Natural course worth experiencing.

Great course with many natural features including the heather that covers most of the course. Beware the bunkers which are very deep, and a real penalty. Beautiful greens with slight undulations.

Superb condition - great society course

The Bracken is an open and inviting parkland course, not without it's challenges but much more forgiving of mid and higher handicap golfers than the adjacent Hotchkin Course.

Good course

A number of us play one of the courses each year, as Clubs receive invites for Captains and Secretary. To be honest I wouldn't pay what they ask for a green fee otherwise. this year we played the Hotchkin (for some reason most of our Captains prefer this course, but I think that is purely down to reputation, so they can say they've played it). Personally I'd have preferred to play the Bracken - at my age I prefer the putting challenge rather than a long driving challenge!
A lot of work has been done on the course, removing steps down into bunkers (I saw at least one which stills needs to be done). No-one seems to rake the bunkers, and at least one which I was in was full of stones - some quite large. The greens were slower this year than I have ever experienced them, but at least they were consistent. Fairways were in very good order, as were the tees.
The starter told us some changes are being made to bring the course back to more of a heathland course, and this seemed to be reflected in the removal of some quite large trees, which seemed to allow the wind to swirl around more than usual. He also warned us that all the trouble is at the front of the greens, and this usually involved slopes taking the ball into greenside bunkers - i.e. impossible to run the ball up to the green unless you were arrow straight. The heather doesn't usually come into play unless you are short off the tee or particularly wayward.
The staff in the bar/restaurant were excellent, and we all enjoyed the breakfast, and the guys who weren't driving enjoyed the beers afterwards, and the bar prices were reasonable. Prices in the pro-shop seemed a little expensive, and for a change there was very little 'on sale'. One of our guys was hoping to get a buggy, but these were all out, so bear this in mind and pre-order if someone in your group needs one.

Fantastic course and venue

What a course! Often overshadowed by its more famous hotchkin layout, the bracken is a must play. Very different challenge that yeasts every aspect of your game, especially around the greens which are large and contoured. Sorry game and putting need to be on song to score well.

A lot of work going on so some temp holes. Weather has been bad but greens & fairways were not good at all. Shame as played this time last year & was in perfect condition.

stands with the Hotchkin

A great test of golf, totally different to the Hotchkin but just as challenging. Tree lined fairways, some requiring accurate tee shot, are a feature of this course. The undulating greens require an accurate second shot, or play safe with a lay-up and rely on a good chip. Never second best to the Hotchkin and well worth the weekend package for DBB and 2 courses.

Woodhall Spa, the 'oasis' of East Lincolnshire. My old home course. I love the Hotchkin. This inland links as a must for any golfer to play before they die. Check out the Dower House Hotel which backs on to the Bracken Course if you need a place to stay.

Unfortunate to play this on a seriously windy day - if this had been a medal, I think CSS would have made it non-qualifying. The course itself is very good, but there are considerable changes going on with lots of areas of new turf (mostly in play so no problem there). The starter told us the very deep bunkers with steps into them have got to be changed (steps removed for health and safety reasons), so slopes are being put in instead of steps. Overall, the tees, fairways, greens and bunkers were all in good condition, although it seems most players don't rake the bunkers after visiting them!

Lovely course fairway like plying off of putting green (felt guiltily taking divot). Some scary high bunkers with so much clean stone free sand. Lots of gorse for wayward shots but still possible to find your ball. Was good value for me as playing as part of a society day not sure what prices are like outside of this.
