What the club says: The course is a challenging nine-hole heathland layout, free draining and playable virtually all year round. It features greens that have received much praise, and are widely regarded as amongst the best in East Anglia.

Adding to the pleasure of playing at Southwold are the views of the town and the Suffolk Heritage Coast.

Interesting 2 tee course

Lots of thick heather and you don't go into it! 5 lost golf balls 3 from tee and one on 4th shot on 11th! Greens were true with lots of undulations. Tees in good condition as well

Visited the club whilst on holiday with family and had a few hours to break away. Its a very small club just inland of Southwold so sadly only sea views on one hole. Although we played 18, its really a 9 hole course with some of the second 9 tea boxes being slightly different in locations but playing the same fairways and greens. For this reason alone I feel that their rate of £42 is too expensive, particularly that the condition of the course is average. I will say that they had just sanded the greens (not part of this review) and allowed us to play at the twilight rate (after 14:00) of £20 which I think is much more reflective of the general course condition and 2 nines. The course has a nice layout with some interesting holes across the landscape, fortunately the rough was down when we played but there's gorse on every hole for a wayward shot. A links approach is needed and I can imagine holes being completely different to play depending on the wind direction and strength. The staff were very friendly and the clubhouse is a nice place for a beer afterwards (Adnams of course). With two tees playing to 9 greens and a number of public footpaths crossing the course I can see it getting very busy during the Summer months. If you're in the area for a holiday I do recommend it but go for a twilight tee time and be aware it may be a long round in the Summer.

Sunny on the Suffolk Coast

It is hard not to enjoy golf whilst the sun is shining but Southwold really is something special. We played on an evening twilight rate which was great value, better still there were very few people on the course. Every hole offers a different challenge with plenty of gorse to collect poor shots. The fairways were running with the occasional "links" bounce but all to be expected from a coastal course. The greens are relatively small and well protected but offer an exceptional putting surface, most probably the best I have putted on.
We had a quick bite to eat in the Clubhouse before golf and the staff and members made us feel very welcome.

Just had 9 holes this afternoon, I normally play at another local course so it was interesting to see what Southwold had to offer.
This is a real test of golf with a very interesting lay out. Each hole requires you to engage your golfing brain! No grip it and rip it here!
We stopped for coffee and lovely fruit cake in the charming clubhouse to discuss our missed birdie puts!
All in all, lovely course with a very friendly atmosphere and welcoming staff.
We will be back!

Well laid out course with good mix of longish par 5s, narrow/ dog-leg par 4s and punitive rough. Several holes require tactical use of 3 wood or rescue club off tee. Greens in lovely condition although most are rather flat, lacking linksy breaks for added interest (still couldn't make a put though!).

Just a 9 hole course, played from 18 different tees. The greens were in excellent condition for the time of year considering the traffic they must get. Was a bit slow but not really suprising but overall a most enjoyable day.

Played several times over the last few years when visiting Southwold & its a nice, friendly club and a good test, especially when the wind whips up. Yes its a 9 hole course, but they change the tees & the holes do play differently. Standout holes are 7, 8 & 9. Returning next month & looking fwd to it.

Played here Friday 24th Jan on a 'twilight' pass - 18 holes for £18, so excellent value, even if the course had turned out to be not that good.
Turned up on my own and the very helpful (and new pro) soon found me a pair to play with on the front 9. Wayne and Phil - who just happened to be the Seniors capt and vice-capt - couldn't have been nicer. Played back 9 with the head greenskeeper - Nick - again a very nice guy.
Despite the recent awful weather and a heavy frost that morning, the course was in very good condition. The greens, despite being treated the day before were true, firm and reasonably fast. No bobbles or odd breaks and bounce. In short a delight to putt on, especially given the time of year.
The course is very 'natural' - it's on common land - and you do get walkers wandering about, but it's very enjoyable with some challenging holes, notably the 8th/17th.
In short, thoroughly enjoyable and well worth the visit. I'll be back!
Score (yellows) - 83, handicap - 16
