A poor experience
I've played a couple of times now and won't be going back with today's experience being the final straw.
Pros
- The layout is a bit mad, so you'll definitely have 'an experience', as well as the views of the surrounding countryside. The pre-round bacon sandwich was great.
Cons
- It's expensive for what it is, compared to some of the other courses locally it's poor value for money.
- The layout as I mentioned above is either a bit mad or very bland, lots of back and forth golf, lots of blind tee shots, a few good holes but not enough to make the course anything other than a novelty, I can't imagine being a member here.
- Pace of play was rubbish, there was a big group out ahead of us, but there was no marshalling, we were waiting to tee off for 10 mins on every hole and ended up calling it off after a 2h45 front 9, when I went and let the pro shop know (as there were three groups on the tee at one point), I got the brush off.
- The condition was fine, not great, quite boggy in places but not too bad though compared to other courses locally at £25/£30 a round I'd expect better for £40.

Mr
The course has some short Par 4 holes which have blind tee shots. The fairways slope quite severely running into rough. These holes are too short to take a driver.

Not going back there
Course was in very poor condition and not at all well signposted. Greens were dreadful - like putting on winter greens.

Not going back there
Have played here before and enjoyed it but was shocked by how poor the condition of the course is. Some of the fairways were more like meadow land and the greens were the worst I've played on for a while.

Disappointed
Last visited Shrigley about 18 months ago. Quite shocked to see the state of the course now, clearly very little money being spent on what could be a lovely course. The greens were almost unputtable, holes for the tining still evident , heavily sanded and so hard the ball jumped about with a life of its own. With more dry weather forecast things can only get worse . Fairways were fine on most holes although lots of bare patches around some greens. Paths were in a very parlous state and need lots of attention to make them acceptable. Such a pity because Shrigley has some really good and very playable holes ,after you have left the first 4 moorland top holes which are forgettable. The bonus at Shrigley are the fantastic views across the Cheshire plain.

The bacon butty, coffee and welcome on arrival were all good. Then it went downhill from there. The greens are absolutely awful. There was a notice up to say they had been fed and sanded which I know needs doing and would have been acceptable if there hadn't been numerous dinges and delves in them. This allowed pockets of sand to sit in those hollows, leading to very bobbly and bouncy greens. We all had at least 2 putts jump off line that were going in and judging the pace was impossible as you didn't know how your ball was going to react to each dinge. Very disappointing. There were also a couple of tee beds that were worse for wear. The fairways were good and the bunker I went in was well sanded. It was a 5 hour round which I know isn't the clubs fault (although there weren't any marshalls to be seen), and then to top it off the golf clubhouse was closed when we got back in @ 6, so we couldn't even have a pint. It's really disappointing as the course is an excellent layout with some really interesting holes. Although they have done away with the uphill par 3 14th, the 14th is now the old 15th, the 15th is the old long par 3 16th but lengthened to a short par 4, the 16th is the old 17th(thank goodness that hole hasn't been changed), the 17th is now a par 4 following the line of the old 18th with a new green put in and the 18th is a nice risky par 3 over water to the old 18th green. We did only pay £16 on a groupon deal, but if you're thinking of paying more than that DON'T!!

2nd time round this lovely course in 12 months. Again let down by poor course investment. Dead grass throughout the course, the greens are diseased and thread bare. Cut inconsistently leaving you frustrated at putts that bounce around the green on an impossibly unpredictable path. Picturesque course and with a bit of time and care could be an absolute gem. \'The Lodge\' is just the club house of old with a decking area.... No food served on a Friday afternoon and we were asked to leave at 4pm after trying to have a few beers after our round and watch a bit of The Masters. Managed 2 hastily drunk pints before being ushered out. Overall disappointing. We will not be returning as we gave it a fair 2nd chance. Practice area summed up the course. Practice green was Pott marked and diseased and the practice nets were in a state of disrepair.

It's a shame that Shrigley has declined into the state it is. If some money was ploughed into this course and with good management, this really could be one of the best courses certainly in Cheshire. However the lack of maintenance and expenditure on silly things like signage when the glaringly obvious things are not been addressed is disappointing. The topology of the land combined with amazing views and diverse nature to be seen all make Shrigley something very special. Sadly until someone buys the hotel with a vision for what the course could be, then sadly i doubt it'll ever return to its former glory. A decision was made some years ago to build a pitch n putt course over by the 18th green. What a joke! I wonder if anyone has played it looking at its awful condition? It just serves as a further money drain to maintain when the focus should be on the main course. The greens have been cored more than I've ever seen Greens cored in such a short time. It wouldn't be so bad if they did a good job of it! So it's like putting across lego. They then load it with stoney sand but barely bother to sweep it in, so your left with a holey-sandy bobbly surface on which I promise will annoy you as you watch your ball roll towards the hole, only at the last moment to veer away due to it striking a stone, lump of sand/mud or an oversized core hole. Such a shame because as I say this place could be amazing.

Invited as a guest to a society outing on 14th August 2012. First time I have played Shrigley and I can safely say the last. Whilst the course is pretty to look at I found it utterly unenjoyable to play. The first four holes were nondescript, parked in an open field and totally detached from the remaining 14 holes. Lots and lots of blind shots which for a first timer was a nightmare. The greens were a disgrace - cored and excessively sanded in every case, patchy in length and therefore completey inconsistent to the point of being unplayable. The fairways were cut long on many holes to combat the ridiculous cambers, resulting in little run on good shots and punitive rough if straying off line at all. Many of the tee boxes were unkempt and uneven, with yellow tees actually in front of the reds. The final straw for me was on the 15th hole where we found a temp tee waiting for us - in AUGUST!!!. For a large golf society paying £27 per person I found this wholly unacceptable. Off the course was no better. Although the clubhouse was a nice, modern building, the shower room had no soap, cold water out of the showers and malfunctioning lights. Staff were surly, seemed bereft of friendliness and were clearly delighted to see out the door at 9.30pm. For a corporate hotel to maintain a golf course so poorly, to offer such poor facilities and unfriendly service in exchange for nearly £50 per person can only be described as daylight robbery. I felt genuinely sorry for the society organisers who had to take a lot of (quite justifiable) flak from the society members.

Everything about the day was brilliant , but once again golf etiquette has gone right out the window! The pace of play was excruciating and slow players just will not let you through! I would not recommend anyone to play here!

Course a bit of a mess, sand everywhere on greens, bit of grass in bunkers. Molehills, dead yew trees everywhere despite the hard work of green keepers. Pity as the walk and views are brilliant, deer and herons on the course
