What the club says: The golf course measures 6,329 yards and has a par of 70 and a SSS of 71. It generally plays longer than its yardage due to the elevations of several greens and fairways. Although originally a heath land course, there is now an abundance of mature trees and shrubs that line its fairways.
The greens are always true and fast and will test the very best of players. Peter Alliss has described our 17th hole as “one of the best short holes in the South of England”. The course is always in excellent condition throughout the year, and as written in the Michelin Guide “It is well worth a detour”. Martin Hawtree, the renowned international golf course architect, has redesigned Sonning’s original Taylor/Colt layout and has produced an impressive new 18th hole that finishes in front of the clubhouse. With an excellent practice range and short game area, Sonning provides some of the best facilities in the South of England.

In very good nick after strange summer weatherVery warm welcome in pro shop. Course in good condition save for a couple of the bunkers which were compacted after rain where sand thin.

SonningStunning Sonning, beautiful course and fantastic condition. Really enjoyable round, great pace for a four ball, 3:45 mins. Perfect, apart from the sock policy... wear white socks with shorts... still don't get that rule I'm afraid.

Rude and dated - but good courseAttitude to visitors atrocious. Had driven 2 hours to play at the course, only to be greeted by an interrogation on my attire. Upon explaining I'd driven a fair distance and needed to use the changing facilities, I was "generously" told I could pay for my round once I had changed. Upon changing I was promptly upsold a pair of white socks, as clearly the definition of smart dress code, is white ankle socks only. Left a pretty sour taste. Would add the course was in excellent condition, but to be honest this is exactly the type of golf club with dated attitudes that puts people off golf.
Lovely course & very friendlySecond visit to Sonning, course was in great condition and the hospitality before, during and after was worth a mention - especially as my 4-ball voucher expired in October but the club Secretary was very accommodating in assisting in re-arranging. Good mix of holes, good greens and reasonably priced.

Love playing this courseDespite weeks without rain the fairways were a green oasis and the greens fast and tricky as always.
A hot humid day with thunderstorms forecast and with covid restrictions the drinks served on the patio as the rain started were very much deserved. As a visiting society we were very well looked after.

Good CoursePlayed here twice now and both times the course has been great. The greens on the second occasion has just been treated, so a bit bumpy. There are some mighty long par 4's that require a good old thump with the mashie. Quite strong par 3's, it really is a good knock, give it a go.
Good valueTeed off from 12th on pros advice as competition had just started on 1st. Course was in good condition but greens has been treated so slightly bobbly but consistent speed and fairways maybe a tad long. Friendly members and no hold ups so got round quickly. Great value as played using a hot deal so under ?40 each for a very nice course was excellent value. Nice clubhouse and decent drink selection.
WonderfulSuperb all round course, club house and hospitality. The greens were absolutely fantastic.

Great courseAnnual society day at Sonning GC and everything as expected, 1st class. Course in excellent condition and greens fast and tricky.

Very well designed - makes you think!Specific tee times are not bookable, but I’d called a few days earlier and was advised when would be a good time to play. On this Friday morning the course wasn’t busy. An impressive clubhouse & Pro shop where I was given a friendly welcome.... I felt I was in for a good day.
Course is very well laid out with a good mix of longer holes with wide fairways and some short, tighter par-4’s, where accuracy is important. Several holes have cross bunkers so you have to know your club distances. No water in play but straying too far from the fairway will find trouble in trees, longer grass or mounds/hollows that will leave an awkward recovery.
The four par-3 holes are fantastic. All well protected by bunkers so again, club distance is vital, although you’ll probably only need an iron. They’re all short, max 152 yds from yellows.... who really needs a par-3 hole over 200yds? (I hope my home club read this!!)
Sonning is a beautiful golf course, maintained to perfection. I found no negatives.... even the air line had enough pressure to remove all grass from my shoes & trolley! Not local for me, but I will be playing here again.
