Decent Second Course
This is the back up course to the Hotchkin. It is supposed to be designed by Donald Steel but it is difficult to pinpoint his involvement as the course lacks identity and has he ever been back? This is a perfectly fair second course but only that. There are no signs on any hole - not even a perfunctory wooden slab with a number on it - it cannot be that expensive. The greens are the clear standout on this course with a number of swales that make approach shots important to which side of the green you hit. If there was some money spent on the course it would be a decent track but at the moment it is definitely second fiddle to the Hotchkin.(Round played: Jul 2020 - Score: 89 Handicap: 12.5)

Good course
A number of us play one of the courses each year, as Clubs receive invites for Captains and Secretary. To be honest I wouldn't pay what they ask for a green fee otherwise. this year we played the Hotchkin (for some reason most of our Captains prefer this course, but I think that is purely down to reputation, so they can say they've played it). Personally I'd have preferred to play the Bracken - at my age I prefer the putting challenge rather than a long driving challenge!A lot of work has been done on the course, removing steps down into bunkers (I saw at least one which stills needs to be done). No-one seems to rake the bunkers, and at least one which I was in was full of stones - some quite large. The greens were slower this year than I have ever experienced them, but at least they were consistent. Fairways were in very good order, as were the tees.
The starter told us some changes are being made to bring the course back to more of a heathland course, and this seemed to be reflected in the removal of some quite large trees, which seemed to allow the wind to swirl around more than usual. He also warned us that all the trouble is at the front of the greens, and this usually involved slopes taking the ball into greenside bunkers - i.e. impossible to run the ball up to the green unless you were arrow straight. The heather doesn't usually come into play unless you are short off the tee or particularly wayward.
The staff in the bar/restaurant were excellent, and we all enjoyed the breakfast, and the guys who weren't driving enjoyed the beers afterwards, and the bar prices were reasonable. Prices in the pro-shop seemed a little expensive, and for a change there was very little 'on sale'. One of our guys was hoping to get a buggy, but these were all out, so bear this in mind and pre-order if someone in your group needs one.

The course was in great condition and really dry underfoot however I must say that the greens were a major disappointment as I expected them to be a lot quicker and less bobbly than they were.
Overall a good day but would like to return when the greens are in a better condition.

The course
Played the Bracken this week, after all the dry weather it is in good condition, greens a little slow. I would save yourself a lot of money and eat in the village, much better quality food and value for money.Reviewer Rating
