

Lovely course.. pathetic pace of play..
We played here on a Friday afternoon, so had a discounted price for the round. No organisation present as they seem to have crammed in as many groups as possible, as we arrived on the first tee to 3 groups standing there waiting (all fourballs). So we waited a while to go off, then as soon as we did, giving the group in front at least 10 mins, we still were forced to wait for 5 mins to play our 2nd shots to the green, as the group in front chatted on the green and walked to each other's balls EVERY SINGLE SHOT.
This pattern all the way around till we decided we'd had enough and walked off after the 15th (as did another group in front aswell a few holes back).
To our astonishment we find the group 2 in front have clear traffic in front all the way to the 18th! We were fuming, a disgraceful lack of etiquette at not letting quicker groups behind them through whilst we looked on to see them essentially hacking , more suited to a local muni, than embarrassing themselves around a course of a certain pedigree. To compound it they were in buggies ffs! As we saw them drive back down our fairway to retrieve a cover. Pair of scruffy clowns.
Ruined the whole day, so nearly 5 hrs into the round by the 15th we decided to cut our losses, end the misery and have a beer.
The course is a decent enough challenge for the average golfer with some great holes and some not so fantastic ones. It is in great condition and the greens were spot on. Oh and the ball machine for the driving range is a bit stingy, short changes you balls.
If you're considering grabbing a cheap deal to play here.. don't bother, heed the advice of others and stay clear or be subjected to a 6hrs+ round, play at first thing or wait till the late evening as it's worth a go.
Sort your booking system out and stop cramming loads of people with short intervals.

Huge complaint however regarding the pace of play - perhaps not the courses fault (although starter after fron 9 should have noted the slow play) but the fourball in front of us should never have been allowed to play this course as they were so far out of their depth on such a long course, we were a 2 ball and the round took us 5hrs35mins we started at 12:50 and only just made it back in playable light it was agonisingly slow.
Clubhouse facilities are very good but when we got in we were told that they were not serving any food - 17:30 on a busy Sunday evening and no food? (even if after looking at the menu it was incredibly overpriced) - that's poor in my view.
Overall this is a simialr story to another De Vere course Carden Park - which also has a fairly nondescript front 9 and a good back 9. As someone else has said if you're not enjoying the front 9 just hold on for the back it does get better. I managed to get a decent deal on LivingSocial but had I paid full price I think I would have thought ot to be very expensive for what we experienced.

Course wise; Very open front 9 and in my opinion in need of some serious planting as it's fairly bland, just not enough features to justify the 'Devere' course name, I play off a 20hcp and shot 45(36) on the front, so would say its not too difficult for the higher handicap.
Back 9 is a very different story, a lot better visually, plenty of trees, water etc, a lot more thought & skill is required in order to get round without pain! Hence I shot 52(36) on the back.....To be honest I quite enjoyed the back 9, which is really what stopped me from giving negative feedback, so bear that in mind when you turn up at the first tee, then at least you know it will get better!
All in all if you can get a decent price for a round here then it's not a bad course, otherwise I would definitely go to other Devere courses, as they are a lot better feature wise, and aesthetically (I've played them all).
(I would also add that the driving range is a good 200yd trek down the side of the first fairway, and I mean at the side, watch out for hooks!!!)

a game of 2 halves
Front nine is flat and a nice parkland course. Really liked the 4th hole which is so nice framed by what I'd call dunes if one a links course.Back nine (the origiginal 9 holes I understand - is an absolute brute. A couple of monster par 4's at around 450 yards were so difficult. The 17th is tremendous dog leg and down hill over a nasty ditch, a real test of golf.
Found the par 3's tough especially the 210 yard 16th.
I felt batterd and bruised after that nine holes but enjoyed it.
Found the staff in the pro shop rather unfriendly and unwelcoming. but don;t let them put you off. It is a good test of golf !
Amazing houses as you drive through Wilmslow to get there. Wow!!
