Course itself was a little heavy, with quiet a lot of standing water, but no worse than other courses in the region (excluding the links courses).
What struck me more about the course, was how well planned the course is, the bunkers are VERY SIMILAR to Gleneagles PGA Centenary (Ryder Cup) Course, Very Deep, and to be avoided at all costs.
This is a course, you absolutely must adopt course management, its also not a short course, no 2 holes are alike, and the par 3's are a gem.
You can score well here, as long as you drive well (and long), and hit good 2nd shots, and putt well, LOL.
saying that, the greens we're true, and in very good condition.
It should also be noted, as a few other reviews have mentioned about poor drainage, I noted drainage works on at least half a dozen holes, which will improve the situation, in a short space of time. How many other courses are spending money on their course upkeep ?
Overall I would rate the course as follows;
Condition. 6/10. (Dampness could not be avoided)
Layout 10/10 (Montgomery will be proud, of his effort)
Greens 10/10 (True, and in good condition)
Clubhouse 10/10 (Cannot fault it)

During a wet round the greens were receptive and still managed to play fast considering the water. The previous reviews make mention of poor drainage however this was not my experience as i have been informed that this aspect has been looked at by the green staff and money spent to improve it which they have.
Word of warning AVOID THE BUNKERS! They have strategically placed the fairway bunkers which are playable however the greenside bunkers are fraught with danger with steep faces, id be lying if i didnt take 2 strokes to get out of 2 of them. They were a good challenge.
The pylon mentioned on one of the holes would appear to have been removed as i did not come across one.
When paying in excellent weather the ball would run on the fairways adding length to my drives which i dont have this made for an enjoyable experience. The view from the course were magnificent with views all the way to Arran and the drive into the course through the castle grounds is impressive.
This course is still young and developing and when it does achieve its potential i could foresee a Euro tour event in the future, this is shown by a pro tour event taking place next month.
The most welcoming feature of this course is the relaxed casual enviroment which is extended to the clubhouse and restaurant where dress codes are not a strict as other clubs i have played. This is a personal view as i find the snobbery and "traditions" of other clubs outdated.
One negative aspect of my visits were slow play although i do appreciate this does not happen all the time.
I look forward to making bset use of my new membership.

Very interesting layout and design
Set in the grounds of a 13th century castle complex this course benefits from some amazing backdrops and views. Add in the skill and experience of Colin Montgomerie and you have a real golfing experience. It has an unusual 19 hole layout with the final hole called "The Decider". It fits beautifully into the available grounds and is a great idea, well executed. There had been very little rain in the past 3 weeks and the ground was hard but the greens were in an acceptable condition. The short holes are all challenges and are picturesque from all angles. This is a good course that will only get better with age as it has time to mature. I intend to return in a few years as I am convinced that it will mature into an extremely popular and well used facility. The variety of holes take advantage of the openness to the changing wind directions. We didn't sample the food as when our rounds had completed the restaurant had closed but all previous reviewers express positive comments. There is a real flow to the course layout and the fairway definition from the tee is really good. I recommend use of a course planner and be prepared for extra yardage to be walked between tee's if carrying or using a trolley. There are interesting terrain changes and some elevated tee's that give views across the course and its surrounding areas.I really enjoyed the experience of playing at Rowallan Castle.(Round played: May 2018 - Score: 104 Handicap: 17.9)
