I\'ve always wanted to play Woodhall Spa Golf Courses , so this year we entered the spring meeting competition. The Hotchkin course was a great disappointment, the greens where very bumpy and the general condition of the course was very scruffy. The famous bunkers where what I was expecting but the sand was like builders sand. Maybe it was early in the golf season but that beggars the question why hold a tournament ( people coming from all over the UK to play) at this time of the year. It\'s ranked as one of the best courses in the UK , sorry but I could name 200 courses in the England that are better.

Decent Second Course

This is the back up course to the Hotchkin. It is supposed to be designed by Donald Steel but it is difficult to pinpoint his involvement as the course lacks identity and has he ever been back? This is a perfectly fair second course but only that. There are no signs on any hole - not even a perfunctory wooden slab with a number on it - it cannot be that expensive. The greens are the clear standout on this course with a number of swales that make approach shots important to which side of the green you hit. If there was some money spent on the course it would be a decent track but at the moment it is definitely second fiddle to the Hotchkin.

Greens and fairways are good BUT ever so boring. They are all long holes, lots of bunkers (rock hard) and apart from the length all but short of a challenge. How this course was rated number 4 in the UK beats me, let alone under the top 100 in the world. Value for money - a big NO

Nice course to play as opposed to Hotchin. Last few holes don't live up to expectations, particularly the last its just an ordinary hole you would find on most good courses. Is it worth the money, ? try for yourself and see!

Good course

A number of us play one of the courses each year, as Clubs receive invites for Captains and Secretary. To be honest I wouldn't pay what they ask for a green fee otherwise. this year we played the Hotchkin (for some reason most of our Captains prefer this course, but I think that is purely down to reputation, so they can say they've played it). Personally I'd have preferred to play the Bracken - at my age I prefer the putting challenge rather than a long driving challenge!
A lot of work has been done on the course, removing steps down into bunkers (I saw at least one which stills needs to be done). No-one seems to rake the bunkers, and at least one which I was in was full of stones - some quite large. The greens were slower this year than I have ever experienced them, but at least they were consistent. Fairways were in very good order, as were the tees.
The starter told us some changes are being made to bring the course back to more of a heathland course, and this seemed to be reflected in the removal of some quite large trees, which seemed to allow the wind to swirl around more than usual. He also warned us that all the trouble is at the front of the greens, and this usually involved slopes taking the ball into greenside bunkers - i.e. impossible to run the ball up to the green unless you were arrow straight. The heather doesn't usually come into play unless you are short off the tee or particularly wayward.
The staff in the bar/restaurant were excellent, and we all enjoyed the breakfast, and the guys who weren't driving enjoyed the beers afterwards, and the bar prices were reasonable. Prices in the pro-shop seemed a little expensive, and for a change there was very little 'on sale'. One of our guys was hoping to get a buggy, but these were all out, so bear this in mind and pre-order if someone in your group needs one.

Played the Hotchkin course on a windy day yesterday. The course is a real test of your golfing prowess and a lot of thought is needed to plot your way round successfully. Bunkers are penal and need to be avoided if you are to score well.
The course was in great condition and really dry underfoot however I must say that the greens were a major disappointment as I expected them to be a lot quicker and less bobbly than they were.
Overall a good day but would like to return when the greens are in a better condition.

Golf gone mental, if you are higher than a 5 handicapper don't bother as it is crucify you. The bunkers, well i say bunkers they are more like beaches with vertical walls, get in any of the bunkers besides the greens and you have had it. The bunkers make the course so tough, but there are some stunning holes on it. For what it is the price is too much there are far better courses that are much cheaper.

Second course? Probably harder than the main one.

Well, if the Hotchkin is difficult, this one can verge on the impossible. It's defence is the green complexes and some look like they've got elephants buried under them.
Many holes need a real thought process to get from tee to green. The bunkers aren't as numerous as the Hotchkin, but they all seem to be in the wrong (right?) place. and just for good measure there's plenty of water hazards to catch you out.

The Bracken is an open and inviting parkland course, not without it's challenges but much more forgiving of mid and higher handicap golfers than the adjacent Hotchkin Course.

Unfortunate to play this on a seriously windy day - if this had been a medal, I think CSS would have made it non-qualifying. The course itself is very good, but there are considerable changes going on with lots of areas of new turf (mostly in play so no problem there). The starter told us the very deep bunkers with steps into them have got to be changed (steps removed for health and safety reasons), so slopes are being put in instead of steps. Overall, the tees, fairways, greens and bunkers were all in good condition, although it seems most players don't rake the bunkers after visiting them!

A really great golf course, wonderful condition. You need to be long and straight off the tee, otherwise there are massive deep bunkers and lots of heather waiting for you! The range, shop and bar are all top notch. Its a bit more expensive than some, and Woodhall Spa is in the middle of nowhere, but well worth the trip. We will be back.

The course is hard for a player of my limited ability. Bunkers are placed at ideal lengths to capture different types of shots. Morning round was a breeze completed in 4 hour and 5 minutes but afternoon round behind numerous 4 balls was a lot slower and in the rain, an unpleasant 6 hour slog not helped by golfers with multiple practise swings and no course awareness. All staff members that we encountered were lovely. I would recommend playing it but doubt that I would return myself now that box ticked
