Not going back there

Course was in very poor condition and not at all well signposted. Greens were dreadful - like putting on winter greens.

Not going back there

Have played here before and enjoyed it but was shocked by how poor the condition of the course is. Some of the fairways were more like meadow land and the greens were the worst I've played on for a while.

Disappointed

Last visited Shrigley about 18 months ago. Quite shocked to see the state of the course now, clearly very little money being spent on what could be a lovely course. The greens were almost unputtable, holes for the tining still evident , heavily sanded and so hard the ball jumped about with a life of its own. With more dry weather forecast things can only get worse . Fairways were fine on most holes although lots of bare patches around some greens. Paths were in a very parlous state and need lots of attention to make them acceptable. Such a pity because Shrigley has some really good and very playable holes ,after you have left the first 4 moorland top holes which are forgettable. The bonus at Shrigley are the fantastic views across the Cheshire plain.

Scenic gemstone

Beautiful course set in the peak district with superb views in all directions especially over the cheshire plain. Demanding course suitable for all handicappers. Good course management required to combat ball lie on fairways. Alot of ball above and below feet stances required so good practice.

Amazing Course

This is a superb course to play. I played with a friend Jan 6th after a week of rain and the course was in excellent condition. The greens were perfect and looked like most courses do in summer.
The staff from 1st arriving were polite friendly and helpful. Even the cold and bit more rain couldn't ruin the day.
A really great place and golf course. A course would recommend to anyone and know you will not be disappointed.

Extremely hilly course. Previous reviews have been a little harsh complaining about the quality of the greens. Other than one sanded over green (which is now looking great) the rest were fine.

A lot better

I gave the quality of the course a slating in May and wasn't looking forward to coming back for our society event this weekend. But it has improved and I felt that needed saying. There are still a few dodgy and scruffy tee beds but, with the exception of the 14th green which is shocking, the greens are a lot better. They ran true and at a decent pace.
There has been a lot of rain recently and the staff said the course would have been closed if it hadn't been for us and another visiting party being booked in all weekend, but the course really stood up to the rain well. We had a couple of really heavy downpours during play which drained away pretty quickly.
It is still in my opinion a fantastic layout. The quality could still be improved but it looks like it's getting there.
We had breakfast in the clubhouse which they kept open for us after we had played on both days. The hotel was nice. Clean and comfortable. The evening meal was also nice and they managed to partition off a separate area for us which was a nice touch.
I would now say give it a try, especially if you can get a good groupon deal.

More investment needed!

I dont think the people at shrigley hall realise the potential that this place has. I really do think that this course has the potential to become one of the best courses in england certainly cheshire. Ok so firstly the practise facilities are not good enough. I have seen some recent re investment in the flags on the putting green but apart from that nothing else has gone on. The practise nets have to be replaced as there are loads of stones and other material engrained in the mats and the actual net itself have holes inside them. The driving range dosent even have its own balls (you have to bring your own balls) again another sign of lack of investment, and one time i saw the driving range be used as a football pitch! The first four holes are in one section of the course, the condition of the first two are decent at best, however the third tee box is in a poor condition and the hole is way to steep and needs flattening out. Hole 4 is quite tough but again the big ditch in the middle of the fairway, again needs flattening out. The 4th green is too firm and needs to be softened a bit. The 5th in my opinion is one of the toughest driving holes on the course. I do find it border line ridiculous that wherever you aim for on your drive you can almost be guaranteed that your ball slopes down to the left rough. On this instance i dont think the fairway needs flattening as the slope isnt severe i just think the faiway needs softening. I also think on the 5th that if you see on the right of the green there is a severe slope which is a too easy bail out for the players, i think a bunker should be put in place there. The 6th tee box is in a bit of a state and i think the idea of putting two fairways either side of the cart path isnt good. The fairway to the left of the cart path should be grown into rough meaning that fairway should only be the right of the cart path meaning a smaller, tougher target for the players to aim for. The 7th hole for me is the hole where most of the work should be done. The big steep mountain you have to walk up should be hugely flattened as the slope you have to walk up is just insane. The 8th hole should be kept the same as it is the signature hole for a reason, simply brilliant. The 9th i think also should be kept the same, breathtaking as you walk up to the hotel. The tenth tee should be raised up more as there is another to steep walk from tee to fairway. The slope to the left of the green is the similar to 5th (bunker should be put in place). The 10th a think they should use the winter tees at the top of the hill, as the actual tees. It looks narrow from the tee box but it is short, meaning an iron off the tee would mean you would have in and around 130 left in. The 12th again needs flattening as the walk up the hill is stupid. But the views from the 12th green are simply breathtaking. The 13th should be kept the same but the green should be raised up as you can literally fat your shot and it could trickle down the hill and onto the green. Now the walk from the 13th green to the 14th tee is also stupid. In my opinion they should flatten out the land and bring back the tee to where the old 14th green is and make the hole into a par 5. The fairway needs to flattened as it is literally impossible to keep your ball on the fairway without it trickling off the left rough. The 14th green is simply awful, about 50 percent of it is bare and the stupid slope in the middle of it makes augustas greens look flat! The 15th should be made a lot tougher by putting some bunkers in play. The 16th should be kept the same as should the 17th and 18th. Inside the lodge it is lovely however the locker room is dated and needs a bit of modernisation. I regualarly speak to the chef and he said there is a new menu being designed which is good to here as the food that i have been served by him is gorgeous. The brabazon suite in the hotel, the food is a severly overpriced and it cost me £3.75 for a pint of coke...rip off! It has taken a lot and thought and time to write this review and i hope shrigley respect that as i hope it gives them a wake up call to how beautiful this place can be.

2 ball played 09/07/2017

Nice course spoilt by some really bad greens and tee boxes.
Most of the tee boxes were rutted with patchy grass and a lot of sand, it was hard to find a nice level place to tee which had any grass on. The greens are really small and testing, which would have been fine if they had been watered and soft landing. For me greens should land soft and roll quick. Playing a wedge onto these green nearly always led to your ball bouncing 4ft up in the air off the green and over the back into danger as they were rock hard under foot. We had to start aiming way short of the green to allow for the bounce. The 14th green was in a terrible state and really should have been worked on and it better condition by this time of year. I would be fuming if I was a member there.
The fairways were fine and the course itself in general was very beautiful and a tough work and challenging. Its very hilly with some long walks between holes, so pack drinks !
All in all I did enjoy the round and there were a few superb feature holes. Just simply having watered the greens would have made it an even more enjoyable round. I would recommend for the price we paid, but not sure about full price. I am returning in August this year and hope to see some improvement as it should be quick and cheap to fix the few flaws, on what is nearly a fantastic course.

Played this course in winter and it played totally different. With lots of variation on each hole, it's a great place to test all parts of your game, and most of your clubs too. One to add to the list of going back for another round.
