The greens and aprons are very good the greens run true but the rest of the course is not maintained. The fairways are non existent lucky to find a bit of grass just shrubby bare patches. Most of tee boxes poor . The bunkers are a challenge because they contain no sand they are filled with a kind of soil loam mixture which requires a different technique to get the ball out . Overall a very challenging course not helped because of lack of fairways

Overrated course with dated facilities

Poorly designed course despite the generally positive reviews - short, narrow, and monotonously unforgiving off the tee. Absurd over use of gorse bushes and thick vegetation.

“Gorse and water share the disadvantage that it is practically impossible to play out of them and they are a frequent cause of lost balls. It would appear, therefore, that that they should not be used to any great extent as hazards.”
(H S Colt, Essays on Golf-Course Architecture, 1920)

“There should be a complete absence of the annoyance and irritation caused by the necessity of searching for lost balls.”
(Alistair Mackenzie, Golf Architecture, 1920)

Tired, needs watering!

Good Layout after 3rd Hole. Very slow play. Tired set up, buildings and condition, Greens quick but well worn, It Rests on history and tradition - needs an enormous upgrade!

Good course played in good weather. As a visitor it would be useful to have directions to the next tee. Also difficult to see hole number signs.

Good course that is challenging. Condition is generally ok, the greens can be inconsistent in speed. I have played it many times, played it this week and was stunned at a green fee increase of 50%. Definitely not worth £60 for a midweek round, I have played far better courses for less than this.

Greens not watered at all and if you run off the fairway your ball is pretty much lost in the heather, hardly any cut on the fairways and one of the most unforgiving courses I've played.

The layout is nice and the area is stunning but the course is not in great condition. Fairways very patchy, Bunkers very inconsistent. Greens run very quick and true but you cant stop a ball on the approach as they bone dry underneath. A very tough course but needs abit of tlc. Plus no range just a open field which is a shame.

Thorpeness Weekend

Hospitality and accommodation very good but on course the fairways, some tee boxes and greens looking tired. No marshalling on course to move slow play along - 5 hour plus 4 Ball round not good.
