Give the Prince Bishops a miss until 2023

We visited Ramside in September 2021 and the Prince Bishops was in shocking condition, we complained and got a free return in Feb 2022. We have just returned and all 8 of us agreed we will not return to Ramside until 2023 at least. They have done nothing to the courses since installing drainage in 2021 and yet still look to charge the same money for the awful state they are in. Holes are shortened and the tees are sludgy messes. The 18th was shortened because of them building cabins, they are now finished so why not open the hole up or is the intention to leave it as a short par four SI5 ? The staff are great, really polite and understanding but it doesnt mean its worth paying good golf money for a course thats about ?15 standard. We played Sharpley the next day and it was superb for ?25. Ramside facilities and hotel are great, the Prince Bishops Course avoid and play the Cathedral as thats in better nick. Or better still go to Slaley, Rockliffe, Carden Park or Arden and get better value golf.

Poor, cathedral course

Don't both, poor nick, greens hard to read, slow fast turn or not.
Get a sherpa or a buggy, you'll be mountain climbing.
Some hols are in different post codes to the other so Sat nav recommended.
We thought it was odd that the course was empty, until we'd played about half the course. play the other course prince bishop, thats much better

This is the third time we have booked and played ramside and the third time they have been unable to verify our booking. We booked through 'direct tee time' and before you even step up to the desk you know they aren't gonna know you have booked. We were booked for 1030 and had to move it to 1130 as they had booked people over us even though it was available online. Service is by far the worst around. So we played the cathedral on previous occasions and was impressed although a new course it has a great layout and apart from in some areas is in great condition. This time around we played prince bishops and we were not impressed at all. We have played probably 5 or 6 courses locally not one of them had that much sand all over the tees and greens (it's April next week not December) It really was in woeful condition and for £20 was literally at least a fiver more expensive than anywhere else. Massively dissapointing can't help but compare this to the other top courses we have played round here (rockcliffe, brancepeth and Cleveland) and it's a shame to say this course is miles away from that standard.

this course must be played in a buggy. the course is too long and too hilly it makes for a real disappointing round of golf.they had a refreshment car at the end of the 11th, it should have been an oxygen tent. buggy buggy buggy

Decent club house but on the whole it's trying to be something it's never going to be. The course is dreadful. So many dog legs, most of which are right to left and bend after 150 yards so the best shot off the tee is a big slice - how can that be right. "Mickey Mouse" sums it up the best. If you want to pay over the odds for a course that rewards poor shots and where you can lose a ball from a perfect drive then look no further.

JTG England Final Venue

I got in-depth first hand knowledge of the Cathedral course when following my Junior team in the National Final three weeks ago. It’s a long course off the whites at 6,800 yards, let alone the blues at over 7,000. Add to this the lack of run on the ball and it’s a monster.
Positives are a good range of well designed holes making good use of the surprisingly undulating terrain. This includes some tough par three holes.
Negatives were a certain lack of definition to the course. Fairways merged into rough with at times no clarity. There are numerous water hazards, but for the quality golfer these frequently did not come into play. For instance the 18th is a par 3 with a large lake. Over 200 yards but the lake finishes 25 yards short of the green. This is a recurring feature around the course. With a few tweaks the course could become a top venue.
The greens were noticeably bumpy and not particularly quick for our practice round. When cut for the final they were faster but still bumpy, making putting a bit of a lottery.
Watch out for the 17th. There is a sign on the tee that says you are not allowed to use anything other than irons because of health and safety. This on a hole measuring well over 400 yards from the whites, into the prevailing wind. Nonsense!

Ramside course review

A once good hotel course is now in an awful condition. Bunkers full of weeds and soggy slow greens are a few of the problems you will encounter.

Played this course in poor weather early April 2015. Course information describes something it isn't, long walks between clubhouse and first tee, even longer between second green and third tee. Fairways were poor, little grass growing and many weeds. All in all, the course has opened too early, with the aim of generating some income, nay be a decent course in 10 years.

In good nick but not terribly enjoyable

there's a few nice holes on this course and they've done the best they can with the land available I guess. I haven't played the other course but I've heard good things about it. Will hope to play that shortly.
