Its quite difficult to pick out holes as there is such a consistent level of class that flows through the course. Almost every hole is beautifully framed with wonderful natural woodland, heather and bracken. And such was the quality of the fairway turf that it was a real pleasure to play from.
The most notable features (apart from the huge amount of wildlife) is of course the bunkers. I consider myself a good bunker player for my handicap but after a night of heavy rain and a morning of intermittment drizzle they proved to be a real test with each ball coated in sand. But they were generally fairly located and only punished errant shots.
The defense of the course is from tee to green whereas when you reached the relatively small greens they were very true but not overly quick. This seems like a fair balance to me. If it had been a mix of the Hotckin tee to green and then Bracken type undulating greens I would have scored materially higher.
Whilst the overall facilities are excellent I would knock it down a notch for aesthetics as the clubhouse and changing rooms look more like a council office extension than the home of English Golf. Also its a real bugger to get to being a good 3.5 hours from London due to distance from mainline railway station. Mind you that probably helped it being very quiet on the day we played.

Played the Bracken on the Saturday which is a great second course, some very undulating greens which whilst tricky, also run very true which makes it a fair challenge.
As for the Hotchkin then it's everything you imagined. Easily the best heath land course I've ever played, and I suspect the best I will ever play. Yes it has some nasty bunkers and yes some of them are very steep. But you can get out of the vast majority of them assuming you are not up completely against the lip. Plus it made me think a lot more about my game which in turn meant I scored relatively well for me. So instead of me trying to shoot 190 yards on to a well guarded green which would more than likely end up with me in a bunker, I'd lay up and then play a short pitch shot on to the green and take the bogey.
Greens in superb condition and in addition to the pure golfing challenge, the course itself is really rather beautiful. All the staff we came across were very friendly. I must admit I was a bit apprehensive and nervous as my handicap is in the 20s, but they made me feel at home and very relaxed which only added to the great weekend.
Booked it through the Petwood hotel on a dinner b & b deal and for all that plus 2 rounds of superb golf it's excellent value for money. I would urge any serious golfer to play it at least once.
