This is one of the best courses, if not the best, I have ever played. It is truly amazing, the bunkers are lethal, many two or three times your height, but the greens are flat so you can score well. It is also a very beautiful course, you'll love it. Great facilities, lovely food.

Great course, in wonderful condition despite significant rain in the week before. The greens and bunkers live up to expectation. Overall one I'm pleased to say I have played.

Just been back to Woodhall Spa nad played both courses but will just rank the Hotchkin. This deserves its very high ranking it is a fantastic course but very challenging with very long carries from the whites. Considering its quality this is rela value for money.

Quite simply this is one of the finest courses I have ever had the pleasure of playing. I was lucky enough to play Walton Heath Old last year and its certainly a notch or two up from there.

Its quite difficult to pick out holes as there is such a consistent level of class that flows through the course. Almost every hole is beautifully framed with wonderful natural woodland, heather and bracken. And such was the quality of the fairway turf that it was a real pleasure to play from.

The most notable features (apart from the huge amount of wildlife) is of course the bunkers. I consider myself a good bunker player for my handicap but after a night of heavy rain and a morning of intermittment drizzle they proved to be a real test with each ball coated in sand. But they were generally fairly located and only punished errant shots.

The defense of the course is from tee to green whereas when you reached the relatively small greens they were very true but not overly quick. This seems like a fair balance to me. If it had been a mix of the Hotckin tee to green and then Bracken type undulating greens I would have scored materially higher.

Whilst the overall facilities are excellent I would knock it down a notch for aesthetics as the clubhouse and changing rooms look more like a council office extension than the home of English Golf. Also its a real bugger to get to being a good 3.5 hours from London due to distance from mainline railway station. Mind you that probably helped it being very quiet on the day we played.

Great course, very tricky in places with some huge deep bunkers.
Would love to pay it again and would definitely recommend it to all, for high handicappers like me take your time.

By far the best inland course I have ever played! The bunkers are fantastic and placed in all the right places! The greens are as true as any I have ever played and the scenery is breath taking. The only down side is the location, but well worth the travelling!

Utterly disagree with the comment about needing to be lower than a 5 handicap to enjoy the Hotchkin. I have been know to shoot over 100 on more than a few occasions, but I found it an absolutely superlative golfing experience.

Played the Bracken on the Saturday which is a great second course, some very undulating greens which whilst tricky, also run very true which makes it a fair challenge.

As for the Hotchkin then it's everything you imagined. Easily the best heath land course I've ever played, and I suspect the best I will ever play. Yes it has some nasty bunkers and yes some of them are very steep. But you can get out of the vast majority of them assuming you are not up completely against the lip. Plus it made me think a lot more about my game which in turn meant I scored relatively well for me. So instead of me trying to shoot 190 yards on to a well guarded green which would more than likely end up with me in a bunker, I'd lay up and then play a short pitch shot on to the green and take the bogey.

Greens in superb condition and in addition to the pure golfing challenge, the course itself is really rather beautiful. All the staff we came across were very friendly. I must admit I was a bit apprehensive and nervous as my handicap is in the 20s, but they made me feel at home and very relaxed which only added to the great weekend.

Booked it through the Petwood hotel on a dinner b & b deal and for all that plus 2 rounds of superb golf it's excellent value for money. I would urge any serious golfer to play it at least once.

Did the weekend deal and played both courses. Was so blown away by the hotchkin that after a quick bite to eat we went in to the pro shop and payed a considerable sum to play it again.... straight away! The 2 courses work well together with the bracken a challange with very difficult greens but tollerant to way wood drives and the hotchkin with tight fairways and more sand than skegness beach! This place is awesome. Stayed at the woodhall spa hotel as part of the deal which was very good
