Nice pay and play course very golfer friendly with it being very short with no par 5s, quite often hitting ball from above or below feet especially on the back 9 which make it more testing, bunkers could do with some more sand in the greens are suprisingly nice and fairways on most holes in decent condition

Lovely little course just outside Mangotsfield. This course a few things which let it down. The first is a lack of par5 holes which I guess is impossible to rectify it does have a couple of long par 4 holes which will test longer hitters. The other things are easily fixed. It could do with a few ball cleaners near the tee and quality yardage markers. They have the red and yellow discs in the fairways but unless your ball lands on it you need to hunt for them as they are not obvious to see unless you are standing right next to them. I would like to see stake markers next to the fairway at 150/100 yards which can be easily seen. In my opinion this would increase the pace of play.

The course uses it wonderful undulations well and you will play the ball above and below your feet often testing how dynamic your golf game is. The greens were very good condition and very forgiving. Some of the bunkers could do with a little care but generally in good condition. There are multiple par4 holes which are under 320 yards so larger hitters of the ball can hit the green in one shot. However on many of these holes you might be better playing it safe. I would happily play at this course again.

(Round played: Nov 2015 - Score: 89 Handicap: 16.7)

Shortwood lodge is just outside of Mangotsfield just off the ringroad. Attached to Woodlands golf club just up the road between the M5 and M32 this golf course is very different, I was disappointed to see that there were no ball cleaners on the course and the distance markers to the green could sometime be hard to find. On paper this course looks rather boring with the vast majority of the holes being relatively short par 4s.

However I was pleasantly surprised many holes on the par 4s are reachable for bigger hitters of the golf ball but because of the natural hilliness of the land every hole feels different. You can have two holes exactly the same length but when playing uphill or downhill makes for different challenges. The views at the upper parts of the course were wonderful, you can see across Mangotsfield and see the school and what I assume is Kingswood. Looking Easterly the rolling farmland is very pleasing to the eye as well.

This is a more forgiving course with few water hazards and generous fairways. The course was in good condition for late November with only 2 greens (14th and 15th) at the bottom of the hills starting to struggle with being saturated with water. I look forward to playing this course again in the spring. If you play Woodlands and Thornbury often like I do this is another good local course which is worth a couple of rounds.

Course is not very challenging but great value for money and no need to book a tee time. Great course for beginners as most holes forgive any miss hit drives.
