Very well designed - makes you think!

Specific tee times are not bookable, but I’d called a few days earlier and was advised when would be a good time to play. On this Friday morning the course wasn’t busy. An impressive clubhouse & Pro shop where I was given a friendly welcome.... I felt I was in for a good day.

Course is very well laid out with a good mix of longer holes with wide fairways and some short, tighter par-4’s, where accuracy is important. Several holes have cross bunkers so you have to know your club distances. No water in play but straying too far from the fairway will find trouble in trees, longer grass or mounds/hollows that will leave an awkward recovery.

The four par-3 holes are fantastic. All well protected by bunkers so again, club distance is vital, although you’ll probably only need an iron. They’re all short, max 152 yds from yellows.... who really needs a par-3 hole over 200yds? (I hope my home club read this!!)

Sonning is a beautiful golf course, maintained to perfection. I found no negatives.... even the air line had enough pressure to remove all grass from my shoes & trolley! Not local for me, but I will be playing here again.

Absolute Stunner!!

A wonderful golf course in a wonderful setting. Even though we played on temp greens due to heavy rain for 3 days before playing we could not fault the experience of playing this challenging and picturesque course. They view from the fairway to the final green, with the outstanding clubhouse behind, is worth the visit on its own.

A Wet round

With Winter Rules and a persistent drizzle the round was still enjoyable despite having to clean the ball after every shot. Greens were excellent I only needed to repair my own pitch mark. We had to hire trolleys as ours didn't have hedgehog wheels and there was only one power trolley available so I had to pull mine. We had to tee off from the 12th as there was a members roll up which would have delayed our booked tee time, but this worked out as we only had to follow one 3 ball for 7 holes and had no one following us. We didn't partake of food or drink.

I played on an afternoon with a fair green fee of £29. The course is in lovely condition and with the irrigation system everywhere was green which make a change, there are 6 holes of over 400 yards off the yellows which is a good test and the shortest par four isn't really worth going for as they have a ditch at the back of the green. Hole 16 was very tough with the wind against and all bushes and trees down the left hand side catching any errant shots. good practice facilities too

A good test of golf

Played the course Monday afternoon 10th July after a hot/dry spell of weather and was pleasantly surprised to find both the tees and fairways to be in good condition due to the on course irrigation system. The greens were also very good, quite quick and putted true.
There is a good mixture of short and longer par 4's and to score well on these holes you had to be fairly straight. I really liked the four par 3's - all around 150 yards from yellow tees but they were all well bunkered to catch wayward shots - a good test of accuracy.
Unfortunately there wasn't a course map available either on the tees or on the card and lack of course knowledge cost me a high score on the last due to the the back bank of the fairway bunkers being covered in thick rough.

Great course

A very nice course for both beginners and experts alike. Play it safe as a beginner and get a good score, or if more confident, go for broke on some very good risk and reward holes. Would very much like to play this course again.
