Joy for Jones & Wilson With Wins at Mentmore

By: Golf Shake | Fri 26 Jul 2013

The Gtour held back-to-back events on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21 July at the stunning Mentmore Golf and Country Club.

The Buckinghamshire venue which hosted the Jamega Tour last month, boasts two championship courses which challenged the Gtour players playing both courses over the weekend.

The Saturday competition took place on the Rosebery course and David Wilson continued his good form to claim victory by two points after a stunning 41 points which included a birdie-birdie finish to take the win. The victory was particularly pleasing as it propels him to the top of the birdie flight order of merit.

“To say I’m stunned by the win is an understatement,” said Wilson.

“I’ve been working a lot on my game recently; especially my short irons and it seemed to pay off. I was just trying to keep the ball in play on every hole which meant sacrificing distance off the tee as I went with a 5-wood on a lot of the holes instead of driver and it certainly paid off.”

Gemma Allen kept up her superb form throughout the campaign with a second place finish on count-back. Allen who sits in second place on the overall standings in the order of merit pipped Lee Mooney to the runner-up spot both posting 39 points.

With the main stay of players stopping overnight the clouds cleared out for what was another sell out event on day two.

The Rothschild course this time played host with Alun Jones taking the victors spoils with 37 points after a back-nine count-back.

The 20 points scored for his inward nine was enough to snatch victory from Wai Leung Law and Allen who’s second successive top-3 finish rounded off a great weekend for her.

Jones who endured a roller-coaster weekend by his own standards said something just clicked on Sunday to help his game:

“Saturday was difficult. The Rosebery is usually my preferred course around here but after sticking my drive in the lake on the 1st and lipping out five or six times I think I’ve changed my mind.

“I started off Sunday just a lot more relaxed and everything just seemed to work. The putts that were lipping out dropped and I knew walking off the 18th with the score I had would put me in with a shout and I was right.”

There were also familiar names within the top-10 on both days over the weekend as Wilson followed up his win the previous day with a sixth place finish with the same points as Colin Ainsworth who added a 5th place finish to the 9th place he he had on Saturday to continue his impressive season.

Repeat top-10’s over the weekend for Gary Bickerstaff, Graham Miles and Carl Nicholas meant more big moves for players looking to cement their place in the semi-final in November.

You can view the rest of the scores and the up-to-date order of merits on the Gtour website.

The next event of the 2013 Gtour season is on Saturday 31 August at Formby Hall and once again places are booking up fast. To tee it up at one of the finest course on England’s golf coast visit www.gtour.co.uk
